  1. Hello: According to the Opera web site ( http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/386/ ), the systems requirements for the current version of Opera (v10.10) is Windows 2000 minimum and at least Windows XP recommended. So while Opera may function on Win 98/ME, it's not officially supported. The recommendation of Opera is to use an older version of Opera (such as v9.64) for older systems. Cheers, Jerry
  2. Hello: As I understand it, Norton Antivirus 2002 is no longer supported with new definition updates. It appears that Norton AV 2003 is the earliest version that is still receiving updates, and it seems that it doesn't support Windows 98/ME. (See: http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/definitions/download/detail.jsp?gid=n95 .) Cheers, Jerry
  3. Hello: Thanks for posting the link properly as http://www.avast.com/eng/system-requirements-avast-home.html . That's how I originally posted it on TechGuy's forum, but their forum shortened the display (although it did work correctly if clicked on over there.) Cheers

  5. Hello: I asked on the AntiVir anti-virus forum, and they stated that they no longer support Win 98/ME. I think that they dropped support in mid-2007. AVG has released a new v8.0 of it's commercial anti-virus and it no longer supports Win 98/ME. The AVG Free Edition v7.5 is still available, and if AVG follows their past pattern, a Free Edition of v8.0 will follow in a few to several months. AVG has explicitly stated that: "* Some older operating systems such as Microsoft Windows ME, Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 98 will only be supported until August 2008 as a minimum." See: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-...s/frt/0#details . Avast! has just released v4.8 of their anti-virus, including the free home edition. v4.8 still supports "more Windows versions (from Windows 95 to Vista 64 Bit) than any other anti-malware product." See: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html . In their forum, they stated that the new v5.0 that is under development will continue to support Win 98/ME, although not all features will be supported on Win 98/ME (but that is the case, currently). So it looks like Avast! Home will be the only remaining full-featured freeware anti-virus package to support Win 98/ME. Fortunately, it has gotten some very favorable reviews. CNet Download.com rated the new Avast! Home v4.8 as 5 out of 5 stars. See: http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition....html?tag=lst-1 . And PC Mag has an on-line review of the new v4.8 of Avast! Home edition, rating it as 4 out of 5 stars - or "very good." See: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2282699,00.asp . For a commercial product, BitDefender new v2008 requires Win2K, XP, or Vista. But they are still offering their previous version, v10, which supports Win 98/ME. See: http://www.bitdefender.com/site/view/Produ...in98-Me-NT.html . And the BitDefender Free Edition is still available and supports Win 98/ME, but it lacks an on-access, real-time scanner and is an on-demand scanner product only. Finally, I wanted to mention that the Outpost Firewall Free edition supports Win 98/ME. See: http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php . Cheers, O.J.
  6. Hello Again: I also meant to mention a freeware utility called "ScanDefrag" available for free download at: http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/ . This utility will use the MS Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, and Defragmenter utilities that come bundles with Win 98/ME. But what is does is have you reboot the system and then it run these utilities before the system fully boots into normal Windows mode. This eliminates all of the stopping and re-starting that occurs when MS Scandisk and Defragmenter are run in Windows normal mode, and I found that it even works better than running these utilities in Windows safe mode. HTH, O.J.
  7. Hello: Diskeeper Lite 7.0 was the last freeware version to support Win 98/ME and is available for download at: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207 . The only problems are that it's nag-ware, with a nag screen at start-up to buy the full version, and that it will replace the MS Defragmenter as the default defragmenter utility in the registry. But it does seem to work quite well. HTH, O.J.
