  1. I have a fresh install needing updates on a older Dell laptop(win7 64bit), but I get the "endless checking for updates bug" or error. I recall seeing a fix posted somewhere and it involved slowly updating the win32sys files W five patches. I think even ask woody posted on this issue on his site(but it's for win 7 up me thinks) Best regards
  2. Thanks for your reply, I had an idea of what I needed to do but I guess I wanted to try to get another opinion. Yes I will just leave the post open. Matt
  3. 11-20-09 Update to post : I have since reinstalled this system to overcome the problem of a corrupt Registry. All is well on this date of 11-20-09
  4. Hi I am a new member my user name is matt8911insocal real name is Matt. I am having a problem with my Win XP's registry and I am wondering where to go from here. Yes I did read your sticky and I did search for answers. Did I change anything? Yes made BIOS changes on the RAM trying to make it stable due to the occasional Beep that I get upon startup. I have also noticed a few discrepancies in the BIOS settings which you can read about on tweaktown forums, see links below. Did I forget to mention the beep upon starup Sorry I'll edit it in. No malware present, No Nlite used, providing all infor required, posting legibly and following rules. This is a fairly new build (See Device infor below) and I just installed XP home last weekend. I followed the advice from the Tweakguides.com Tweaking companion found here http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html I installed from the original XP OEM disc with the F6 driver for AHCI hard drive mode. Here is a little rundown of what occured during the last 48 hours. Saturday Morning First off I have an occasional Beep upon startup (memory problem maybe)not the regular beep a longer beep. The Award BIOS guide that I checked says its most likely a memory problem (beep). So I set the memory to manual timings but still same problem. Reset BIOS to load optimal defaults and entered only neccessary settings. I changed PCI express drive to 900 mv like all the other gigabyte boards (advanced clock control section of BIOS) see the link below to tweaktown forum. testing continues.(updated 9-07-09) I started to do the weekly scans and maintenance on the PC which includes 1. Scanning for malware and virus's using trendmicro and Asquared trojan scanner(clean). 2. Checking for new startup programs and services in msconfig (no alterations were made). I installed bootvis and ran a scan, but made no changes. 3. Cleaned the PC with disk cleanup and CCleaner. 4. Cleaned the registry with Ccleaner that checked for problems with applications, obsolete software and MUI cache there were like three entries deleted in total. 5. I ran the check for errors on drive C: and set it to fix automatically (chkdsk/f ). It came up with 494 unused index entries and cleaned them all. CHKDSK discovered free space markes as allocated in the master file table bitmap. Windows made corrections to the file system. 6. Defragmented the drives. I needed to turn off power for some electrical repairs. I removed and replaced the power cord for the PC while running, accidentally. The PC was not doing anything at the time, I believe. Another possible cause of the problem? Saturday afternoon I installed a driver for my Compaq 5017 LCD monitor(version?) This may be the problem as the driver was originally for my compaq presario box S4210NX I installed 3DMark 06 and all the required crap C++ and Direct x SDK crap I ran 3Dmark06 no problem I checked my posts on tweaktown forum and googled for memory upgrade/replacement see below for links. Another possible cause of the problem, attempted virus infection or hacker from the internet? XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Major malfuntion occurred here XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX My LCD monitor shutdown and would not restart, so I moved PC to other HP monitor. When I started up I got a error that my registry was corrupt and windows reverted to a previous version. I got the event viewer messages and they start like so.........windows was unable to load the registry. this is often caused by insuffcient memory or insuffcient security rights. Detail - the configuration registry database is corrupt for C:\Docs and settings\local service\local settings\App data\MS\Win\\UsrClass.dat the it says windows cannot log you on becase your profile cannot be loaded(configuration registry database is corrupt. Whew thats got to be the longest post I ever wrote( a frigging book methinks). Anyone got any ideas or should I just reinstall? Thanks all ##################################### UPDATE TO POST######################### ##################################### Hi again I do not want to add another post as that may bump me back from getting help ( you probably look at oldest posts first right.?) Here is what I did recently to attempt to solve the registry errors I realized I had taken Registry saves using ERUNT or emergency recovery utility NT. So I looked at where the trouble began and used the restore option in ERUNT. Seems like its worked, as the errors are not reappearing in the event viewer. I looked at system restore and all my restore points were gone so I could not use that. Isnt that strange that restores would just disappear?? Well I am preparing a custom install disk (w /F6 drivers and SP3) just in case my system does go down. I am also backing up all my work as well. To be safe I am creating a spare backup and willing to consider an online backup solution. Also exploring drive imaging software to save me some headaches down the road. 9-07-09 The beeps on startup are gone now after I adjusted the BIOS. Changing the PCI express drive setting to 900 (see above). 9-08-09 Still having some problems with Internet Explorer hanging and freeing some other programs are hanging too. MS Messenger hangs when I try to open it. Maybe this one is defective and there is a newer updated version so I leave it alone. 9-09-09 System just recovered from a serious error after I powered on for the evening. and automatically rebooted itself. Here is what it says in help and support Source: system error Version: 5.2 Symbolic Name: ER_KRNLCRASH_LOG Thanks for listening Bye.
