Where do the updates save on your hard drive from Windows Update?
RichTJ99 replied to RichTJ99's topic in Windows XP
Thanks, that is a great thing to know. Why would anyone uninstall an update (this might be a dumb question). -
Hi, I used the Nlite software to setup an unattended installation. I selected the option for the system to not actually connect to the network drive on each boot. That is messing up my backup software for some reason. How can I reenable the OS to connect to the network drive on each boot again? Thanks, Rich

Hi, I am currently an IE 6 user. I keep trying IE 7 & find its much slower. I also am an Outlook 2003 user. I like it, its fast enough, works well with exchange, etc. I played with Outlook 2007 using Vista on my laptop (pentium M 2ghz, 1 gig ram, etc). The whole setup was extremely slow. I ended up reinstalling XP/Outlook 2003 & all is speedy again. Am I missing some great feature of Outlook 2007? Will it be faster/worth installing again? I have an exchange account which gives a free copy of outlook 2007, so there is no cost to the upgrade (aside from the yearly exchange account). Thanks, Rich

[Question] Any difference between a XP Pro SP2 CD & XP SP1 CD?
RichTJ99 replied to RichTJ99's topic in Windows XP
So, if I take a XP Pro cd & the first thing I do is apply SP2, is that any different than a SP2 CD install from a functionality & security standpoint? I think I am not being clear. Meaning, is there a difference (aside from the uninstall feature) between a PC with Win XP Pro SP1 & then installing SP2 vs a PC with Win XP Pro SP2 installed? If both PC's have all the latest hotfixes too. -
[Question] Any difference between a XP Pro SP2 CD & XP SP1 CD?
RichTJ99 posted a topic in Windows XP
Hi, I was curious, is there any difference at all between a CD that has XP Pro SP2 on it vs XP Pro SP1 & XP Pro (no service pack at all), once they have all been updated using the windows update website? My question is about the desktop of the PC using the software, is there any difference between the final updated product (after using windowsupdate.com)? Is a XP SP2 with all the updates more streamlined then going from XP to XP SP1 to XP SP2 + all updates? THanks, Rich Title edited -- Please, use [TAGS] in your topic's title. --Sonic -
Hi, I was curious, does it make any difference if I install SP1 on a PC & then immediately upgrade to SP2? Is there any speed detriments to doing that vs starting out with a CD that has a slipstreamed SP2 in it? Basically I was wondering if there are any bad effects from starting with SP1, then upgrading to SP2 vs installing a PC with SP2 installed from the start (off the CD)? Thanks, RIch Title Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on. --Zxian

Hi, I want to leave remote desktop enabled on a server in my home so I can access it from the outside. Is there anything I can do to make it more secure? Is PCanywhere just as "easy" to access? I would like to use RC because any PC can use it (with xp pro anyway) (plus my pda can get to it as well)? Any suggestions? Thanks, Rich

Microsoft Media Edition 2005 Question
RichTJ99 replied to RichTJ99's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
Ok, so theres no way to just add MCE onto a XP Pro box? Like installing MS office or something like that. -
Hi, I was playing with a Dell with the media edition software on it last night. I like the way you can use the center with one button & then disable it to use windows regularly. Can you install this on a WinXP Pro machine & still keep the system as a WinXP Pro machine (or does it then become a media edition machine?). Is the media edition a whole OS or just an addon to the existing OS? Thanks, Rich

Hi, I have a few hard drives in my system (4). When I open "My Computer" & choose my "E" drive (which has some MP3's in a sub folder), I do not have the "Music Task" section. The drive runs just fine. When I choose my "D" drive, the PC hangs & the only difference is that it does have that "Music Task" section. I would like to either disable the Music Task or turn it off for that particular window. Any ideas on how to disable that feature (it slows my "D" drive down quite a bit)? If I view the drive through Windows Explorer (which doesnt have those helpful menus) it is speedy as can be. Thanks, Rich

VMware 5.0 - What services did it create?
RichTJ99 posted a topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Hi, I am a VMware 4.xx user & at one point I was able to see what services VMware 4.xx added & I set them from automatic to manual (so the program would start the services when the application was launched). I was curious what services Vmware 5.xx adds to a windows machine so that I can keep my PC performance up. I do not use VMware all that often (once a week) so the constant loading of VMware 5.xx services is not what I need for my system. Currently when I first start VMware 4.xx it takes a while for the program to load, the second time (before a reboot) it is speedy. I realize this is from the manual services that had to start the first time. Anyway, what services should be set to manual in Vmware 5.xx? Thanks, Rich -
Hi, Right now I have a 19 inch Envision flat screen monitor (on the left), a 22 inch Mitsubishi CRT monitor (middle), & a 19 inch Dell 1905 Flat screen monitor (on the right). At the moment, the 19" on the left & the CRT in the center is connected to a ATI 9800 Pro via two Super VGA cables (one cable has a DVI adapter). I now have a third monitor on the right & I am planning on getting a PCI video card (I have an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe Mobo right now). I have a ton of spare AGP cards but no PCI cards that are under 5 years old sitting around. If I want to add another Monitor (which is sitting here ready to go) to my PC so I have a ton of extra desktop space (neither flat screen is used for gaming), should I get another ATI card so they play nicely, or would a PCI Nvidia card be a better solution? Any suggestions for an inexpensive card that will be only used for desktop / business applications? Web Browser in monitor 1, Spread Sheet in monitor 2, Email in monitor 3. That sorta thing. Thanks, Rich

Hi, I am looking to move my MS Outlook 2003 from my Desktop to my Laptop. I know where the PST file is for my "personal folders". I also know how to export my Calendar thanks to this forum. My email rules & junk mail settings, I am not sure where to import or export those settings. Any ideas on how to move MS Outlook 2003, all settings & that sorta thing, from one PC to another? Both PC's are on a network together & have file sharing enabled. Thanks, Rich

How to ensure old Outlook2003 Calendar Items Stay?
RichTJ99 replied to RichTJ99's topic in Microsoft Office
So since my autoarchive is on, all my old appointments will never get deleted right? -
In case anyone ever needs it, believe it or not, you control the margins for outlook express by editing the margins in internet explorer. I thought that was pretty stupid since I thought they were two separate programs but oh well. If you want to play with your OE margins, do it in IE.

Hi, I am looking to move my PC's into another room. The KVM switch I have for my current solution is perfect but the cables I am using (25 footers) wont work to the new place I am moving to. A 30 foot would be perfect but the place I buy my cables from (www.cablesonline.com) only sells PS2 cables that are 25 feet. The monitor cables can be 50 feet, but the PS2 on 25 feet. What the heck is the point of that? If I want to park the monitor 25 feet away from the keyboard? I was told that you cant go any further with the PS2 cable. Is that the case or just marketing? Thanks, Rich

How to ensure old Outlook2003 Calendar Items Stay?
RichTJ99 replied to RichTJ99's topic in Microsoft Office
anyone? -
Hi, I am running XP Pro & Office 2003 Pro. I have some older calendar items in my outlook. They seem to date back to February of 2004. I want to make sure that all those items stay put in my calendar. I know if I do a windows reinstall, I need to export all my calendar items & import them into the reinstalled program. My question is how do I make sure that Outlook keeps all my old appointments. I would like to be able to track the next 10 or so years of my appointments for my business. I want to make sure there is no setting in Outlook 2003 that would get rid of old appointments. Thanks, Rich
