About I41Mar

  1. Sorry about the long delay for an useful update (my laziness!). I want to share some observations after almost three years of further PC use, a PC laptop built in the 2006 year with OS WinXP SP2. The short story is this: 3 years ago I had to stay for work far from home for a few days and I thought I wanted to carry my PC to be used during the free time; but I had fear of damaging it during a long train journey (6 hours) when using it on the train trip (vibrations, oscillations and bumps). My great fear of making some PC damage has prevailed, and as precautionary measure in the end I had not used it during the outward journey and during the return journey done after a few days; during the days that I have spent far from home I used my PC only when I had some free time, positioned stably on a table in the hotel room in the evenings. During those days, a few times I noticed a 'clicking' noise emitted by the PC (never happened before!). When after a few days I returned home I reviewed the S.M.A.R.T. HD data and I noticed that the 'Reallocation Event Count' parameter has increased from 1 to 2. After further days of PC use at home the 'clicking' noise has happened more repeatedly and the HD S.M.A.R.T. data showed the increase of 'Reallocation Event Count' parameter from 2 to 3. Meanwhile the 'Current Pending Sector Count' and the 'Offline Uncorrectable Sector Count' HD S.M.A.R.T. parameters have been always zero. I thought then that the HD (60 GB PATA Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 HD, according to Everest report) was about to fail and I quickly bought a new 80 GB PATA HD as a replacement part (but not replaced yet!). After the last 'Reallocation Event Count' increase to 3, the 'clicking' noise disappeared and I continued to use my PC until now (after about 3 years!), to my great surprise without any problem! For clarity my precautionary measures at home are these: the PC is put in a cabinet drawer at home; before turning on the PC I put it stably on a table and then I turn it on, and when it is off I wait for 10-20 seconds before taking it and put it back in the cabinet drawer. I have a believing that HD actually was only partially damaged during the trip (by vibrations, oscillations and bumps), even though the PC was turned off. Best regards to all MSFN friends and thank you for your kind answers. I41Mar
  2. Perhaps it can be useful with regard to the sound issue: in the discussion http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/157438-win98-via-ac97/ maximus-decim at post#7 said ''Last version Realtek WDM driver worked with Windows 98SE - 4.04 On a site of Realtek the file version is stored - 4.06 - this driver with windows 98se does NOT work!'' 3. Dear friends please, I would like to know, if you can help, where can I download the software packages that contain these codecs. Thank you and Happy Easter. I41Mar
  4. My PC are: - desktop PC PIII 700MHz 512 MB RAM (year 2000, now less used) with Win98SE for gaming, dos programs and 16-bit programs use, not internet connected - laptop PC Pentium M 1.6GHz 512 MB RAM (2006 year, now used daily) with WinXPSP2 for office use, cd-dvd, play video clips, general image editing, not internet connected (not updated in order to avoid incompatibility with some 16-bit programs and some dos games and programs) - netbook 1.6GHz 1GB RAM (2010 year, used for internet browsing) with Win7 connected by a mobile internet key. In my early years of computing experience (2000-2007), I had two chances of being infected by a autorun virus coming from a usb key on Win98SE PC that behaved like an antivirus itself, because the virus was looking for some WinXP services and then it was easly removed. In more recent years (last 6 years), increasing my user experience (but I'm not really an expert), I have not had any virus infection by any media, using some common sense (safe site surfing, preferably installing portable software downloaded from trusted sites, scanning everything; only after I decide to transfer the downloaded files to the other older PCs. If I need to transfer some my files to an untrusted PC using my usb key, I will write protect it before the transfer operation). For the next few years I plan to buy a used laptop with Win 7 with at least 4Gb RAM and to run Win98SE and WinXPSP2 in virtual environment only, hoping to benefit from the great electric power consumption improvements of the latest laptop PC and avoiding the old PC maintenance costs for the aging components. In this regard, I am really impressed by the last generation notebook (i5-i7), that usually consumes only 10-25 Watts of electrical power against the 150-250 Watts of a desktop PC (moderate use, not in idle state, and EXCLUDING the monitor electrical power consumption). I have already improved the old notebook PC Pentium M WinXP power consumption and CPU cooling using the RMClock utility. Regards. I41Mar
  5. As a viable alternative to Process Explorer there is Nirsoft CurrProcess v1.13, a freeware Process Viewer downloadable at www.nirsoft.net/utils/cprocess.html A newer version of WordTabs V3.30 is downloadable at https://web.archive.org/web/20060517135635/http://omega5.port5.com/files/2004/wordtabs/wt330.zip and some WordTabs V3.30 additional info are at www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/wordtabs-v-3-30-location-t1969791.html I41Mar
  6. Sometimes I need to perform measurements on digital images (distances, angles, bending radius, mouse trip). Here I want to share with you some small freeware tools, very useful in my opinion, for simple geometric measurements without having to install huge design programs, and a color capture program. 7. to jaclaz: because with AXE you can view a file in a graphical manner setting the column width, and seeing the file like a bitmap field, and then you can graphically discern different file areas of your interest (for example like editing graphical resources in dos games). Hello to all from Italy. Ciao. I41Mar
  8. A small contribution: I just tried the $ AXE hex editor software (shareware, now abandoned, the website says it is for OS Win 95 to XP) I found that AXE version 3.3 runs well in my system (Win98SE with USP V2.1 and wihtout KernelEX), but AXE version 3.4 crashes; AXE version 3.4 runs well in WinXPSP2. Could you confirm this (the AXE V3.4 crashes in Win98SE)? Some info: www.brothersoft.com/advanced-hex-editor-15771.html and https://web.archive.org/web/20040604010854/http://jbrowse.com/products/axe/index.shtml AXE V3.4 installer (https://web.archive.org/web/20040204123303/http://www.jbrowse.com/downloads/installAXE.exe) AXE V3.3 installer (https://web.archive.org/web/20031009005722/http://www.jbrowse.com/downloads/installAXE.exe) Kind regards. 9. Maybe it can be interesting about adware coming through chrome extensions at: arstechnica.com/security/2014/01/malware-vendors-buy-chrome-extensions-to-send-adware-filled-updates Kind regards. I41Mar
  10. Thank you for all these informations. As my system is Windows XP SP2 512 MB RAM (no internet use), kindly let me know however, if you can, the updated complete list of the files that handle USB functions for Windows XP, or alternatively the files that are updated from SP2 to SP3 (and where it is possible to download them individually - in order to be able to update only the part USB management). Thank you in advance. I41Mar PS: I dont update my SP2 system to SP3 as I dont have enough RAM (512 MB only) and I also found an incompatibility (seen on another PC with Win XP SP3 and fully updated) of a program that runs in the msdos ntvdm (a dos game editor for a dos game). This game editor run just fine on my SP2 system and also on Windows 98 SE.
  11. @ PROBLEMCHYLD I would like to install only the MPC, and only after the additional codecs. Could you indicate how to obtain the individual codecs that you specified? Thank you. I41Mar P.S. In the past I have used the KLite V3.4.5 pack with MPC, but I want to rebuild the OS system with a better software.
  12. @ CharlotteTheHarlot I think this is a possible download link for the 5° file in your list (contained inside the zipped exe file): http://xoomer.virgilio.it/gloriosus/software/programs/regcompact1.0.zip I41Mar
  13. PROBLEMCHYLD I am very sorry for what I'm reading in the last couple days. Now always less and less people are able to bring updates and news to Win98 OS. Personally I really appreciate your tenacity and willingness to continue this project that I find very useful for anyone having a older PC with Win98 OS, like me. I think we need the development of a SP Final Version (like a milestone). I do not exclude that any other development could also happens in the future. I would like to thank PROBLEMCHYLD for all his work carried out for free and all dedication that he put into it (I imagine many hours and days, and many problems he had to fix). My message is: please, keep your great work! Best regards to all, especially to PROBLEMCHYLD. I41Mar P.S. The Win98 OS updates and news are the main reason why I read this beautiful forum very often.
  14. @ Sceleron Thank you for providing the list of Office 2000 SP3 Post Updates! Just my 2 little observations: - Update 01. KB818798 (Office update): updates the MSO9.dll file to Version 9.0.0.7616 (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818798/en-us). I think that (basing only on files) it is surpassed by 'Security Update for Microsoft Office 2000 (KB947361) that updates the Mso9.dll file to Version 9.0.0.8968 05-Feb-2008 (see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms08-016). - Update 04. KB920822 (Office update): updates the Vbe6.dll file to Version 6.4.99.72 05-Jul-2006 (see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms06-047). I think that it is surpassed by 'Security Update for Office 2000 (KB944425), which updates the Vbe6.dll file to Version 6.5.10.24 10-May-2007 as stated by MS! (see also http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms08-013 on KB944425 , and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms06-047 on KB920822). By by. I41Mar
  15. To tomasz86, (if the message was for me!) about the msi package. Unfortunately I have no Win 2000 PC, neither USB 3 HW. My post purpose was just to bring my little humble contribution, finding the file in question on the net in order to help (the easy part of work). I know that you are very talented, but I'm sorry if I created other type of expectations: my PC knowledge is very limited and I dont have any programming skills! Currently I have a Win98 PC and a laptop with WinXP SP2. P.S.: I admire your really great work, passion, efforts and dedication to Win2k (and also all the other Win2k/Win98 very talented members), bringing such GREAT achievements to Win2k community, and I hope that can cause also a later further development to Win98! In fact I tend to follow every news about the Win2k and Win98. Best wishes. I41Mar
