  1. Hi All, I'm having a problem with Task Scheduler on XP Media Center Edition, which i've narrowed down to a probable specific issue with something called the "event Log Service". Under Computer Management - Services - The Event Log is set to Automatic, but is not running. I try to start it, it gives the following error: "Could not start the Event Log Service on Local Computer. Error 126: The specified module cannot be found". A similar error occurs with something called "Task Scheduler" in the same place - except this time the second part is "Error 1717: The interface is unknown". I think my issue is related to this forum post, http://minasi.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12305. I looked at my Symantec Endpoint Protection quarantined files, which showed a virus called "Trojan.Dropper" had deleted a file named "eventlog.dll". As soon as I restore the file, though, it cleans it by deleting it again. Does anyone have any idea how to replace this .dll file with a clean one? Is it simply by copying a clean file, pasting in the /System32 directory, and registering it?
  2. I recently found the problem with a new computer I built, which was the original motherboard (VIA P4M900-M4) BIOS. Everything continued crashing, including the OS (both Linux and Windows). So, today I upgraded the BIOS and it now runs like a charm. The remaining issue at hand...is that before upgrading the BIOS I tried many other solutions, including running the repair option from the Windows XP MCE 2005 disk. So, now the computer is downgraded to Win XP MCE 2002 (instead of 2005), though Media Center has no obvious problems as yet. But, when trying to install updates for Media Center, particularly the Media Center Extender, is states that I must have version 2005 to install the Extender. Is there any way around this, without reinstalling Windows? OK, I just looked at the Windows Update site tool, which displays that I need to, again, install all updates for Win XP MCE 2005. Oddly, the updates still appear in my Add/Remove Programs list though. Tried to run updates...get an error (I guess they are still installed but not recognized). The problem here is that I still cannot install Media Center Extender.
  3. I just bought and installed Windows XP MCE 2005, which came with the Rollup 2 disk. Everything is up to date, except for Service Pack 3. Before updating it I would like to get honest opinions whether it is worth updating or if it is buggy. Please help.
  4. I could not view the link, but yes disk 1 and 2 have what appears to be a hologram on the entire face of each. Thanks for the help. I figured the OPK had to be optional. I just tried booting from the disk 1. It displayed that it will inspect the hardware configuration and then displayed nothing else. I left it for about 30 minutes and it still did nothing else (just a blank screen, and the HDD LED remained on constantly but I could not hear it rotating). The problem was that I had to reformat the HDD, because the entire drive was partitioned for Linux. Windows MCE is loaded and working fine now. - Thanks
  5. Sorry, I am not sure exactly what an "unattended" install is, but I am simply wondering if I can install the OEM installation on my own home computer without the need for the OPK. What is throwing me off is the term "OEM Preinstallation Kit". This sounds as though the OPK must be installed prior to the Windows MCE. Thanks.
  6. I didn't want to hijack an older forum, http://www.msfn.org/board/opk-tools-t104835.html, so am posting here (where it seems to be relevent). I just bought a Windows MCE OEM Buld 2 disk install. It is a legal copy, and contains the COA. The package states that the OPK (OEM Preinstallation Kit) must be installed. Is this really necessary? Could I possibly do a regular install from the disks without the OPK? The disk package contains MCE disk 1 and 2, as well as an updates for version 2005 disk.
