  1. @ prathapml I just finished reading this thread to this point and i must commend you on your work as well keeping your sanity. I've seen some good suggestions adn moddifications needed to teh reg file as well some people who just can't understand the whoel concept of reading the warnings before useing these tweaks. *sigh*. Personally I think you've done a great job here. @whoever has problems with the classic start menu fist you have to start the themes service second you have to enable the standard menu ie if the tweaks say to ebable classic menu you have to do the opposite thrid and this is the kicker you have to delete the following [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoInstrumentation"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoInstrumentation"=dword:00000001 then it shoudl fix right up. As I have said I've got a few ideas for the tweaks menu which include - Better organization of the different catagories - fixing spelling and case of alot of words as well making a standard layout and better comments - including default values for all the reg tweaks as they apear after a fresh install of WinXP Pro SP2. This job is going to take me awhile to get done as I now have 2 different files that I have to sort through and compare. Good thing I don't have a life hehehe.
  2. One thing that we can do to stop people from just running the file is the take out the first line of code or just rem it out. Without it, windows will error out and say it's not a valid reg patch. thus people would have to be smart enough to add that line in or to take off the " ; " so that it's useable, if they do that then they obviously take responsibility for running the file. As for explaining to people I woudl not even bother. It's no difference then epoepl who walk onto the street withotu looking both ways and get upset if they are hit with a car. I disagree with having the change log in a seperate file. If it's included with teh reg tweaks then it's easyer to find and peopel can search for what has been added, changed etc... as for the file size, once you zip the file up the size is marginal ar best unless you have a few million peopel downloading the file thus making bandwidth an issue. anyways, i'll look at the new file you made and try to organize the change log and make sure it's all up to date and stuff. I've got a few ideas I want to incororate into the file anyways. cheers ya know i was just thinking. We could keep all changes and addidtions intended for the official tweaks file in a seperate file....then I can actaully keep things uptodate and current. You see I already pass this file around on a couple forums and already have a mirror for it. If everyone made changes to the file and gave it their own version number then it will be a mess for everyone and we'd end up liek the last topic where it's all chaos. I know it'll be inconveient for some people but it'll help keep things better organized. I know you can appriciate the need and reason for version numbers as well keeping thins organized.
  3. hey guys long time no see. Just a bit of ranting but no hard feelings intended well I looked through all the reg tweaks that were added and how the original file was modified. I'll say i'm impressed at the ammount of info added, however i'm a bit disapointed in how the change log has been kept upto date .. rather the lack there of. I'll be going through the file once again to sort through it. At the very least i've seen people ask what "EXACTLY" has been changed, added, etc in the file, and this is the reason I added the changelog to the file in the first place. All you have to do is check out the changelog in the newest version and everything "SHOULD" be listed. "; Sep 28, 2004: ver 1.4 ; - Many corrections/modifications as per proved reports by members ; - Start Menu configuring keys put together, lots of security tweaks, right-click options ; Oct 01, 2004: ver 1.5 ; - Yet another Marathon session of corrections/sorting. Too many to list. ; - Lots of new tweaks ; Oct 08, 2004: ver 1.5 ; - Many corrections as suggested, and warnings inserted for safety ; Oct 10, 2004: ver 1.6 ; - All tweaks for File Search put together ; - Recycle Bin and Start Menu errors corrected this really does not help the people including myself who want to keep things up to date. well enough of my ranting. I'll be puting together an OFFICAL 1.4 file for all you guys in the next few days as it'll take a while for me to go over everything. I'm not saying I don't appriciate the work done here in keeping the file current, and don't want hard feelings as I know how much work is involved in organizing this file (don't forget i went over almost 100 pages of posts to make this file) just that a bit more care needs to be taken into account for changes and additions. just to confirm, the file avliable in the first post is current and up to date as of this post? I want to make sure I've got everything and can monitor any further changes. Thanks John Creator of the OFFICAL Johnny Do Reg Tweaks File
  4. @Mercury Thanks for the info, i'll update the reg file with the changes @Mod I'll update the file on my web site later tonight but still keep the v1.3 since this was just a clarification in describing the tweak. please feel free to update the first post. new file will be up by 9:00 EST. Good idea on the .txt file extension, that way it'll force people who are not too sure about things to rename the file and at the same time force them to think about useing the reg file directly.
  5. Mercury Remove All Internet Explorer Add-ons ;----- ;----- Remove All Browser Helper Objects ;----- ;[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects] ;[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects] ;----- ;----- Remove All Browser Extensions ;----- ;[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions] ;[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions] ;----- ;----- Remove All Toolbars ;----- ;[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar] ;[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar] can you please elaborate on the above code please? You have not explained exactly what it does or examples on how it works to our benifit. Everyone else. I am now done version 1.3 It has everything from the first topic (that was 1.2) and everythign up to this point except the above code. If you have wrtten any changes in previous messages and not explain what the tweaks are, how they are used, why we need them or any usefull info at all then I have ignored it. All changes are listed in the change log. If you have posted somethign and it's not there then pleaes repost or e-mail me and i'll add it. Only posts that are valid, varrified, and documented will be added. A simple "Added status menu to bottom of explorer" is enough descriptsion for us, in the code above, why would we need to remove teh IE extensions??? MOD: if you wish you can post the link to the file on my server as well your own if you are mirroring the file (good idea) reg tweaks Oh, if anyone wants to look at the services list and make sure they are corrent and optimized i'd sure appriciate it. I heard somewhere that i've turn off a few needed services or didn't turn off a service that can go. *shrugs* i don't remember and I list the message. hope you guys enjoy the fruits of my labor hehe. cheers c\_/
  6. Hey guys, my newest version with varrious fixes and corrections is here reg tweaks hopefully a mod can update the link on teh first page. i will be keeping this file online until I get rid of my web site which is not anytime soon. If you want to mirror the file Please feel free to do so with respect please mention my name. *note this file does not include any new tweaks contained in this topic as I have no have time to read through them yet. It is a compilation and fixes to teh first topic that was originally made. When i have time I'll go through what you guys have talked about here and made it into version 1.3 of the reg tweaks file. Oh yeah new stuff in teh file is a change log and version number so you guys can easily follow along what is what.
  7. I just updated my reg file with all mentioned fixes and additions. It will be hosted here Johnny Do's Custome Reg Tweaks It is now at version 1.1 and has a change log incorporated into it so you know if you have teh newest version. It does not have alot of the visual settings that have been posted here as they are pretty much custome to the individual. A few exceptions to this but you can look at the file adn comment out what you dont' want. Perhaps a mod can sticky this link in a FAQ if/when this topic is closed and locked. * many thanks to the members of this forum that have helped me create this and spot any problems and inconsitancies.
  8. Are these only for IE, or do they disable signature-checking when opening EXE files in Explorer too? Are there any other LowRisk FileTypes? TIA correct if if i'm wrong, but basically when you download a file weither it's a .wav, zip, exe, or whatever from the net you now get a warning message from SP2 askign you if you really want to run/load that file. the above will disable this feature. the lowrisk files are the file types you commonly download from the net as to not get this message box when you load these files.
  9. Evilvoice: humm strange .. it should work as I have not noticed any problems with it for the last year or so. ok then use my pop3 account cronkj [at] rogers.com (obviously you'll have to substitute the [at] for the @ symbol ) I have made the changed to my reg file thus far reported in this forum. there is one key for IE for checking exe file signatures that are duplicate. they now both read "no". I want to keep both of them as they are both a IE tweak and a SP2 tweak. if you want, track me down on MSNM with j_cronk@hotmail.com (I do not accept e-mail at all on this account)
  10. I looked throught he network tweaks and coudl not find the error that you seemed to spot. I have alsnot not received any files or instructions from you saying where it is. Can you please forward these fixes to me? thanks
  11. to those that haev found any bugs in my tweaks if you could please forward them to my e-mail i'd sure appriciate it j-cronk [at] writeme.com I know it's very possible to miss things and I've tried my best to look for duplicate but when you look at as much code as what's in that file your eyes go cross eyed. Besides then it'll be up to date for everyone to dl. It would be best to edit the original large file and add a comment just before it with a ";****" so it's easy to use the search to find it.
  12. you are correct in that the one big file contains all the smaller files. I did this to make it easyer to make changes. if you don't mind sending me the changes i'd appriciate it ... perhaps if you coudl make a comment with ; *** then i could use find and see where the changes are. saves you telling me specifically. thanks
  13. to the best of my knowledge its dword ...... If you don't mind sending me those errors I'd love to fix them up. Take into consideration that I copied the info for most of them from this forum and a fe other web sites so i can only assume they are correct unless I made a coupel spelling mistakes. but yeah lmk what you have when your done. (prefer e-mail j-cronk@writeme.com as I am not a regular forum user here right now)
  14. WAR: I dont' mind at all. It's funny though because both links still work for me. I will be taking down the second link as there is no need for me to use up web space for duplicates. the link to Johnny Do's Reg Tweaks will stay up. Nologic: there was a few items such as visual settings and window placement that alone have several lines of code each. I hav not included these things a visual settings are personal to each person. The tweaks I have here are performance related, added features (contect menus, add users, open file with, etc). I hae also excluded a few such as disabling the swap file as most people do not have 1 gig or more of ram and disabling the swap file with less thena gig would probably lead to more problems then good. I went out to create a file that is much more generic that can be used on anyone's computer without adverse affects. By all means take a look at your reg file and look at the files I made and you can compare and add which ever you need.
  15. ok .. that has got me puzzeled. all that it is is a zip file with a dozen .reg files in it. I have NAV 2004 with newest updates. Could it be possible that the program your useing thinks it's a virus based on file name ?? *shrugs* *edit* I just downloaded the file (it checked out fine) so I renamed it and uplaoded it again Johnny Do's Reg Tweaks Seriously though what you said has me concerned. I just don't see how a virus program would give you a result like that unless it was doign it by file name alone. Either way I gave you a new link and I challenge anyone to prove me wrong. Both files are up and running.
