  1. Sounds like DeVicky Word is exactly what you're looking for: --iWindoze
  2. I've got a copy of Publisher 2002 that I've been using for various things and am planning on buying a copy of Office 2010 Pro which also comes with Publisher. Over the years I've made a lot of files with my copy of 2002 Publisher--will I be able to open those with the latest and greatest version bundled with Office 2010? Are there any issues with the new docx format and Publisher? Should I expect to worry about some kind of pubx or something? (That sounds like a bad bar, doesn't it? ) Thanks in advance. --iWindoze
  3. I'm glad to see valuable software has not been lost! Has there been any further success on getting the eeepc (or other netbooks) to run Win9x fully? --iWindoze
  4. Well bear in mind we're not exactly using proper drivers now and the ones we have are not likely to have been optimized all that much. Speaking of bears, did anyone manaage to save the bearwindows video drivers? His site was one of the many that suffered webrot due to the death of Geocities. The documentation can be retrieved via the internetarchive, but not the drivers themselves. See: http://web.archive.org/web/20080118204712/...ndows/vbe9x.htm I suspect if we were to ever get good drivers based on what can be gleaned from the FOSS drivers we'd get much better battery life out of our eeepcs even in Win9x. Unfortunately there don't seem to be any low level driver programmers willing to give things a look, so we're unlikely to know one way or another any time soon. --iWindoze
  5. Oh well. I was hoping we would see some action on this since the eeepcs (and most netbooks) are a known hardware set with mostly complete FOSS drivers to crib from. If we are to see Win98SE take center stage again for one last bow on modern hardware the netbook seems to me to be its best opportunity. If we could only get someone who has experience in writing drivers for the OS to look through the Win98 driver kit and hack away... --iWindoze
  6. The one from MDGx's site: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm (search for "Driver Development Kit (DDK)" which should take you to his hosted Win9x DDK, which could conceivably be useful to resurrecting Win9x on newer systems for someone who knows how to make good use of it...) --iWindoze Has there been any movement on this? --iWindoze
  7. /BUMP for updates What has happened since with this project? --iWindoze
  8. There is a window manager that behaves like standard Win95: http://www.csg.is.titech.ac.jp/~kourai/qvwm/index-en.html Unfortunately the lack of development means you'd have your work cut out for you if you wanted to implement a distro with it. I tried it out about a year ago and discovered it was unable to see most of my applications in its start menu because the Linux Standard Base (LSB) and freedesktop.org have moved on quite a bit since QVWM was last worked on. I was still able to run applications if I started a terminal and ran them from there though, like in the older days of Win3.x If someone were to start hacking away and reworking the file system so it behaved more like standard Win9x and restructuring the QVWM so that it was compatible with freedesktop.org standards for post application install menus, perhaps with Linux from Scratch...if they were willing to do a LOT of work, plus combined with WINE... You might have something! Or you could just install Reactos... --iWindoze
  9. The one from MDGx's site: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm (search for "Driver Development Kit (DDK)" which should take you to his hosted Win9x DDK, which could conceivably be useful to resurrecting Win9x on newer systems for someone who knows how to make good use of it...) --iWindoze
  10. This older thread should prove interesting for anyone seeking to actually give doing this a go: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=81068 --iWindoze
  11. Has anyone tried looking at the Linux drivers and used the Win98SE driver kit that was posted in these forums awhile ago, to see if building better drivers was possible? I'd do it myself, only I am not a coder. --iWindoze
  12. If you have previously run Win2000\XP on your EeePC, could you try copying the entire C:\Windows directory to another partition or flash drive and upon installing Win98SE, point the device manager to X:\Windows\INF and the SYSTEM32\Drivers directory for *DLLs? I've had some luck in the past doing this with hardware that supposedly could not be installed in Win9x, and would like to know whether this trick works for you as well on your Eee. --iWindoze UPDATE: I gave this a whirl last night late into the evening. Probably should have waited until I was more awake so I could remember what all I tried and did... Basically I was able to install some things in device manager this way but not nearly as much as I'd hoped. I remember getting the ACPI to install and something having to do with HDA audio, only that was conflicting with something called "motherboard resources" so I don't know. Also I never even saw the too much memory errors on my gig of RAM, possibly because I'd extracted the Unofficial SP2 for Win98SE into the cabs directory and it did something at install time? I had the mouse and keyboard stop working during hardware detection, but was able to work around this by plugging my spare USB mouse and continue on. I don't know WHY it worked, just that it did. Here's hoping some of the more savvy people on this board will be able to make some sense of the above and hack our way into better driver support...
  13. It's been a couple of days, and no responses. I don't want to be spamming the board, so I'll ask: Did I perhaps post this in the wrong section or something? If so, could someone please recommend where on MSFN I might be able to get an answer? Thanks! --iWindoze
  14. I used D-Fend Reloaded to configure and setup Lord of the Realms for a friend of mine, but since that's the only game she plays that is old enough to need Dosbox, I was wondering if anyone could recommend what I could do to make it so the game itself launches directly from a shortcut? That is, the shortcut would simply take the configuration files from D-Fend Reloaded and launch the game full screen until she's done with it and then quit entirely back to the desktop when she's done playing. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance! --iWindoze
  15. Its been awhile, so I have to ask--any updates on this? I'm happy enough with my Ubuntu install, but being that I really cut my teeth on Win9x I'm hoping these issues get worked out and I can install Win9x for a little mucking about. Besides, I can't imagine Win9x taking as long to boot up as Ubuntu does on my EeePC... --iWindoze
  16. I intend to keep searching the forums, but where is this Media Center at any way? While I am impressed with the sidebar you've created, I have more need of a workable Media Center app for Win9x at the mo... --iWindoze
  17. This has probably been answered elsewhere, but have you considered using something like XIS (XPize Installer System) for this? I mean in the sense it can do a reshack on the already existing executables and DLLs in the system to be Renovatio'd instead of requiring the extraction and replacement of (possibly) incompatible versions of the files you customize. Have you given this any thought? --iWindoze EDIT - removed quoted text
  18. I've taken to doing some computer work for extra cash lately and it's been working pretty good for me. This last Monday I and my business partner went to some guy's house who had a Gateway running WinXP Home with 640mbs of RAM on a P4. We had the devil's own time with it because it kept on freezing on us--we were barely able to transfer over his outlook express addressbook and his My Documents folder as it was. The biggest issue was the way the screen kept on displaying strange characters in text mode. Once it got into Acronis or Windows it was fine (except for the freezing) but we kept on seeing strange corruption on the screen when we tried booting up Ubuntu, BeOS PE 3.5, Bart PE, and Windows setup. I managed to snap two pictures of the Windows setup screen with my Palm Zire 72... Does anyone have any idea what the 'eck we're looking at? Is it some kind of bios virus? We checked the actual bios itself and that seemed fine--all words were in perfect English and the language was set to English. I keep thinging it almost HAS to be a bios virus--how else was it able to effect three different OSes? I don't see how it could be video card related...could it? It's a Nvidia Geoforce something..I forget now. Any ideas? --iWIndoze
  19. Oh I agree! but I was hoping he'd get inspired and put together something that would combine parts of this process, his addons from the RP7 and the other inf installer on this board... Thanks I appreciate it! I'm grabbing it now and will try to give it a gander once I'm not quite as tired as I am now--it's a bit late where I am at the moment. I'll try to read it over more in the morning... --iWindoze
  20. Does this mean there is a chance of getting Win9x to work on the ASUS EEEPC after all?? Huzzah!!! --iWindoze
  21. I think I remember trying to hunt this (or an earlier version of it) about a year or two ago only to find it had disappeared and gone underground. Any chance you could translate the HOWTO for us Tihiy? --iWindoze
  22. Has anyone with one of these chipsets tried installing the Win2000 drivers? I ask because I recall that being one of the ways to get graphics cards working on Win9x when a driver was unavailable... Also: Has anyone managed to use the Win98 DDK to any avail? I'm really hoping someone manages to get this chipset supported, as it will be used in the ASUS Eee 700\701 laptops and I'm hoping to get Win98SE installed on them for maximum usage of disk space and performance. --iWindoze
  23. LOL I was going to say congratulations--you've reinvented 98Lite... but there you go... and I don't think 98lite has that issue. Now on the topic of shell replacememnts, have you ever heard of the "Revenge of Mozilla"? More info here.... As for real shell replacements, have you ever investigated LiteStep? One of the sites I used to go to often back in the day when I was able to get Win9x to install on more of my hardware was ShellFront, which has more information on LiteStep as well as many more other shells. Sadly the whole shell replacement scene never really managed to take off as well as it should have... --iWindoze (hoping to have helped)
  24. First off, it's great to see you back in action again! I know I wasn't the only one here beginning to get worried... Secondly, since you are beginning to add unofficial updates and fixes, could you consider adding the Maximum-Decim Native USB Drivers to the USP? Personally I consider something as major as USB support for external drives to be an important part of any service pack! Also in this same vein could you consider adding the Enable48BitLBA and Copy2Gb patches? --iWindoze
