  1. If the user doesn't get any performance benefit by enabling the AHCI mode with Intel ICH8 chipset mainboards, why do you suggest nevertheless to do it and to load the modified AHCI drivers? Actually, from everything I know and read, ACHI does not improve performance for anyone in lots of situations. At the same time, HD Tach is an old program that isn't even supported anymore. My testing was pretty informal and more software designed to really test the benefit of ACHI v IDE would be needed. Here are a few reasons why you'd want ACHI, hot-plugging and native command queuing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_Command_Queuing Here is a reason why you wouldn't want NCQ: "However, the current (as of 2004) technology actually slows down HD access in certain applications, like games and sequential reads & writes, because of the added latency induced by NCQ logic[1]." From my understanding, NCQ is a nice feature for someone who doesn't want to worry about a fragmented hard drive or doesn't do that much sequential read/writing, especially on servers. At this stage in time, I believe NCQ does not really have much of a performance hit anymore (I currently sport a 7200.10 that is 3 generations later). Additionally, in another 4 years I see XP as going the way of 98, most people will be running Vista with the remnants still running it. Vista natively supports ACHI, which means there would be very little reason to not use it.
  2. PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2824&CC_0106.DeviceDesc this strange entry is fixed with this line PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2824&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel® 82801HB SATA AHCI Controller" In other words, it just sets the display name properly. I fixed this by updating the driver with my newer version. As a side note, I have done performance testing and AHCI has no performance benefit seen in HD Tach. This is compared to vista in IDE, XP in IDE, and XP in AHCI
  3. I can confirm that my system is running in ACHI mode, since everything is set to it in the BIOS, except I have a strange entry in the device manager. NOTE: Missed one line in the .inf file, so I am replacing the one I uploaded at rapidshare. If anyone has used the old one and integrated it DO NOT WORRY as it looks to be just literally a string setting for what name to display in the device manager.

    crash in uxtheme.dll

My third try was a success. Patching uxtheme is indeed causing the problem.

    crash in uxtheme.dll

I actually have had this happen to me twice right now. The first time I had everything in that .ini plus OnePiece IE7 addon. The second time I removed the IE7 addon thinking maybe there was some sort of strange conflict that happened there, but it still happened. This time I am going to turn off uxtheme and manually patch it. Here is my .ini from my second try [Main] Env = 1.4.1 - 2.0.50727.42.Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Target = Windows XP Professional SP2 - 5.1.2600.2180 - English (United States) [Tasks] Remove Components Unattended Setup Integrate Drivers Hotfixes and Update Packs Tweaks Create a Bootable ISO Options [Components] ;# Applications # 6. Just wanted to add in order to have ICH8 achi/raid support you need to modify the files that site says, which I have done, but have not tested yet. Here are those files: http://rapidshare.com/files/81772146/iaahci.inf.html FIXED VERSION http://rapidshare.com/files/81542029/TXTSETUP.OEM.html It really is easy to maintain the iaahci.inf and txtsetup.oem, since you basically add in a total of 4 entries. Additionally, these files aren't updated that often.
  7. I just wanted to let you know Fernando that plain old ICH8 does indeed support ACHI, http://kerneltrap.org/node/7582 , contains the information about it. You might want to add it in as an "experimental" and a use at your own discrepancy type of warning.
  8. Easiest thing to do would be for someone else to test out the same exact session and see what happens for them in VMWare Server. I think I'm going to grab Virtual PC 2k4 and see what happens there as well.
  9. Nobody seems to really care that there is indeed something in nLite 1.21 that allows you to not complete an install. In order to find what was going wrong I tested out SP1, a nLite slipstreamed SP2, a nLite based off the splipstreamed SP2 w/ only hotfixes, and a nLite based off a new splipstreamed SP2 w/ only everything else that nLite allows you to change straight from the program and no addon/hotfix packs of any sort. SP1 worked SP2 worked SP2 hotfixes did not work SP2 w/ everything else did not work and froze at 37 minutes just like I previously said Attached is what I ran for SP2 w/ everything else everything else is the following Remove Components, Unattended Setup, Tweaks, Options Last_Session.ini
  10. I tried nLite a second time with more of the same hang, changed one thing and added in something else. 11. This nLite iso did indeed fail on a real system.
  12. Only additional thing is Ryan's Update Pack
  13. It seems like from reading another thread that nLite isos sometimes fail in VMWare, but will work fine in a real install like I guessed could be the case. It simply must be an issue of certain files VMWare requires that I removed.
  14. I decided for the first time to check out my nLite install through VMWare and had it hang at 37 minutes. I tried using my sp1 cd and that worked perfectly fine. 15. I've used nLite for the past 2-3 years and since I'm about to build a new rig I came to get the latest version of 1.21. However, I've been reading up and it seems that the latest version has more problems than it is worth especially for what I use it for. I use nLite for the hotfix integration, tweaking services, preferences, etc. I don't use it for any application installation as I prefer to do that manually to always be installing the latest version of things plus I am planning this time to move the Documents and Settings, My Documents, etc. with TuneUp Utillities. So what are your opinions?
