Hi, I was wondering, why doesn't running driverback BASE on my mostly clean nlite install (no drivers integrated, sp3, chipset is nforce 6100/nforce 425, board is MSI K9N6SGM-V) work when I boot my nlite cd on this particular box, it sees the array, I start the install, but when the textmode part end, after it reboots for the first time, it never completes booting and just reboot endlessly from reading the first post, it appears my problem is that it's using the MS IDE drivers, but I can't figure out how to fix this I guess I could only integrate the sataraid drivers and make one special cd just from this box, but then it appears intel boxes have a similar problem is there no way to use driverpacks to make one nlite cd that boot and install on any machine ?

I made a script a while ago that cleans up the start menu but since you have to account for multiple version of windows (2k xp vista) and different languages (different paths and different shortcut names) and you want all users to have identical start menu so you have to move all the short cuts to "all users" and you want to make sure shortcuts are readable by all (if you install an app as admin then copy the link to all users then login as user the link -may- be non-functionnal) this is a lot of stuff to think about, and then you have the whole list of actual links and folders you want to look for I was wondering, isn't there some automated start menu manager out there ? I mean surely you don't go through all this trouble of fine tuning windows to install on hundreds of computers and then leave a start menu like this (just an example )

how about a thanks to gamehead200 he did a superb job, is answer is complete he even had pictures just because you're angry at your tech for removing those UI atrocities and now it's running your canned answer sheet for your drones doesn't mean we're somehow responsible or that we owe it to you to help you of course that tech probably left you and now you don't know how to rebuild his install cd or something and it's still faster than using an original or reading up on automated installs eh ? I'm p***ed !!! argg !

Hi, I'm running Windows 2003 R2 x64, nlited with 1.2.1 after installing nvidia drivers (but it could be something else , like running windows update, but I'm fairly certain the culprit is either nvidia nforce or video drivers) I got the following symptoms opening "Computer Management" I had a popup saying snap-in failed to initialize Name: performance logs also trying to start manually start the "Performance Logs and Alerts" would fail starting it via the console would say something to the effect that it failed and "pdh.dll was not found" although the file was present also trying to install Disk keeper would fail, because during the install it tries to start the service and if that fails the install fails manually running Diskeeper\DkService.exe would also give the same error as running C:\SYSTEM\PROGRAMS\WINDOWS\system32\smlogsvc.exe (Performance Logs and Alerts) on an unrelated note please be careful , if you search for a file that is in your windows/system32 from outside of windows for example searching "pdh.dll" by opening c:\, then hitting F3 and searching for it would yield no result even if the file is present, this is part of windows' babysitting algorythm that search does not return files from windows or windows/system32 so make sure when you search for a file that the search path is at least "c:\windows" the fix was simply to overwrite SMLOGCFG.dll from an original from your install CD and then re-registering it with regsvr32 smlogcfg.dll following the total lack of response posts from my last post I am not interested in documenting this further without resquest bye shodan

Hi, I just decided to give a try install windows with nLite 1.2 RC and "Windows 2003 R2 64bit Enterprise VOL Edition" nlite recognize my cd as Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition service pack 1 build 1830 size 423.46 please refer to attached Last Session.ini file for my nlite settings a little bit about my box it's using a MSI K9N Platinum SLI (nForce 570-based) I have 2 300gb hdd in strip raid 0 at time of install there was a usb mass storage device accidentally plugged in that might have been the cause of one of my problems (it was detected by the installer as the 2nd drive) my hdd has a single ntfs partition I will start with the minor glitches and keep the big (possibly probably a windows bug and not an nlite one anyway, but it should be documented anyways) ok when I finished the install it asked for cd2 to finish the install , I have it some where but I did want to go get it right away so I hit cancel, I'm not sure what on there but it's probably crap I don't need anyway, is there a way to remove that dialog ? next I noticed moving windows was in "wireframe" mode so I set "Show window contents while dragging" to on (it was off) that is strange because I have in my ini file "Visual Effects-Show window contents while dragging-Enable" when I right-clicked "My Computer" the software menuitem was missing even though My Computer-Add Software to Context Menu was in my inifile (this used to work with nlite1+windows2k3-x64 r1) this last problem is probably pebkac but I can't find where to remove "Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration" , I can't find it in the "Components" step , I may be going blind ! but I can swear it used to be in there ?!? somewhere .... ok I had also minor tweaks but these have never been part of nlite , their just little annoyances that may not be fixable with nlite anyway when I open a folder for the first time I right-click the toolbar and I set -> Customize... -> Text options -> No text labels after that I click in the folder window View -> List (the default is details for my computers but list for other folders) then I click tools -> Folder Options -> View (tab) -> "Apply to all folders", next I uncheck "Remember each folder's view settings" and click ok (I know there is in Tweaks -> Change Explorer Folder View to: Details) but there's isn't one for "List" also it doesn't apply to all folders and it doesn't uncheck "Remember each folder's view settings" I also uncheck "Display Simple folder view in explorer's folder list" out of habit but I'm not even sure what it does.. probably something I don't like finally (before the big one) I go to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced -> Troubleshoot -> and I move the "Hardware Acceleration" to Full this has been a weird problem on my old nlite1+win2k3 installs , if you install nvidia driver's this slider will reset to it's default settings , and sometime it will spontaneously reset to default when you change other things video card related, this is probably nvidia's fault (also if you disable the nvidia tray icon it will sometime come back without reason , it will also come back if you reinstall the driver or change some settings ,maybe even when you install a game !) I'm quite sure it's nvidia screwing up ok now the big one a little backstory first not being content with having 4 more directories with space in their names on my root I decided to change my targetpath, profiledir, programfilesdir and programfilesdir(x86) programfilesdir=c:\usr programfilesdir(x86)=c:\usr\x86 targetpath=\usr\windows profilesdir=%systemroot%\home this was when I installed back in january with nlite1+win2k3x64 I had lots of troubles with my previous file hierarchy I had documented the problems in this previous thread http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=61978&hl= but it was somewhat incomplete because I hadn't seen all the troubles yet with this previous install, some application installer went nuts (for example sun java jre, acrobat reader 7, the game "call of juarez", Active Perl) the most common theme of failure was that when I first tried to install it would suggest a path like c:\usr\x86\x86\x86\x86\Sun\Java\JRE1.5.0.02 then I'd correct the path manually "C:\usr\x86\Java" but instead it would end up putting files everywhere ! c:\usr\x86\Java\ c:\usr\x86\x86\Common Files\Java... c:\usr\x86\x86\x86\Sun\.... c:\usr\x86\x86\x86\x86\x86\x86\Common Files\Java c:\usr\x86\x86\x86\x86\x86\x86\Sun\... and more often that not the installer would end up failing completly sometime I could get a working install by pointing it to c:\home\java but some installer (like vmware workstation) completely failed silently or other (like BlueMSX) would just make their links to the wrong destination but otherwise sort of work so this time I changed my file hierarchy a little bit to be a little cleaner programfilesdir=c:\system\programs programfilesdir(x86)=c:\system\programs-x86 targetpath=c:\system\programs\windows profilesdir=%systemroot%\system\home first, nlite 1.2rc doesn't provide a way to set programfilesdir(x86) so for now I only set programfilesdir and nlite used the default of c:\system\programs(x86) I installed windows , I had a weird problem that is probably caused by me accidentally leaving a usb mass storage device plugged in during the install (documented here http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...659&st=315) once the install was done I had the following directory c:\system\programs c:\system\programs(x86) c:\system\programs\windows <== properly containing windows c:\system\home <== properly containing user profiles but also I had C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) C:\Program Files (x86)\Uninstall Information <= empty directory C:\Program Files (x86)(x86) C:\Program Files (x86)(x86)\Common Files\ODBC\Data Sources <= empty directory a registery search for the string "Program Files" returned the following erroneous entries (refer to attached file "incorrect_programfiles_entries.reg") erroneous entries are of 3 kinds shell extensions [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\wrifile\shell\printto\command] @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Windows NT\\Accessories\\WORDPAD.EXE\" /pt \"%1\" \"%2\" \"%3\" \"%4\"" uninstall information related [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Advanced INF Setup\IE40.Comctl32] "BackupFileName"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Uninstall Information\\IE40.Comctl32\\IE40.Comctl32.DAT" "BackupPath"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Uninstall Information\\IE40.Comctl32" and these two oddballs [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion] "PathName"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\WINDOWS" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ODBC\ODBC.INI\ODBC File DSN] "DefaultDSNDir"="C:\\Program Files (x86)(x86)\\Common Files\\ODBC\\Data Sources" since the c:\Program Files* are all empty I will delete them and see if trouble happens, or if they get re-created by windows or some installer I installed Sun Java JRE 1.5* who was notoriously f'ed up with my previous install and to my surprised it installed to C:\SYSTEM\programs(x86)\Java\jre1.5.0_07 so all in all this -might- not be as much a problem as is was under the condition that programfilesdir(x86) isn't a sub-directory of programfilesdir , but there still is a bug somewhere, I do not believe this is a bug with nlite , but I think that nlite could compensate and fix the problem anyways (searching and correcting erroneous path in the registery and deleting c:\Program Files* if they are empty) this is all for tonight I'll try to follow up on this tomorrow bye ! Hi, I set my computer name in "Unattended" step tab "Network ID" then Computer Name oh btw, when I try to rename my administrator account to the same thing as my computer name, nlite complaints that you can't have them be the same .. , it'll let you do it if you press next twice and so far windows didn't give me any trouble and I've been using it like that since january !

Hi, I have a nforce 570-based board (msi k9n platinum sli) I downloaded 9.16_nforce_winxp64_international_whql.exe from nvidia (http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/nForce/9.16/9.16_nforce_winxp64_international_whql.exe) (this file is for nForce 570 SLI/570/550 chipsets, there is a separate file for 590 users http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/nForce/...ternational.exe that file probably isn't whql'd) I did integrate drivers , then insert-> single driver , then selected IDE\WinXP\sataraid and textmode next I tried to add IDE\WinXP\sata_ide as pnp driver but it said can't add it's already there I ended up with this in my "last session.ini" [Drivers] C:\Public\Downloads\9.16_nforce_winxp64_international_whql\IDE\WinXP\sata_ide\nvata64.inf,0 C:\Public\Downloads\9.16_nforce_winxp64_international_whql\IDE\WinXP\sataraid\nvrdx64.inf,BUSDRV C:\Public\Downloads\9.16_nforce_winxp64_international_whql\IDE\WinXP\sataraid\nvrdx64.inf,RAIDCLASS made my iso , put it in the drive , install went fine without a sataraid-related itch well I had another problem but I'm not sure it's related to this driver when I ran my nlited install, first I got the textmode part (properly detected the driver & partitions) but after it rebooted it complained that "system root/system32/ntoskrnl.exe" was missing or corrupt with a rescue disk I checked and the file was in the right place by chanced I though of looking at my boot.ini file it said multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\SYSTEM\PROGRAMS\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition" /noexecute=optout /fastdetect but the entry of my previous install said multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\USR\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin /usepmtimer so I changed the entry of the new system to multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\SYSTEM\PROGRAMS\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition" /noexecute=optout /fastdetect and it worked fine I had a usb drive plugged in that could be the cause (but I would have expected a wrong disk() not rdisk() ?? well anyway there are other things wrong with this install so I'll have to reinstall anyways, I'll keep you informed)

the organize (command bar) has got to go ! and if it's possible at all, it'll need nlite to do it also there's like 50 settings I change on a stock vista install , no way I'm installing vista again if it's not with nlite

none of those files are required for windows to run even if you run the nt virtual machine I'm not even sure it will use C:\WINDOWS\system32\command.com the nt command prompt is from cmd.exe and it executes .cmd and .bat scripts and the files on the root have no purpose at all except that some dos program might search for them , but when the virtual machine starts it looks for c:\%windowsdir%\system32\config.nt and autoexec.nt , the io and msdos.sys are not used and don't have a ntvm equivalent if you don't use the nt virtual machine (or the dos box , or "16 bit applications") then you don't need any of those files

Hi, I just "finished" trying to install w2k3-x64 but it failed (probably due to the nforce raid but I think I have it sorted out) the real problem is with the programfilesdir like to original poster states, nLine doesn't deal with the "programfilesdir(x86)" variable in an unattended install with an answer file it would be in the [unattended] section programfilesdir(x86)=C:\path\to\location what I tried to do with nLite was to set my programfilesdir to c:\usr ( and I would have set my programfilesdir(x86) to c:\usr\x86 ) but since there was no programfilesdir(x86) textbox I was only expecting to have a c:\usr and a "c:\program files (x86)" but instead I got c:\Program Files c:\Program Files (x86) c:\Program Files (x86)(x86) c:\USR c:\usr(x86) each folders had different things in them also I'd need to set my commonfilesdir and commonfilesdir(x86) I think where does nLite put the unattended answer file, maybe I can edit it manually just before I make the iso ? (the file that has things like UnattendMode=FullUnattended in it)

has it ? because I haven't seen it in 1.0 yet I might have missed it reinstalling windows in progress, so I guess I'll see
