  3. Evidently spurred on by the reception it got at Thursday's financial analysts meeting, Microsoft has decided to move ahead with plans to turn the Mojave project into a full-fledged Windows Vista marketing effort. As first reported by CNET News, Microsoft last week interviewed XP users who were skeptical of Vista and showed them what it called a secret new version of Windows, "Mojave." It was in fact Vista. The results, according to Microsoft executives, were almost universally positive, with participants expressing surprise when told it was actually Vista they had been using. For now, Microsoft has put up a teaser site, with plans to show the actual video footage next week. (As I mentioned before, Mojave was something put together in the past couple of weeks by internal Microsoft people and is not the larger advertising campaign coming from new ad agency Crispin Porter and Bogusky.) http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-9999971-56.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igSlM3tl2zE&NR=1 http://www.mojaveexperiment.com/# What do you think?

  10. PC Tools has announced its Spyware Doctor program as the latest addition to Google Pack, a "free collection of essential software". Google Pack includes Google Earth, Desktop, Picasa, Toolbar, Photos Screensaver, Talk and Video Player. It also includes partner software such as Mozilla's Firefox, Adobe's Reader, Norton Security Scan, RealPlayer, GalleryPlayer HD Images, Skype and now Spyware Doctor. "As part of this partnership we are providing an exclusive version of Spyware Doctor for Google Pack users," said PC Tools chief executive Simon Clausen. The free edition offers the usual spyware detection and removal as well as real-time protection with PC Tools' new File Guard technology. The free version is lacking a few features compared to the full version, such as Cookie Guard, Keylogger Guard, Startup Guard and Browser Guard. The free version also lacks phone support. http://www.itnews.com.au/News/49233,pc-too...oogle-pack.aspx
  11. Two years after announcing a somewhat vague software-distribution partnership, Google Inc. and Sun Microsystems Inc. have clarified their tactics for jointly attacking Microsoft Corp. and its ubiquitous Office software. Over the weekend, Google quietly began including Sun's StarOffice suite of word processing, spreadsheets and other workplace-oriented programs for free as part of the Google Pack download. The download package is part of Google's efforts to expand beyond Web search and control more of users' computing experience online and offline. It already includes Firefox, the No. 2 Web browser behind Microsoft's Internet Explorer, and RealNetworks Inc.'s RealPlayer, a key rival to Microsoft's own media player. By adding Sun's software, Google is giving a valuable endorsement to a server and software maker that saw demand for its products collapse after the dot-com bust and has struggled to return to sustained profitability ever since. StarOffice is Sun's commercial version of the freely distributed OpenOffice suite, which also was developed by Sun and has been downloaded about 100 million times. StarOffice typically costs $70 (euro52) to download but is being distributed by Google for free. It has more features than OpenOffice and typically includes technical support from Sun, though the free Google version won't. Both companies declined to comment on their financial arrangement. http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2007/08/16/1186857638646.html
