A friend has Vista RTM dual booting with Win XP. His DVD/RW drive is a Samsung TS-H552D In WinXP his DVD/RW works fine. Burning and reading. In Vista when he inserts ANY disk, ie: Software DVD or CD, Music CD, Blank CD, Blank DVD, DVD Movie, or any type of media AT ALL the drive spins up, then down and it does nothing. If you go to the drive through My Computer and double click the drive, with any of the above mentioned media you get the following error message: "Burn a Disc. Prepare this blank Disc Disc Title: "open box for title" Anyone have any ideas? thanks |

Thise aren't error messages, its asking you what you want to do because either it doesn't recognize the inserted media or it doesn't recognize the full capabilities of the drive (or really the drive its self even tho it shows up. have you tried updating the firmware on the drive? Yes, I've tried the firmware on Samsung's site. D/L the firmware for the drive listed, opened the flashing utility, loaded the firmware, and get the message that it's not the correct drive. I'm certain that the firmware I D/L was for the same drive, so I'm stuck. I've already told him to purchase another DVD/RW, as cheap as they are, it'll be the easiest way to fix it. I thought it might be a quirk that someone had a fix to. Apparently not. thanks anyway. |

I can confirm this is problem with Vista. I have an Optiarc drive. There are no firmware updates. Windows Media player plays the DVD-video fine. Every other way to access the file (Explorer, third party explorers, standard file dialogs) results in "prepare this blank disk" message. The fact media player recognises the disc indicates it's Vista, not the drive which is at fault. |

many people with plextor drives have similar problems, even after they put the latest firmware on. there is a kb article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us (don't know yet if that works), other suggestions are to remove the device from the device manager and have it detected again at the next reboot |

I have the same problem with my LG 16x DVD burner (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4167B ATA) I contacted LG, they said it will only be compatible if/when microsoft releases drivers for it. They will not be making firmware for it as the problem is on MS side. Their suggestion: Buy one of their new burners :| |

Same problem with the NEC ND-6650A (firmware 1.23). Updating the firmware to 1.5A RPC1 didn't fix it. A temporary solution : use the Nero Burning ROM's file browser to run or copy files from the DVD drive. This post has been edited by bola: Feb 27 2007, 02:37 AM |

I found out how to reproduce the problem on my dual-boot (XP-Vista) laptop. After installing and running Vista, if I reboot to XP and then to Vista again, the CD/DVD drive does not work anymore (Windows Explorer fails to read/display CD/DVD content). However, if I reboot from Vista to Vista again, the problem seems to be gone. Note that I installed Vista from booting the CD, on an empty partition, and that the CD/DVD reading problem was not there in the beginning. It only came after a few days, after I ran XP again! Hello, I work for Microsoft and am a Vista technician. The solution to this issue is quite simple: - Click on Pearl (aka start) - Type Device Manager in the Start Search field. - When Device Manager loads then go down to the DVD/CD-ROM drives selection - Right click on each drive in question then choose UNINSTALL - Reboot your PC or click on the little icon just below the help (when you put your mouse over it, it should say 'scan for hardware changes'. This SHOULD resolve your issue. Note: If you have any DVD Burning software installed or iTunes or any OLD CD burning software this will cause unwanted issues also and a CLEAN BOOT might be necessary. CLEAN BOOT - Click on Pearl - Type in Start Search "System Configuration" - Click on the SERVICES tab - Put a check mark into the 'Hide all Microsoft Service" - Click DISABLE ALL - Click APPLY - Click the tab that says STARTUP - Click DISABLE ALL - Click APPLY - Click OK - Click RESTART (if it prompts you) NOTE: This will turn off all 3rd party non-windows services and all startup applications IF there are no security programs blocking you from changing your startup environment. (Spysweeper will block you so it must be disabled before you do this) NOTE: Only do this as a troubleshooting method and ensure you go to the GENERAL tab and select the NORMAL startup option when you are done. ************* If this does not work remember that the CD or DVD ROM or RW is tied into your BIOS and it also has its own FIRMWARE. When you try to flash the BIOS using the Vista OS you will get an error message saying that you got the wrong model. Remember that the BIOS flash has nothing much to do with Vista directly as it is writing to the ROM of the device, thus if you were to either switch back to XP and try the BIOS Flash again or remove the drive and install it into another computer which has XP or 2000 installed then try the BIOS Flash again this might allow the installer to work proper and flash the BIOS properly. NOTE: If you do it wrong the drive will be dead and will be a nice paper weight. I hope this has been of assistance and I wish you all Good Luck. |

I have this same problem with my NEC ND-3520A DVD-RW drive. Ever since installing Vista, the drive recognizes anything you put in it as a blank disc. Strangely, it has been able to read some discs sometimes but the vast majority of the time it just spins up and dies, and when you click it in explorer it says it's blank. Right clicking the drive sometimes makes explorer freeze up for over five minutes. I cannot access the drive's data with any program whatsoever. I don't think it has anything to do with the actual disc, because discs that have worked once or twice before, don't work later, etc. I upgraded the firmware and tried uninstalling/reinstalling the device in Device Manager. I've tried it in safe mode as well. It didn't solve the problem. I've also noticed that after doing that, rebooting the computer with a disc in the drive causes Vista to fail booting. Burning works fine. I've been burning DVD's and threw a good amount of them away because I thought they were burning wrong, but turns out they burned fine and it was just Vista. Anyone been able to resolve this? This post has been edited by yook: Apr 2 2007, 01:06 PM |

I have a Samsung that I installed after installing Vista. I do not have any problems. I don't understand the nature of the problem. The only person who described this problem is post #1 and everybody else said they have a similar problem but no one had clearly described the problem with screenshots. |
