  1. I hope I’m not duplicating a prior thread, but I couldn’t find one on this topic IE6SP1 won’t load secure (https) sites anymore. Firefox3.5, mostly Firefox2.0, and Opera12 work OK with secure sites, so the network connection is not likely the problem In IE6, SSL3/TLS1 is enabled, security settings are set to default, cleared the cache, added secure sites to trusted sites, etc. I have installed the last Microsoft 2009 root certificates. I have reinstalled. The problem continues. It feels like secure sites are blocking IE6 I know IE6SP1 is obsolete: But I’m trying to get AOL9.0 to work. I think AOL9.0 is actually an Internet Explorer overlay. BTW, this bug also exists in my Win2K build Anybody else have experience with this bug? Any hints would be appreciated ....
  2. Just purchased a new Netgear MA111 Ver 2 Wireless USB adapter. It is attached to a Dell Latitude D630, using the Windows 98SE operating system in conjuction with my Cisco E1000 router. I have the correct WIN98SE adapter driver installed and working. However, when connected to my home network, this unit frequently disconnects, reconnects, then abruptly does both reconnecting and disconnecting. This makes using Windows IE and other internet software applications impossible and not work properly. I need help resolving this issue in order to obtain a flawless WiFi connection to the network. I have NOT found any troubleshooting information available in the package I received that might help resolve this this issue. I am not a happy camper tonight. Other computers on the network do not drop carrier from the router.
  3. Since I have been struggling with this project for over 1 year, and so many of you have supported that effort, I want to announce that as of last night I was finally able to achieve a WIN98SE install on my Del Latitude D630 laptop. Not perfect yet, but I actually have the installed Windows Screen which I was not able to achieve until now. This involved starting the setup on CDROM with the switches as follows: Setup /p i. That was the start. After the first reboot sequence, I had to go into the system.ini file and add the page length and buffer limitation settings. That is crucial to getting past the first reboot and finally then carefully sequencing the device settings which was a real bear! Once I got past all of that and finally arrived at a real Windows screen, I plugged in the U98SESP3.* driver and system upgrades, these immediate upgrades are essential to going further, since the expanded drivers opened up USB support functions. Now for the real bummer. This afternoon, the next day, my power supply shorted out, so I'm dead in the water having to wait and week or so to get a new one from Amazon.
  4. Windows 98 SE install issues.

Greetings msfn. I'm pretty sure this is where i'm supposed to post about this sort of issue, but if not i apologize and please let me know. Alright so. I'm going to make this as short as possible, and if further information is required i will elaborate so. I'm trying to install windows 98 second edition from the win9x project off pirate bay. Fantastic package. And....first i started off with trying to install it on a virtual machine with oracle virtual box. That worked flawlessly. But i didn't feel that was....eh...nostalgic enough. So i found an old asus motherboard i got back in....2006 or whatever, with a core 2 quad Q6600, etc, set it all up, and realized it was just a bit too new for the operating system. So then i found another old asus board with an AMD Athlon dual core in it. I figure this ones a bit closer to that era and wouldn't have as many issues trying to get it to install. I'm running 512 mb of ram due to the fact windows 99, without special mods, doesn't support more than 768mb of ram. I already ruled that out. The problem is with the IDE interface as far as i can tell. With the previous intel board, i was able to detect the hard drive, format it, etc. But as soon as i got into the actual OS install screen, it was LITERALLY loading pixel by pixel for each step. It was ridiculously slow and took me about a day and a half to get as far as i did. I had enough of that. Now, with this AMD board, when i boot off the CD, and attempt to start the setup with CD rom support, it won't detect the hard drive during the driver detection. However, when i go into fdisk, it shows up just fine as a active primary win98se partition. I'm not sure what to make of this information, and any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Unfortunately due to this stupid 500kb image limit, i can't provide images. I can try to best describe my situation if need be.
  5. anyone know how to get the mouse to work in safe mode in win98se? it is a usb mouse and has a usb-PS/2 adapter. It works fine in normal mode. Its just easier to use the mouse for navigation instead of the keyboards. I'm dealing with an issue with the sound blaster driver fault error as it won't let the pc get past boot process.

  7. Purchased a new (key code included) Windows 98SE installation package from Amazon. After several days of trying to install this OS on my new ACER ASPIRE ONE D255e netbook, the 3.5" floppy will not recognize the external Samsung CD/DVD device to load the OS files. I got around this hang up by copying and pasting the CD start up disk to a 64gb thumb drive, then click on setup, This worked flawlessly in copying the OS files to the C;\ drive of the netbook. It went so far as to successfully get to the first "reboot" to the point of recognizing the components on my computer. Then the hang up occurred! Screen said there was insufficient memory to progress; and that I needed to delete other running startup programs, or work with my autoexec.bat or config.sys files. QUESTION NOW: HOW DO I OVERCOME THIS HANGUP? SECOND QUESTION: WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO THE AUTOEXEC OR CONFIG.SYS FILES TO MOVE ON WITH THE INSTALLATION? FRANK: FIRST EDIT 2015/05/29: Nothing seemed to work to resolve this "insuffient memory issue until I stumbled upon the MS forum and it addressed this issue. Turned out that there was a "System.Ini" line that had to be added to fix this. Here is MS solution, and it works: QUOTE: "To work around this issue, add the following line to the [386enh] section of the System.ini file: MaxPhysPage=30000 This limits the amount of physical RAM that Windows can access to 768 MB. To do so, use the following steps: Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to edit the System.ini file. Add the following line in the [386Enh] section of the file MaxPhysPage=30000 Save the file, and then restart your computer. If this problem occurs during Windows Setup, use the following steps to resolve the issue: Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press the F8 key, and then choose Command Prompt Only from the Startup menu. For Windows 98, restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key until the Startup menu appears, and then choose Command Prompt Only. Change to the folder into which you are attempting to install Windows. Edit the System.ini file. To do so, type edit system.ini, and then press ENTER. Add the following line in the [386Enh] section of the file MaxPhysPage=30000 Save the file, and then restart your computer. Windows Setup should continue.UNQUOTE. The above solved the memory hangup during the initial install. However, additional hangups occurred rapidly after that, primarily in the hardware, and plug n play features. After the hangup, I had to restart manually, only to discover that starting in "Safe Mode" windows didn't recognize the above feature in safe mode! Now the Memory area again in the safe mode after it was resolved in the normal mode. Go figure!!!! Please write back if you have a clue what might be going on here.
  8. HELP: WinPcap installer fails on Win98SE

To download video streams I am trying to install "URL Snooper 2.37.01" on Windows 98SE (German language) with KernelEx 4.5.120. The program depends on the WinPcap driver and comes with versions 4.1.3 and 4.0beta2 - the latter is claimed to be compatible for Windows 98. Unfortunately both refuse to install. The WinPCap website claims "Starting from WinPcap 4.0beta3, support for the Windows 9x/ME family of operating systems has been dropped. The last builds supporting such OSes are WinPcap 3.1 and WinPcap 4.0beta2, both available in the archive." http://www.winpcap.org/install/default.htm However when I attempt to install the self-extracting EXE of 4.0beta2, its NSIS installer exits with the error requester "This version of Windows is not supported by WinPcap 4.0 beta 2. The installation will be aborted." When I tried to install version 3.1, the NSIS installer exits with the even stranger error popup "WinPcap 3.1 can be installed on 32-bit x86 systems only. The installation will be aborted" My CPU is an AMD K6-3+, which is definitely 32 bit x86 compatible. So the last version that still installs on Win98SE is WinPcap 3.1beta4, which seems to contain a different installer. Unfortunately it is too old and makes URL Snooper lock up, so I had to uninstall it. I have now manually unpacked the 4.0beta2-WinPcap.exe with 7zip. It contains the following directories and files: \$PLUGINSDIRmodern-header.bmpmodern-wizard.bmpioSpecial.iniInstallOptions.dllNSISdl.dllnxs.dllSystem.dll\$R0\$PLUGINSDIRUserInfo.dll\$SYSDIRPacket.dllpthreadVC.dllWanPacket.dllwpcap.dllnpf.vxd\$SYSDIR\driversnpf.sys\$TEMPWpBann.htmI copied the \$SYSDIR folder contents into "\windows\system", but I don't know what to do with the rest; it doesn't seem to be sufficient to work. Despite URL Snooper starts now (previously it complained missing Packet.dll) and shows the correct name of my USB ethernet adapter, the "sniff network" button triggers a popup requester "Automatic Network Adapter Detector FAILED | ERROR: Failed to find a suitable network driver."When I debug the WinPcap 4.0beta2 installation process in Dependency Walker, before the popup it throws the error: "GetProcAddress(0xBFF70000 [e:\windows\system\KERNEL32.DLL], "GetUserDefaultUILanguage") called from "h:\download\utilities\videos downladen\winpcap\4.0BETA2-WINPCAP.EXE" at address 0x00405D06 and returned NULL. Error:" Apparently the NSIS installer is incompatible with Windows 98 because the function GetUserDefaultUILanguage in kernel32.dll exists only since Windows 2000. Also KernelEx settings don't seem to change this. So I added in kstub822.ini to the "[Kernel32.dll]" section the following line to simulate it: [Kernel32.dll]...GetUserDefaultUILanguage=r0407 ; German language (added by =CO=Windler)...I tried this also with "e0", which is apparently supposed to suppress an error flag. [Kernel32.dll]...GetUserDefaultUILanguage=r0407e0 ; German language (added by =CO=Windler)...But this doesn't do anything. Even DependencyWalker still shows the same "returned NULL" error. I am desperate. Is there a proper way to simulate GetUserDefaultUILanguage?- How can I install the unpacked contents of 4.0beta2-WinPcap.exe manually?
  9. My old ironhorse computer recently nearly crashed. I've managed to revive it only to now have re-install windows and an EXPLORER.EXE error. I'm missing a shlwapi.dll file it says. Also, if you have a copy of the all-language version of the Shell32.dll file for Win98 that was created here by a power user long ago I need it too! plz reply here and I'll pm you my email address to send it! Thanks a million guyz ! RESOLVED!! I just found an old computer with WinXP on it and copied it's version of shlwapi.dll to my computer and it worked. I then oped up winfile.exe and typed control appwiz.cpl in the RUN box and un-installed Internet Explorer. The only IRONHORSE computer gallops onwards!!
