  1. General and specific solutions for problems regarding AU/WU/MU in Windows XP List of used abbreviations: AU = Automatic Updates AV = Antivirus IE = Internet Explorer KB = Knowledge Base MDL = My Digital Life Forums. Link: https://forums.mydigitallife.net/ MKB = Microsoft Knowledge Base MU = Microsoft Update OS = operating system OSs = operating systems WU = Windows Update WUMT = Windows Update MiniTool We all are well informed about restoring WU/MU in Windows XP. A lot of threads and solutions to get access to WU/MU website. But we are here in a Windows XP forum. Therefore, this thread is targeted on Windows XP only and is meant to collect and provide solutions for general or specific problems which can occur after or while restoring update functionality. The main WU/MU related thread, which is targeted on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista, is totally bloated and completely out of control, many post are definitely off-topic. To find general or specific solutions, you have to be a Sherlock Holmes or you'll need a lot of time to read tons of posts with no or low quality of information. And a lot of solutions are simply missing. I am no longer interested in posting new solutions or self-created fixes which can never be found again in such threads. From now on, I rather try to avoid posting in threads where people are talking permanently off-topic. Therefore, I decided to create my own one. Anyway, this main thread can be found here: https://msfn.org/board/topic/178377-on-decommissioning-of-update-servers-for-2000-xp-and-vista-as-of-july-2019/ The second post of this thread contains a numbered list of general solutions for problems regarding AU/WU/MU and methods of restoring WU/MU functionality in Windows XP. After performing these general solutions and methods, users are able to exclude errors or misconfiguration relating to AU/WU/MU in their Windows XP system. It is senseless to solve a specific problem if there is a general one. If WU/MU can't be restored generally and a user thinks about a reinstallation, the general solutions listed in second post can be tried first. There are different solutions to do this restoring successfully. General solutions: Link: https://msfn.org/board/topic/183498-general-and-specific-solutions-for-problems-regarding-auwumu-in-windows-xp/?do=findComment&comment=1216506 The third post of this thread contains a numbered list of specific solutions for problems regarding AU/WU/MU in Windows XP. These specific solutions will be provided with a meaningful title and a link to the creator's post in this thread. Specific solutions: Link: https://msfn.org/board/topic/183498-general-and-specific-solutions-for-problems-regarding-auwumu-in-windows-xp/?do=findComment&comment=1216507 The ninth post of this thread contains a numbered list of additional resources which can be helpful or informative to find an efficient solution for a specific problem. I'll only add resources relating to the topic of this thread. Additional resources: Link: https://msfn.org/board/topic/183498-general-and-specific-solutions-for-problems-regarding-auwumu-in-windows-xp/?do=findComment&comment=1216513 More solutions or resources can be added by posting in commenting zone. The idea is one solution, one post. The same applies to additional resources. Today I start to post some general solutions and methods, a brand-new specific solution and an additional resource. If you want to post an AU/WU/MU related solution or an additional resource in this thread, you can use the commenting zone to do this. Please post it by choosing a meaningful headline in bold and font size 18 for better visibility! If it seems to be a real solution (it's not my job to test them all) or an interesting resource, I will list it in second, third or ninth post with a link to the member's original comment for better overview. Due to the modular character of this thread each posted solution or resource can be upvoted or liked separately with credits to their poster. Any discussions or questions about these solutions or resources are explicitly welcome. But one thing must be totally clear, everything should relate to this topic. That means please stay on-topic! If you enjoyed this thread or maybe you found it interesting and helpful, we would be pleased about any reaction by liking or upvoting and of course commenting. Kind regards, AstroSkipper
  2. I got locked in one of those update loops. You know what I mean, probably. My Windows 10 would start an automatic update, then fail, and then reset itself to a previous version. This would happen all of the time. I managed to use one of the methods on this link to successfully do an update: https://www.alphr.com/microsoft/1001411/how-to-fix-windows-update-in-windows-10-if-it-becomes-stuck-1 Now, here is the reason why I am making this post. In case I want to ever do a completely fresh reinstall of Windows 10, I want to know how to do this because the CD (DVD, maybe?) and all I have is the ("OEM"?) sticker with the associated ID numbers.
  3. Is anyone having this problem lately? I've been trying to update the Windows Vista x64 installation and so far, when I try to use Windows Update in the Control Panel, the green glowing progress bar under Checking for Updates seems to be moving endlessly and taking hours, if not, forever to try to check for updates. Is there a easier solution to check for Windows updates on Vista without taking forever?
  4. I am grateful for Windows Updates Downloader, which seems like a great program. I do have a question. As you see in the screenshot I have used WUD to do a lengthy download of XP Service Pack 3 because I seem to have some files missing from that. i don't know what to do next because I don't know what the three square buttons at the top are. I don't see any wording when I hover my arrow by them. 5. Well for some reason Windows 7 would hang when scanning for new updates. I restarted and when the new updates showed up I tried to install them but was unable due to the updates hanging on downloading. After that I tried to do a system restore, didn't work, had to restore back. After that I stopped wuauserv and bits, deleted the contents of the software distrubution folder, restarted the services and tried to update only for it to hang again. I use Eset smart security that is always updated. Any more info needed tell me. Long and short is that I am desperate and completely frustrated at this POS laptop. Too bad I cannot simply uninstall and reinstall Windows updater. I am begging for help. Please, I am desperate not to do a full wipe and reload.
  6. Clean install of win 7 and went to get windows update to work and it runs for hours. shut it down. what's up with this glitch and how can it be fixed '
  7. I'm trying to get our corporate Office 2010 installer fully patched via dropping .MSP files in the \Updates folder and am running into a peculiar problem - updates seem to conflict with each other and undo one another's application. For example, if I drop SP2's extracted .MSP files in the \Updates folder and install Office, I can then run Windows Update and get a list of patches for Office 2010 that doesn't include SP2. Great, makes sense, I pre-installed it via the Updates folder. However, when I drop the MSP files from another patch into the folder, even if I rename them so as not to overwrite like-named files from the SP2 application, when I run Windows Update it shows SP2 as an available installation. It's a reduced filesize, but it's still there. This suggests to me that some component of SP2 is no longer installing once other updates are added to the folder. Complicating matters further, re-integrating SP2 then undoes some of the other patches and they show up in the WU update list. Has anyone had success in getting a fully-patched installation of Office made using offline patching, such that a "Check for Updates" operation will yield no missing patches? How did you do it?
  8. Hello! I'm using wsus to deploy patches to my windows 7 clients. Some of the clients forced a reboot after installation of updates with this message in the log; Launched new AU client for directive 'Forced Reboot'. I have enabled No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates Installations. Any ideas? Is there anything that override that setting?
  9. Did windows update stop working for win2k again? "Windows Update does not start in Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows 2000" It makes me sad. I pulled the latest root certs but still no love.
  10. I ran Windows Update (in fact Microsoft Update) today and it found 4 critical and 6 optional updates in less than 5 minutes! The last time it took more than an hour. Did Microsoft do something about this problem? Or it is just that there wasn't any updates for Internet Explorer 8? I have also uninstalled Advanced SystemCare, since the last time (and installed CCleaner in its place), but I doubt that this improvement has anything to do with it.
