thats the problem we facing nw , we can uninstall the package but not able to remove from image.

i think all those packages go and hide in winsxs making it hard to remove

actally i dunno how the servicing stack works,

from whre it extracts the package files and installs during a CBS?

i couldnt find any cabs related to the packages in a wim

from wer they trun up during sbs-ing ?

hi all,

i try to slim down win2008 std. server

using vlite v1.2b

for now i reached this one (gives me an 716mb iso) with areo theme working:

bild3ah4.jpg

but, there are about 19 hidden components.

how can I get access to them?

the command 'extreme' like this:

"D:\Tools\vLite\vlite.exe" -extreme

i try'd it via shortcut and cmd.

will not change anything.

@derhans

the hidden componets might due to compatibility issues (if u click halo2 in compatibility tab, secondary logon goes hidden and so on for other components, chek them individually)

@shahed26

its not bcoz of file access issue, but how to locate the stuff in the wim

do u know were the "Windows-IIS-Webserver-Addon2-Package" files reside in the wim ?

(der r more of that sort of componets)

ofcoz once u know the files and its location it dey can be removed with or without unlocker

(am too a core user of unlocker)

@aviv00

found a clue:

the just above Packages in the software hive is PackageDetect

i think this determines the package dependencies

its subkey Microsoft-Windows-Foundation-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~0.0.0.0

has all the package dependencies

may be removing the package name from der allows removing of the packages.

most of them have a value 3 and few of them have value 4 (REG_DWORD)

i didn't got enough time to verify this.

plz check it.

This is an excellent resource -- thanks for taking the time to research this and put it together. I got Server 2008 down to a ~400MB ISO and ~1GB install with WAIK and vLite, and I'm able to use Desktop Experience (I only preserved Windows Photo Gallery as it's needed for Picasa) and Wireless LAN support. Also kept .NET.

lol im noob like u

i success to do that with lots of testing[about 2 weeks] and didn't fully understand what im doing

Ok

as u understand i done it with testing so cant ensure its will go easily :)

Guide How to Remove Packages with WAIK [ Could be use on Vista as well ]

use the original install.wim

hive in to regedit.exe the software [in system32\config\]

export to the packages

with notpade replace

"Visibility"=dword:00000002

to

"Visibility"=dword:00000001

save it and import it back to regedit.exe [ click it twice, u should take owner and full access first]

remove the Owners dirs of all the packages [ save it from time to time so u wont get mistake and need to go back]

save the hive with unhive it [ save the wim changes]

use Windows SIM [ WAIK] to make the new clg file

start to make answer file to remove those packages u dont need [edit at 12.6: use <package action="remove" permanence="permanent">]

if u get error like 1023 or 1623 i dont remember u should rebulid the image with vlite [or start remove comps with it and rebulid, do that after u remove all the possable]

TIPS:

server 32bit have 201 packages i success to remove till 74 packages left after remove comps with vlite

those others that get those error i was talking before was able to remove now [ duno why ]

u dont need to remove the lang pack of any package if u remove the main the lang pack of it should go too

if u remove the server lang pack the while the install u will get error

Go extreme with vlite & Server

if u want to remove winsxs as well and still have the aero

remove the pending.xml in winsxs dir [install.wim]

tell me about ur exp. with it :)

GL man

I can't do "take owner and full access"

My OS is Vista, any help?

Thank you so much aviv00 ! 716 MB of server 2008 set up & it took only 2.5 gb of hdd space (without paging file and hibernate).

I was surprised to see performance improvement...it took only 7 mins to install SQL 2005 Developer Edition. On vista and xp it takes approx 15 - 20 mins :thumbup

Special thanks to nuhi for nLite and vLite :)

here a link to my updated ini

hope u find it useful

http://www.2shared.com/file/4294906/f6afd1a3/presets.html

about the desktop exper and iis use waik to pre install them

Could you make an updated .ini that gives you the slimmest possible image without disrupting the 'add/remove' function?

This way people can tailor their own config by deselecting whatever needs to remain.

i think saving "help" and winsxs is enuf for saving the add/remove feather

try run on vmware or any other app for that and test it im not sure

but why do that while u have waik to pre install what u like

u could then make iso much less and the install size much smaller

cos then u delete the backups files = like 500mb [ just by pre install it]

and the backup files to feathers = like 300mb or even more to install size [ with winsxs removal using vlite ]

its the best way

but 2.5giga is not small enuf for u ? why?
