Kurt_Aust
Are you sure that applies to XP x64 as well? (or even to all installations of 32-bit XP)I hadn't heard of it before and considering that XP x64 is really Server 2003 x64 with the server extensions stripped out, it may not be a problem if it only affects the NT 5.1 codebase (XP x64 is NT 5.2). viggen66
Kurt_Aust, I always run the net_startup_fix on every XP instalattion it compiles the modules and the problem is gone, I need to rebuid my iso with the previous fixes I posted earlier, moreover I have just found a new tool, which I think is most important, namely RunasSpc, this overcomes the problem of running applications that require admins rights on limited accounts without everybody knowing the admin password, as I always use a limited account to enhance security, this wonderful tool lets me run, some of the programs with admins rights without any problem. You may say just right click and put run as the problem is gone, but not every program lets you do that, and this encrypts the runas so is secure for anyone, besides being freeware.http://www.robotronic.de/runasspcEn.html Edited April 27, 2013 by viggen66

The latest application to fall is Foxit reader, joining Avast anti-virus and Comodo firewall. That's bad enough but now Microsoft's download pages are "Modern UI" style, hiding such basic information as the name of the file you are about to download and (more importantly for me) sometimes dispensing with the links to the associated security bulletins. MediaFire has also gone the Metro route, displaying in a horrible blurry grey font that gives me eye-strain.[/Rant]

ASP.NET Compatibility UpdateA tad late again this month, this time for reasons similar to those that hit 5eraph, as I had a hard drive die on my computer the day before patch Tuesday just when I was about to do the monthly offsite backup AND I had to rebuild my parents PC (which strangely took priority over updating this topic)..Net 4.0 - currently has 13 updates totalling 215MB for a base installer that only weighs in at 48MB? Me thinks it's well past time for an updated base installer to be released.

I'll assume you want a fully updated base install disk WITHOUT a CD key so you can use it on multiple computers (note, I only have OEM copies of XP x64 so can't guarantee results on other versions, it shouldn't make a difference though). In that case just don't enter the key in nLite, you can still choose fully automated install mode, the installer will stop when it gets to that point and ask you for the key.nLite does not have the capability to integrate WMP11 in and of itself, it does apparently have the ability to call the WMP11 slipstreamer, but as I haven't used that ability I don't support it.If you're having trouble the simplest option is to use 5eraph's update packs (with the WMP11 slipstreamer, and DirectX & .Net at \RunOnce), with no addons, in that case you only need to autologon once and shouldn't copy Run2_Xp-64.bat to your new install disk. Opera version 12.xx rather than 15.xx is supported as v15 doesn't support silent install and doesn't have the killer feature of Turbo mode. Added UltraDefrag and set it to do a boot-time defrag before Run2_XP-64.bat if installed. Also had to break the main post into two parts as the "upgraded" forum software spits the dummy on the previous version. tordenflesk
Any fool-proof way of installing this from USB? I've tried WinNTSetup(doesn't copy all files, BSOD when loading AHCI-drivers), WinSetupFromUSB(Doesn't log in automatically if I've set a password in nLite, ~50% of the install is missing if I install without password).I've also tried a few manual ways of doing it involving firadisk etc. these were just as catastrophic. Why is X64 being so difficult? Would I have to use these tools from a X64 OS? That would be a bit of a "chicken and the egg" for me. My installs work just fine in VirtualBox after quite a bit of testing.
Kurt_Aust
I've never tried installing from USB myself, you could try Rufus (which implies it supports XP x64) System Requirements:Windows XP or later. 32 or 64 bit doesn't matter.Or possibly YUMI (which has specific install instructions)The Windows XP Installation from USB option currently works by booting directly from your XP ISO, hence the YUMI menu entry is created under "Directly Bootable ISOs". In order for the Windows XP installation to succeed, you must perform the following steps;1.) To begin an install, select (Stage 1)2.) Upon first reboot, you must select (Stage 2)3.) Finally, after (Stage 2) is complete – upon the second reboot, select (Stage 3) to boot the drive where you installed Windows XP. If this option fails, simply remove the USB and reboot! tordenflesk
Rufus can run on a 64-bit OS, but it appears to be unable to read the ISO:Yumi fails to boot the ISO resulting in a Grub4Dos prompt:I have tried several USB-sticks.
Kurt_Aust
Sorry, but it may well be that the various USB installers don't support XP x64. I am under the impression that it took quite a lot of work to create stable USB installers for 32-bit XP and hence the lack of 64-bit support, while unfortunate, is not really all that surprising. tordenflesk
I've tried that,as well as WinToFlash and a couple others.I've now pretty much admited defeat and decided to borrow the DVDRW-drive from another machine. It will be my first time using optical media to install an OS in 3+ years. I was kind of hoping to include this install on my main "install every OS, fix every issue"-USB-stick of awesome. Curses! jaclaz
Defeat (or giving up) is NEVER an option .All automated tools (for obvious reasons) tend to work alright with an "original", not modified source. The "fully up to date XP x64 DVD" is AFAICU a (nice) very modified source, no particular surprise that a "standard" tool cannot work properly with a "non-standard" source. It is very possible that a few changes are needed (and are enough) in order to use one of those tools, but XP 64 is (no offence whatever intended ) a "not-so-common" OS and while I am sure that Ilko or JFX or Steve6375 (to name a few of those that are around here) would be happy to help, they would need cooperation for testing from someone with a 64 XP (standard) and a 64 XP ("fully up to date").If you are game, I am pretty sure that if you post a request here:http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/157-install-windows-from-usb/and be a diligent party in the testing some of the good guys would help you.BTW, there is at least one report that the "usual" method of Firadisk or Winvblock (of course the 64 bit version) do work for installing:http://reboot.pro/topic/9830-universal-hdd-image-files-for-xp-and-windows-7/page-36#entry163260and Sardu is said to be compatible with XP64:http://reboot.pro/topic/14768-new-release-of-sardu-204-beta-16/jaclaz Edited July 20, 2013 by jaclaz
