Thanks for the quick response.

2) When I was integrating SP2 using nlite, I got a warning dialog about existing hotfixes that needed to be removed before applying the service pack. Is this normal? My XP x64 source was copied directly from a factory pressed CD. Any hotfixes present must have been put there by Microsoft.

No it is not normal, are you sure that your CD isn't SP2 already? Check the root directory of the CD, if it has WIN51AP.SP2 then the disk is Service Pack 2.

The volume label on the CD is "AX2PXFPP_EN"

The root of the CD only has "WIN51" and "WIN51AP"

The \AMD64\SVCPACK directory contains 4 files...

BRANCHES.INF
HFINT.DAT
KB911164.CAT
KB911164.EXE

In this thread...
http://www.msfn.org/...ws-xp-sp2c-oem/
...A user says this about KB911164...

"That's a non-public hotfix for IE6 which updates the way plug-ins are loaded ("Click here to activate this control") and maybe other things. Just remove it and slipstream the latest cumulative update, which supersedes it."

Strange, my SP1 disk (which is really RtM, XP x64 and Server 2003 x64 were released when Server 2003 32-bit had already received SP1) has a volume label of ARMPXOEM_EN

Also there is no SVCpack directory on a default SP1 (or SP2) disk, did you buy an OEM disk yourself (in a plastic DVD style case) or was it supplied with your computer?

This page lists the known Windows XP CD labels:
http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=342

According to the page "AX2PXFPP_EN" is the Retail version of Windows XP Professional x64, without SP2.
"ARMPXOEM_EN" is the OEM version.

@krick:
It seems that your disc is slipstreamed by someone else. The original disc shouldn't have the \AMD64\SVCPACK directory.

One of my co-workers picked it up in his college bookstore many years ago, but never got around to installing it. He gave it to me after I mentioned in passing that I was looking for a copy of XP x64 but couldn't find one.

The part number on the CD is E85-03210.
The printing on the disc says...

June 2006
Systems
Student Media / Work At Home Media

I found more information posted in 2007 about KB911164 in a thread about HFSLIP...

http://www.msfn.org/...an-source-flag/

Quote

The newer SP2 disks install a non-public IE6 update from SVCPACK. The existence of the SVCPACK folder causes HFSLIP to trigger the warning.

The reason I haven't come up with a solution for that yet is because, if that update is not installed (which happens after running HFSLIP) and you don't include the latest cumulative update for IE6, you get tons of errors reported in setuperr.log. So I don't want to simply ignore the existence of the SVCPACK folder as a whole. Instead, the warning message needs to be different.

I guess you may as well give it a try as is, if Microsoft has done their job right the Service Pack should be able to correctly remove those hotfixes.

I'm seeing something strange and I think the WMP11 slipstream might be the cause.

I have a CD image that I made by slipstreaming SP2, and then using the WMP11 slipstreamer to integrate WMP11. No other changes. This installs fine.

However, if I take the same image, and add 5eraph's XP Pro x64 post SP2 update pack and Internet Explorer 8 AddOn, then I get a bunch (6) errors during the install about unsigned drivers. The error log is attached. I had to change the extension because it wouldn't let me attach a ".log" file.

Just to to be sure, I also made an image with SP2 and 5eraph's XP Pro x64 post SP2 update pack. No WMP11, and no IE8. This also installed fine.

When I slipstreamed WMP11 using the tool, I have no idea what the different options are so I chose the "Tweaked" wmp11 output because that's what you chose in your screenshot. I've attached a screenshot of the settings I chose.

Any thoughts?

That's normal behaviour or at least it happens on my system as well, don't worry about it.

As far as I can tell it causes no problems on a running system or at least I haven't heard of any.

If you're concerned you can always use the WMP11 silent install option.

They're not drivers. They're modified WMP11 files. They become unsigned when the WMP11 Slipstreamer modifies them for the Tweaked option. If you don't want the errors then choose the "Vanilla (same as original installer with WGA)" option. ;)

Thanks. It's working as expected now.

My next question is about the .Net groups. I want to be sure about what you mean by "cumulative".

Given the three groups, A, B, and C below...

If I want to include .NET 3.5, do I need all the files from group A and group B, or just the ones from group B.

Similarly, if I want to include .NET 4.0, do I need the files from groups A, B and C, or just the ones from group C.

cu·mu·la·tive [kyoo-myuh-luh-tiv, -ley-tiv] adjective
1. increasing or growing by accumulation or successive additions: the cumulative effect of one rejection after another.
2. formed by or resulting from accumulation or the addition of successive parts or elements.
3. of or pertaining to interest or dividends that, if not paid when due, become a prior claim for payment in the future: cumulative preferred stocks.

So your options are nothing or A or A+B or A+B+C

Thanks. That answers my question.

However, what you're actually describing is "incremental". As in...

"A service pack can be incremental, which means it only contains the updates that were not present in the previous service packs or, it can be cumulative, which means it includes the contents of all its predecessors."

For example, if dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe was cumulative, it would contain .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.5.

XP Service pack 2 is cumulative. If I want to slipstream SP2, I don't need to slipstream SP1 first.

It would be better if they use simpler language like "You also need the .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.5 updates above."
avoiding the term "incremental" or "cumulative".

By the way, .NET 3.5 does include .NET 3.0 and .NET 2.0, so you can call it cumulative. But .NET 4.0 is not, and I personally avoid using .NET 4.0 apps.

Thanks Explorer09, someone double checking is always helpful, especially on things that don't show up on the monthly security bulletin such as "Note: 2661254 + 2728973 (rvkroots.exe) replaces 2718704. 2661254 is not a high-priority update AFAIK."

I've decided from now on to leave in the batch files all my hardware specific driver commands but comment them all out as well as some other non-freeware applications I install.

September updates

Deletion:
RunOnce\WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB2695962-x64-ENU.exe

Replace:
# . RunOnce\install_flash_player_11_active_x.exe .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9,575,112 . Updated 21 August

Addition:
@ . . . RunOnce\WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB2736233-x64-ENU.exe . 685,592 . ActiveX Kill-Bits Cumulative

Obviously one of those almost mythical months with no Microsoft security updates (the ActiveX Kill-Bits target Cisco software). On the supported application front, the batch files will now remove AVG security toolbar (for I.E.) and the obsolete versions of the Visual C++ runtimes installed by QuickTime Alternative Lite and Avast Anti-Virus.

The recommended method for installing Microsoft Office 2007 has been changed with instructions and download links in the file Misc\Office2007.html (but the old method will still work). Also the "Small Business" version is now supported along with the previously supported "Home and Student", however support for other versions will require the help of you dear reader.

Critical Internet Explorer update

Deletion:
Hotfix\904-IE8-WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB2722913-x64-ENU.exe

Replace:
# . RunOnce\install_flash_player_11_active_x.exe .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9,573,296 . Updated 18 September

Addition:
# . Hotfix\904-IE8-WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB2744842-x64-ENU.exe 43,867,192 . MS12-063 - Cumulative Security Update

Added support for Microsoft's Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit with all EMET tested applications being protected (All.xml applied) and the Oracle VirtualBox extension pack (but it won't show as installed until you create your first VM).

Speaking of VirtualBox, I got an email stating that my long running problems had finally been fixed with 4.1.22 and to reopen the bug ticket if I was still having problems. Having tried 4.1.20 and having it still hang all the time I didn't hold out much hope but 4.1.22 seems OK. I was going to report that the problem had been fixed but now Oracle won't let me login to my account, oh well.

None the less I'll be sticking with 3.0.14 as they started Vista-fying it with the 3.1.x series, by which I mean the settings I change when doing testing are 2 clicks away in VirtualBox 3.0.14 but 5 clicks away in later versions.

Explorer09, yep, had the VM running as I headed out the door this morning.

EDIT: I'd advise caution before installing Microsoft's EMET as 7-Zip and Skype didn't work for me after installing EMET. I did a survey of all the EMET supported applications in the guide and found that WinRAR and Internet Explorer (64-bit only, 32-bit OK) didn't work either. I've added commands to resolve these issues but can't say with any confidence that there won't be others.

It is not critical to replace KB2731847 & KB2705219 as only the digital certificate changed and a system will still run correctly (for now) with the older versions, however it could be an issue in the future.
