I'm back online with a fresh install (w98SE+++updates) and... wow! Internet surfing is much faster than before!

So that's how you got rid of all that spyware that was hogging your connection.
Joke aside, the internet in general seems faster since some days here as well and I haven't reinstalled or tweaked anything.

No, my comp is realy faster on the internet, on other websites now.
I did many repairs andupdates with the old install, but it's the 1st time I completely erased my HD since 2004.
I certainly had something messing up in the system.

Ben,
What it has to do with interent browsing? My cache was even not on the C: drive + I defragged frequently.

Internet browsing makes use of the HDD for the cache and history.
Last vacation I took care of my uncle's PC. It was really slow browsing the Internet. He still has dial-up, but I don't remember it being this slow. After I had defragmented his HDD (file parts all over the place!), Internet browsing suddenly became MUCH faster.
So I'm not making stuff up.
