hello,
i tried searching for a similar problem to mine before i started this. here is my problem:
i have a new compaq f572us laptop. it came with vista. i wiped vista and tried to install win2000.
i ran into a problem about bios acpi incompatibility and was able to install by pressing f7, bypassing acpi and using standard pc hal.
all drivers installed except sound and modem: conexant hd audio and hdaudio soft data fax modem with smartcp. i learned that i needed
uaa - universal audio architecture- to install audio. installed uaa; this appeared to work as i can see it in system devices. but audio still
and modem still does not install.
i believe the problem is the hal layer. if i can get this to install with hal acpi then i believe the drivers would install as well.
the motherboard is by quanta - oem manufacturer. i believe it is the c30d board. there is limited information about this board.
i installed xp without problems. xp recognizes the board as acpi.
i read that acpi compatibility is determined in txtsetup.sif. is there a way to modify this file to install win2000 as acpi?
any suggestions would be very helpful. oh, the reason i want win2000 rather than winxp ( i do have valid licenses for both ) is i do not like activation.
also, i tend to reformat and reinstall every 6-8 months and would rather not deal with activiation everytime. it's a small hassle but still
it feels like such a big hassle to me.
thanks in advance.

Two long shots:
1) You write you can't install W2000 with acpi hal. Did you already try to exchange the kernel/hal after you completed installation?
2) It is possible to backup the activation, so you won't have to reactivate when you reinstall. The first time activation is still needed, however.

#1: yes. did install win2000 with standard pc hal. tried to exchange/upgrade hal to acpi. followed microsoft's instructions.
ran win2000 install disc under current win2000. all that did was bring me back to initial install screen where i picked acpi hal and
ran into same error message: bios incompatible with acpi press f7. then i end up just reinstalling win2000 with standard pc hal again.
so that didn't work
#2:
i read that you can back up the activation for winxp. haven't tried it yet. may end up doing that if i can't get win200 to install.
still would rather have win2000; just less bloated than winxp. my standard win2000 install is about 1.5 gb. winxp is almost double that with sp2.
would it work if i used the textsetup.sif from the winxp disc for the win2000 install? does winxp even have textsetup.sif? haven't really looked.
was hoping someone here maybe had run into a similar situation and could help with the install.

just an update:
replaced the win2000 txtsetup.sif that dealt with acpi (acpienable, bios oem, etc) with the one
from winxp.
still didn't work. got the same error message: motherboard is acpi incompatible.
tried contacting the motherboard manufacturer-- never got a reply.
any suggestions?

Sometime this helps: search for kb888111.
PS And the hotfix is usually included in Realtec drivers

The problem may be in wrong drivers (I have a similar problem with Toshiba Satellite L401 - comes with Vista and no W2k or XP drivers
If you want it, you may also try to change HAL: open folder WINDOWS\INF (it's hidden!), find and delete HAL.PNF (NOT HAL.INF but HAL.PNF!!!). ONLY after that try changing Computer type in Device manager (I think you know how to do it?).
Or why not reinstalling it and trying it again?
