LAST - $$$$ - Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 6.0 --- The authors sold themselves out to Sony. Hardly obtainble legally.
LAST - FREE - FileZilla Server 0.9.12c --- http://downloads.sourceforge.net/filezilla...ver-0.9.12c.exe

There is a higher version number of FileZilla installing on Win98. But it does not save its settings properly, and effectively does not work. FileZilla authors wouldn't say which version can be used on Win98 because of "security issues" in older builds.

The last version of FileZilla for 98/ME is 2.2.22. The changelog for the version released after this stated that 98/ME support had been dropped.

As for other FTP clients, WINSCP is still supported (current version is 4.06):

There are two parts in FileZilla, the "server" and the "client".

This is for desktop enhancement.

- Emi Clock 5.0.2 (A cute desktop clock):
http://www003.upp.so...ne.jp/motosoft/

- Aurora, Mystify, Ribbons, and Bubbles screensaver:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhan...ted-to-XP.shtml

Among the four screensavers, I like Bubbles the best. I have it on both XP and 98. It runs very nice.

LAST - FREE - ClrMamePro 3.109a - Mame Data Manager --- http://www.mamechann...rt/cmp3109a.zip
...

Any MAME fans out there using Windows 9x may have noticed that the latest ClrMamePro DAT format has been updated.
Also Generic XML format DATs have been added.
The problem is that these updated formats are not compatible with this last 9x compatible ClrMamePro...
Any DATs that do not work will need converting.

Use Logiqx's DatUtil (current version 2.35 works) from http://www.logiqx.com/Tools/DatUtil/ to convert newer DATs to a usable format for us 9x'ers.

Use the following command line, replacing [your dat file] with the file name of the DAT in question:

datutil -k [your dat file]

This will output a datutil.dat file (-k converts all information - rename this output file) that will work under ClrMamePro 3.109a.

Happy emulating 9x'ers! B)

NEW STUFF: Avast! 4.8 has been released - as usual, it supports every version of Windows from 95 onwards and includes some new protection features! :)

Maybe I am mistaking but Winpatrol is not on the list. This program which can be downloaded from http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html will protect from different threats all Windows from Windows 95 until Vista

Here's another one for the list:

File Sharing and File Downloaders
ONGD - FREE - µTorrent 1.7.7 build 8179 --- http://download.utor....7/utorrent.exe

A great little app.

I'm not sure why it doesn't work well for you, Fhub. I'm using Winpatrol 14.0.2007 without any problems. Actually, when I first installed it, my computer was restarted twice without a warning message. How annoying! But after that it has run fine till now.

Not the Last Versions, but these AV Scanners are the latest versions, free, 4-5 star rated, and run on Win 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/Vista.
Virus Scanners
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic 7.06.00.268
http://www.download.com/Avira-AntiVir-Pers...ml?tag=lst-0-10

Does the Avira still work on 98? I ask because it does not show 98 on the system requirements on their website when you click on that link.

The version now is 7.06.00.270, so does anyone know if this version will work, install, and update on 98 S.E?

Hello:

I asked on the AntiVir anti-virus forum, and they stated that they no longer support Win 98/ME. I think that they dropped support in mid-2007.

AVG has released a new v8.0 of it's commercial anti-virus and it no longer supports Win 98/ME. The AVG Free Edition v7.5 is still available, and if AVG follows their past pattern, a Free Edition of v8.0 will follow in a few to several months. AVG has explicitly stated that: "* Some older operating systems such as Microsoft Windows ME, Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 98 will only be supported until August 2008 as a minimum."
See: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-...s/frt/0#details .

Avast! has just released v4.8 of their anti-virus, including the free home edition. v4.8 still supports "more Windows versions (from Windows 95 to Vista 64 Bit) than any other anti-malware product."
See: http://www.avast.com...ast_4_home.html . In their forum, they stated that the new v5.0 that is under development will continue to support Win 98/ME, although not all features will be supported on Win 98/ME (but that is the case, currently).

So it looks like Avast! Home will be the only remaining full-featured freeware anti-virus package to support Win 98/ME. Fortunately, it has gotten some very favorable reviews.

CNet Download.com rated the new Avast! Home v4.8 as 5 out of 5 stars.
See: http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition....html?tag=lst-1 .

And PC Mag has an on-line review of the new v4.8 of Avast! Home edition, rating it as 4 out of 5 stars - or "very good."
See: http://www.pcmag.com...,2282699,00.asp .

For a commercial product, BitDefender new v2008 requires Win2K, XP, or Vista. But they are still offering their previous version, v10, which supports Win 98/ME. See: http://www.bitdefender.com/site/view/Produ...in98-Me-NT.html .
And the BitDefender Free Edition is still available and supports Win 98/ME, but it lacks an on-access, real-time scanner and is an on-demand scanner product only.

Finally, I wanted to mention that the Outpost Firewall Free edition supports Win 98/ME.
See: http://www.agnitum.c...ee/download.php .

Cheers,
O.J.
