Why don't you give K-Meleon a shot. I went to this browser last Oct and haven't been sorry. It is said by many to be the fastest browser on the internet, not sure about that, but it's up there (Google: K-Meleon fastest browser). Good active friendly forum for help and you can customize K-Meleon to what you like ... the Klassic skin will make it look a little like IE6 ... or not ... there are several skins in the download and more that others have made. The current version is 1.54 ... they are working on a newer version 1.6 (preBETA Stage) ... it works with the new Gekco engine v1.9 I think ... not suppose to work with Windows 98SE but with the new KernelEx (and help from the forum) I was able to get the new browser working with Win 98SE just over a week ago ... this is all good for us Win 98SE holdouts. Go into the General forum and you will see a question posted about getting Win 98SE to work with the new K-Meleon browser currently in development. Nothing wrong with the current version 1.5.4 ... super fast and look at all the Extensions that you can add ... it will take some time to read and get things figured out ... settings and all, but not too much time ... I got my v1.5.4 running perfect now and almost 100% with the new 1.6 preBeta. I am very satisfied with this browser and the ability to make it exactly like I want it.

For me there's only one noticeable problem, which is that there is no flashing cursor within input boxes (such as the one I'm typing in now) to mark your place within text.

FWIW

This problem does not seem to affect 98SE, it only shows up when Opera 10.50+ versions are installed on 98SE2ME or ME itself.
The only workaround I know for this is to left click on the box you need to fill and hit 'Insert' button on the keyboard. This will get you a rather bold flashing line in place of the normal line, which is less than perfect but useable.

Thanks for the fix I have the same problem only with 98SE2ME.
Could not figure it out until now.

Thanks, does it easily import all bookmarks? and can it be un-installed easy if I don't like it for any reason without causing problems to my current Firefox.

Also I take it that it works without KernelEx being installed too?

It imported my Firefox bookmarks automatically, I believe. At least, they are there, and I don't recall importing them myself. Otherwise, go: Menu > Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks, and from the Manage Bookmarks pane, choose File > Import Firefox Bookmarks.

Opera uninstalls very easily and painlessly. In my experience it plays nicely with other installed apps.

Yep, works without KernelEx.

Ah, thanks for this. Indeed I am a 98SE2ME user. Hmmm. Wonder if it has to do with the ME version of msimg32.dll? When installing Opera on 98 SE, does it still complain about requiring a later version of msimg32.dll?

Don't know if any1 posted this here before...

* Nomand.NET is a free(ware) file manager clone with lots of features:
http://www.nomad-net.info/
Requires .NET Framework 2.0 or newer:
http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#NFR
Compatible with Windows 98/98SE/ME out of the box.
Download here [stable RC]:
http://www.nomad-net.info/downloads
Screen shot:
http://images.betane...205541909-1.png
Includes 7-zip (free GPL) compression/decompression interface.

* If any1 needs the last 95/98/ME compatible versions of FreeCommander [free(ware)], here they are:
http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ENH
This tool has a unique feature: can compare 2 drives/partitions/directories side-by-side and synchronize them with minimum of mouse clicks.
And its copy function is very fast [has its own cache algorithm] which is noticeable especially with very large files/folders, faster than Windows Explorer and similar tools based on shell32.dll APIs.

* CRC/MD5/SHA file (PE) checksum tools that work with 9x OSes [free(ware)]:
http://www.mdgx.com/xptoy.htm#CRC
The ones I'm refering to [because they work with 95/98/ME] are: FCIV.EXE, CRC.EXE, WinCRC + FileRepair.
[thank you dencorso for discovering some of these tools!]

MDGx ... as usual, thanks for the info and links. I thought I had the last FreeCommander version for Win 98SE (2008) but I see you have a version 2009.o2a ... also found a few other Windows Explorer replacements to try. Don't know how you do it and still have a life ... you are the best. May you live forever in good health.

Added all the above (and moved the section) here:

since they're not just a few NTx tools anymore.

Enjoy.

Have you, or anyone else, got the FTP "drive" to work on Win98? Every time I tried it just went silent on me.

I now use Q-Dir (www.softwareok.com), and it is USB portable. The FTP is Windoze's, but it does work.

North of Watford ... I didn't have much luck with the FreeCommander 2009 version ... went back to the 2008 version. It seem to freeze up on my computer and I had to reboot. I didn't try anything with KernelEx, just decided to go back to FreeCommander 2008, it worked OK on my 98SE notebooks. I didn't do anything yet with the FTP drive. I will check out Q-Dir, never heard of it. thanks. ... maybe someone else will be of more help.

This has baffled me for ages, at present I have the following Java Platform

Standard Edition 6
Version 6 Update 6
(build 1.6.0_06-b02)

I have some questions, I believe there is an update 20 and 21, they say that 20 has the bug fixes, I have tried under windows 98 to install both but nothing happens when I click on install, and if I download the exe files a message appears about a missing shell something or other, so is there a way to download this under 98 without the need for KernelEx?

Also I notice that I have some updates to the version 5 showing under the add/remove program list, do they need to be there and can they be removed.

I use Firefox 2

On their site they don't mention Windows 98 (nor Win ME) as a compatible OS. Are you running an older version perhaps, or are you confirming the current version runs fine on 98 SE - that would be great !

It appears WinRAR will no longer support Windows 9X.

From RARLAB main page:

Last updated: 15 November 2010

* We stopped the development and support of Pocket RAR and RAR version for MS DOS. Also now the minimum required Windows version for WinRAR is Windows 2000. You can find old versions of RAR/DOS, Pocket RAR and WinRAR for older Windows here.

The linked page lists WinRAR 3.93 as the last version for Windows 9X, NT4, and DOS.

Obsolete RAR versions

Here you can find outdated RAR versions for operating systems and platforms, which we do not develop for and support anymore.
Last version of English WinRAR with Windows 98 and Windows NT 4 support.
Last version of English Pocket RAR for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile versions up to 6.5.
Last version of RAR for MS DOS.

WinRAR x86 (32 bit) 3.93 Graphic and command line Trial 1332 KB
RAR 3.93 for Pocket PC Graphic only Free 261 KB
RAR 3.93 for MS DOS <info> Command line only Trial 656 KB

Will this lack of support cause problems opening rar files made with newer versions and opening them with older versions like for instance Winrar3.30?

I am grateful to KernelEx enabling me to have various programs I would not normally be able to have on windows 98.

I suppose if new file formats are introduced older versions of Winrar may not be able to open them.

I've seen that message too.
Because I'm owner of a legal copy of it, of course I'm not pleased with that fact.

But I've made a small test: I've installed beta version of WinRar 4.0 and I don't have any problem at this moment - as I presume just because of presence of KernelEx.

The last version of WinImage to work under Win9x is apparently v8.1. The currently latest version v8.50 of 26-Oct-2010 does not list Win9x anymore http://www.winimage.com/download.htm

Don't know if any1 already posted this here, so I'm gonna do it (again?)... ;)

File comparison tools display the differences (eventually highlighted in different colors) of the contents of 2 files side-by-side [binary, text, ASCII, Unicode, UTF etc] for all 9x OSes (free):

* MS WinDiff [rather primitive] found on your Win98/98SE/ME install CD-ROM and on MS ftp server (English, free):
- WINDIFF.EXE
- GUTILS.DLL (required!)
- WINDIFF.HLP
All 3 files above must reside inside the same folder.

* WinMerge [way better features, probably the best of its kind for the money ;-)] (free GPL).
