Why don't you give K-Meleon a shot. I went to this browser last Oct and haven't been sorry. It is said by many to be the fastest browser on the internet, not sure about that, but it's up there (Google: K-Meleon fastest browser). Good active friendly forum for help and you can customize K-Meleon to what you like ... the Klassic skin will make it look a little like IE6 ... or not ... there are several skins in the download and more that others have made. The current version is 1.54 ... they are working on a newer version 1.6 (preBETA Stage) ... it works with the new Gekco engine v1.9 I think ... not suppose to work with Windows 98SE but with the new KernelEx (and help from the forum) I was able to get the new browser working with Win 98SE just over a week ago ... this is all good for us Win 98SE holdouts. Go into the General forum and you will see a question posted about getting Win 98SE to work with the new K-Meleon browser currently in development. Nothing wrong with the current version 1.5.4 ... super fast and look at all the Extensions that you can add ... it will take some time to read and get things figured out ... settings and all, but not too much time ... I got my v1.5.4 running perfect now and almost 100% with the new 1.6 preBeta. I am very satisfied with this browser and the ability to make it exactly like I want it.

This problem does not seem to affect 98SE, it only shows up when Opera 10.50+ versions are installed on 98SE2ME or ME itself.
The only workaround I know for this is to left click on the box you need to fill and hit 'Insert' button on the keyboard. This will get you a rather bold flashing line in place of the normal line, which is less than perfect but useable.

It imported my Firefox bookmarks automatically, I believe. At least, they are there, and I don't recall importing them myself. Otherwise, go: Menu > Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks, and from the Manage Bookmarks pane, choose File > Import Firefox Bookmarks.

Opera uninstalls very easily and painlessly. In my experience it plays nicely with other installed apps.

Yep, works without KernelEx.

Ah, thanks for this. Indeed I am a 98SE2ME user. Hmmm. Wonder if it has to do with the ME version of msimg32.dll? When installing Opera on 98 SE, does it still complain about requiring a later version of msimg32.dll?

Have you, or anyone else, got the FTP "drive" to work on Win98? Every time I tried it just went silent on me.

I now use Q-Dir (www.softwareok.com), and it is USB portable. The FTP is Windoze's, but it does work.

North of Watford ... I didn't have much luck with the FreeCommander 2009 version ... went back to the 2008 version. It seem to freeze up on my computer and I had to reboot. I didn't try anything with KernelEx, just decided to go back to FreeCommander 2008, it worked OK on my 98SE notebooks. I didn't do anything yet with the FTP drive. I will check out Q-Dir, never heard of it. thanks. ... maybe someone else will be of more help.

This has baffled me for ages, at present I have the following Java Platform

I have some questions, I believe there is an update 20 and 21, they say that 20 has the bug fixes, I have tried under windows 98 to install both but nothing happens when I click on install, and if I download the exe files a message appears about a missing shell something or other, so is there a way to download this under 98 without the need for KernelEx?

Also I notice that I have some updates to the version 5 showing under the add/remove program list, do they need to be there and can they be removed.

Will this lack of support cause problems opening rar files made with newer versions and opening them with older versions like for instance Winrar3.30?

I am grateful to KernelEx enabling me to have various programs I would not normally be able to have on windows 98.

I suppose if new file formats are introduced older versions of Winrar may not be able to open them.

Because I'm owner of a legal copy of it, of course I'm not pleased with that fact.

But I've made a small test: I've installed beta version of WinRar 4.0 and I don't have any problem at this moment - as I presume just because of presence of KernelEx.

File comparison tools display the differences (eventually highlighted in different colors) of the contents of 2 files side-by-side [binary, text, ASCII, Unicode, UTF etc] for all 9x OSes (free):

* MS WinDiff [rather primitive] found on your Win98/98SE/ME install CD-ROM and on MS ftp server (English, free):
- WINDIFF.EXE
- GUTILS.DLL (required!)
- WINDIFF.HLP
All 3 files above must reside inside the same folder.

* WinMerge [way better features, probably the best of its kind for the money ;-)] (free GPL).
