Another well known app:

Windows Utilities
ONGD - FREE - Dependency Walker --- http://www.dependencywalker.com/

Hey Drugwash,
I think AnVir Task Manager Free is a great tool. The 'Pro' features I don't really need anyway.
I do not start it with Windows and only run it when I need to check out what's going on behind the scenes!
The reason for it's resource and system requirements is because it is a powerful utility.
Sure, their are smaller TMs for older systems too.

Could you perform a feature comparison between AnVir Task Manager Free and Codestudd Starter, and point out the differences - at least the ones that matter?

I found the former to be very slow on my 400MHz Pentium II (probably because of the skin, for one), while the latter is extremely easy on the system. And seeing that soporific already grabbed the former and tossed it in Auto-Updater, if I wanted to update Win98SE on my testing 166MHz Pentium I, I'd certainly wanna have at hand a tool that'd actually work on such system.

Okay, nice tool. Simple but nice.

Windows Utilities
ONGD - FREE - CodeStuff Starter --- http://codestuff.tri...ts_starter.html

Drugwash, when I've got time I'll compare the two...
Always good to have constructive input and ideas.

Just a followup / update.

The link provided for FFDSHOW points to a discontinued branch of it's development. Milan stopped development of it long ago it seems (back in '04). Continued development based on Milan's FFDSHOW branch can be found at the following URL:

http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/

Also to add:
http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/
Last version of Haali's Media Splitter that works on win9x was on 03-06-2007 and can be found at http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_so....cfm/03_06_2007

It is used for the opening and support of MKV video/audio containers.

A few days ago I have tried to install ffdshow-rev1803_20080120.zip and ffdshow-rev1805_20080122.zip (MMX version) and they both threw an error stating 'The setup files are corrupted...". I downloaded again from the mirror provided by free-codecs.com and still the same error. However, an older build I had around (ffdshow_beta4a_rev1723_20071224_clsid.exe) installed succesfully, but I experience very frequent image lockups (on a 400MHz Pentium II with 256 MB PC133 SDRAM and GeForce4 Ti4200 VTD8X 128MB).
Could anyone else confirm these issues?

Try adjusting the decoder options in the FFDSHow video decoder confiuration. I experienced the video lockups but sound still playing due to the quality conrol 'Drop frame on delay' setting. It would catch up after a minute or two but got annoying.

Certain formats are cpu/vid intensive. Tried using an H.264 vid on my laptop and only started getting smooth play when enabling 'Resize & aspect' to not only resize to a smaller output but also setting the 'Luma Method' to 'point'.

Seems higher quality vids on some systems cause alot of video delay (latency behind the audio). Can see (and adjust setting accordingly) the video delay by enabling the OSD and checking in 'Video Delay'.

BeTwin (98/ME)

http://www.nova-sout..._faqs_luso.html
Thin Computing, Inc. is announcing BeTwin 98/ME, a software solution that enables two to five users to share the power of one PC.

The 98/ME solution relieves technology expense by centralizing computer resources, and providing access for additional computer users. BeTwin 98/ME saves businesses, homes, training centers, and schools money on computer hardware, upgrades and maintenance.

BeTwin 98/ME cost-effectively expands a computing environment, and reliably meets typical functionality demands. BeTwin 98/ME transforms a Windows computer (98/98SE or Win ME) into a host for additional users. Users multiply by simply adding off-the-shelf video cards, monitors, keyboards, and mice to the host PC. Capable to assign a unique desktop and network login to each user, BeTwin 98/ME supports popular Windows applications, including email and access to the Internet. BeTwin 98/ME stations and the PC host work simultaneously - yet independently.

Betwin 98/ME

Placas de som adicionais podem ser instaladas para obter som na estação.

seeing as Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06r1 no longer updates and i keep it portable anyways, i wrote up a dirty batch simple and roughly modeled after one of jimmsta's. uses wget.(i use SSL static build)

"wget -N http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.ref" placed in batfile in same dir works very well.
if the file's up-to-date, it states - Server file no newer than local file `defs.ref' -- not retrieving.
if the file's not up-to-date, you can watch it download at the command prompt. :thumbup

hope this helps somebody. :D

Apparently professional still updates fine -(thx Philco), but I was diggin' around on the lavasoft forums, and if i'm not mistaken, it won't exactly be easy to get from them.

What free AntiVirus for 98 do you think is the fastest? I'm having to run an 8-year-old PC for a few months, and I want to stay safe, but don't want to make it any slower than it already is.

Fastest and best is common-sense.
You may run an on-demand antivirus scanner whenever you think there might be a risk, otherwise just 'watch your step'.

Look on the second post of this topic and you will find a link to Avast! 4 Home virus scanner.
It's probably one of the fastest and it works in 98.
You will need to register for a product key, but registration is free and lasts for 14 months.
After that you simply re-register.

the only doubt i have, is that i already had the latest definition, so i haven't actually seen it overwrite.
it does state, however - Server file no newer than local file `defs.ref' -- not retrieving.

It sure helped me! Thanks a lot. You rock! :thumbup
