In Windows XP, the Quick Launch Bar is hidden by defaul. Is there any way to add this Bar during the unattended installation?

thanks, C :)

Search button is your friend. If you tried searching "Quick Launch," you would have come up with this:

Not that it would matter.. but if you are pre-SP1 there is another key that must be run... eitherway, here's a REG file with both keys...

Geckotek: I know you pointed to another post... but this one is a REG file.. Some people like it one way, some the other...

Take your pick :)

I know you each have your methods... But I never understood the need to "convert" something that is already in a format that is so easily usable. You guys and your INF files :) You spend way too much time editing them. If you were like me, dropping the REG file into a directory is all you would have to do to get it to install next time you use it. I have a discovery script that scans the directory and installs any REG files you have.

oh... if you are interested in it.. here you go!

@echo off
echo Importing Default User registry keys...
for /f %%i IN ('dir /b .\files\regkeys\*.reg') DO regedit /s .\files\regkeys\%%i
echo -completed
:end

I run this from cmdlines.txt (for default user registry changes) and in this example I keep the REG files in the $OEM$\files\regkeys directory.

I find it is easier to administer than having one huge file of registry keys. You can easily edit one key or drop in a new one each time you want.

yes I know :)
I was using the regs just the way you mentioned as well
but there are some registry that I want to be written to each default user that's been created and afaik I cannot do that with regs since when the regs are executed, the whole registry has already been created.
the hive inf files formats are a bit different than the .reg's
ie
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon","ReportBootOk",0x00000002,"0"

just putting this if u've not looked at the inf files. They look like this...

ow sorry so I can use the cmlines for default user
I haven't discovered that yet
Thanks!! un4given1 I'll see to it

yep... if you hit SHIFT+F10 at any time during GuiMode Setup you will get a command prompt, and you can check the current user by typing "SET"

You will see that you are the "Default User"

and actually how do you execute this from cmdlines
just to fully understand and for the sake of not making many errors :)

So, does this mean some reg files will work in cmdlines and some not? I thought the registry wasn't fully loaded at that point.

To use that from the cmdlines.txt..
[commands]
".\regfiles.cmd" where regfiles.cmd is the file earlier

copy regfiles.cmd to the root of $OEM$

I only make changes to the HKCU keys from there. Any HKLM keys are loaded after reboot.

Can this command be used in cmdlines? My Installs.cmd currently installs regkeys in this manner...

:: ---------- Adjust the registry

ECHO Adding some Local Machine settings.
START "" /WAIT REGEDIT /S "HKLM.reg"

ECHO Implementing the Folder Cache settings.
START "" /WAIT REGEDIT /S "FoldCache.reg"

ECHO Implementing the Command Prompt Here feature.
START "" /WAIT REGEDIT /S "CMDHere.reg"

ECHO Implementing My Computer & My Documents Sort Order.
START "" /WAIT REGEDIT /S "MCSort.reg"

ECHO Implementing the "Associate Mail Button with Outlook Express" settings.
START "" /WAIT REGEDIT /S "OEAssign.reg"

ECHO Altering the Stubpath settings.
START "" /WAIT REGEDIT /S "StubPath.reg"

ECHO Importing metapad 3.5 Filters.

START "" /WAIT REGEDIT /S "Filters.reg"

if you create a batch file you can run it from cmdlines.txt :) That is how I do it.
What if everything around you, isn't quite as it seems...
What if all the world you used to know, is an elaborate dream...
And if you look at your reflection, Is that all you want to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks, Would you find yourself... find yourself afraid to see?

I think the answer is no. CMDLINES.TXT is parsed, not run. So you need to call a cmd file as Un4given1 has mentioned to do these actions.

You can add what he has written to your installs.cmd if that's what you're asking but you cannot add the command he has written directly in cmdlines.txt.

There is a set of single quotes, so that alone wouldn't let you.

AFAIK... Cmdlines.txt and svcpack.inf both run AS the "Default User", so any changes made to registry files will replicate to all users of that PC.

GuiRunOnce, however, runs as the LOGGED user at that moment. :D

Most of the time, it's the administrator (duhhh  ) since its the account used for configuring the PC initially. Someone pointed out that pressing SHIFT-F10 during GUI mode setup will get you a command prompt and by writing 'SET' you could check who was the current logged user. Therefore, the choice of WHERE you make registry imports/hacks is obvious. :)

Almost correct... just worded wrong. The registry settings aren't REPLICATED to all users because there aren't any users yet. The items are written to the Default User profile. This profile is the profile base used for all new profiles, so every profile will get these settings when they are created. :)

so... every reg tweak (HKCR, HKLM, HKCU) gets applied to the default user... and copied to the user profile when you create it at the welcome screen?

Hell yeah ... this has saved my sanity. Being obsessive compulsive about EVERYTHING being right with a windows install I can now script changes to default user very easily ensuring the same environment is re-created everytime, for all users.

Darned I'm glad google put me onto this forum.

what is the cmdlines.txt supposed to look like when you use the .reg version of this?

or is it just

[COMMANDS]
".\QUICKLAUNCH.REG"

?

[COMMANDS]
"REGEDIT /S quicklaunch.reg"

The above will work when quicklaunch.reg is in the same directory as cmdlines.txt
