So I have followed the guild to make an answer file using WSIM and copied it to the sysprep directory on the machine i am going to sysprep

Then I opened cmd and typed: sysprep.exe /generalize /shutdown /unattend:answer.xml and hit enter.

The next thing I know was that sysprep executed as if I double clicked and run it in GUI mode....... have i done something wrong?

why is it doing that? Would sysprep use the answer.xml if i click ok there???

If the command you posted is exactly like the one you used then you have an extra / after the generalize. Also, while I am still learning Vista's Sysprep I think you need OOBE also, but I am not certain about that.
