I had a hard disk failure, and cannot get the system to recognise the XP cd as bootable, can I format the hard disk as a USB drive from another XP system? If so, how, or are there utilities I can use?

The CD is probably not bootable, maybe it was corrupted. I would use another PC to rebuild that XPCD.

I have four XP CD's and none of them work, but the CD reader worked last week...

If you have a 1 or 2 Gb USB stick, or another hard disk and a USB enclosure, you may go this way:

but do browse the thread's last three or four pages to get more info about the process.
