@ rsnetto:

Thanks for your detailed reports about your experiences with the installation of Windows XP onto an Intel "Sandy Bridge" chipset by using different Intel AHCI driver versions and thanks for the information, that the driver integration worked after having slipstreamed the Service Pack 3.
Since I am going to update the start post of this thread within the next days by presenting the newest Intel AHCI/RAID drivers v10.5.0.1026, I will add your finding about how to prevent problems with the XP installation onto Intel P67/H67/Z68 chipset systems running their SATA hdds/SSD's in AHCI or RAID mode..

Regards
Fernando

Strangely, Intel has withdrawn 10.5.0.1027 from P67/H67 support pages. It is still available, but only for Z68 and Q67 boards. For the others, 10.1.0.1008 is listed again as "Latest".

@ rsnetto:

Thanks for your information.
So I will wait with the intended update of my start post until Intel has presented new official RST drivers, which can be used with all Intel Southbridges from ICH7R/M up..

Fernando

Hi Guys, appreciate any help you can give to help me try get XP pro installed on a toshiba L305-S5902 model PSLB8U-002003. It originall shipped with vista but became hosed with spyware / virus then the owner tried resetting it to factory restore...unfortunetly he somehow formatted the drive and hidden recover partition and so im trying to get at least xp installed for him.

So before coming here and finding this thread i didnt realise the failed install was down to sata drivers ( i think )...windows would load files...reboot and do it all over again....in both AHCI and Compatibility mode....

Then i tried creating a slipstreamed cd using the information in the start of this thread......ive tried 3 different custom cds and all have same effect....rebots pc and tries to start install over again....

My latest attempt and adding drivers to the cd had the following

32bit Intel MSM AHCI & RAID driver v8.9.8.1005 mod by Fernando
32bit Intel MSM AHCI & RAID driver v8.9.8.1005 WHQL
32bit Intel RST AHCI & RAID driver v10.1.0.1008 mod by Fernando
Intel chipset drivers v9.1.1.1027 WHQL for integration
JMB36X_WinDrv_R1.17.62_WHQL
JMB36X_WinDrv_R1.17.62_WHQL_eSATA

Did i miss something ?? or am i adding too many to get the install to work....Im not 100% sure ho i can find out the exact drive combo i need to add to the cd....appreciate ANY help anyone can give.....

@ tones:
Welcome at MSFN Forums!
Unfortunately I didn't find the model L305-S5902 at Toshiba's web sites. So I was unable to verify the chipset and Southbridge details of this computer.

Nevertheless I will try to give you some advices:
  • For a proper XP installation onto a pc/notebook with unknown SATA Controller details you need an original (=untouched) XP CD with integrated SP2 or SP3 as source.
  • If you have set the SATA Controller to "IDE" mode (= "Compatibility" mode) within the BIOS, you don't need to integrate/load any third party SATA AHCI or RAID driver.
  • For a successful XP installation it is not necessary to integrate any third party chipset driver. If the SATA Controller has been set to "AHCI" or "RAID" mode, you have to integrate just the suitable SATA (AHCI or RAID) driver.
  • If you want to get XP installed in "AHCI" or "RAID" mode, but you are unsure regarding the manufacturer of the on-board SATA AHCI/RAID Controller, you can veryfiy it by doing a test installation of Windows XP in "IDE" or "Compatibility" mode. Once the OS is up, run the Device Manager and check the HardwareID's of the "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller", where the SATA hdd is connected (right click onto the Controller > "Properties" > "Details" > "Property" > "HardwareID's"). The vendor of the Controller can be identified by the "VEN_xxxx" code (VEN_8086 is Intel, VEN_197B is JMicron etc.).

Here are some further questions:
  • Is the XP CD you used as source for the preocessing with nLite really untouched?
Look into the i386 directory of the source CD for a file named WINNT.SIF. If you should find such file, the CD is not an original MS one and not suitable for the integration of any third party SATA driver.
  • Did you ever try to get XP installed by booting off the original (untouched) XP CD in "Compatibility Mode"? If yes, did the XP Setup detect the hdd of the system?
  • At which stage of the XP installation did you get the infinite reboot loop?
  • Has the SATA hdd been detected by the XP Setup at all?

Regards
Fernando

Not sure if you will be able to open this url...

Look into the i386 directory of the source CD for a file named WINNT.SIF. If you should find such file, the CD is not an original MS one and not suitable for the integration of any third party SATA driver.

As far as i can tell it is an original, does not have that WINNT.SIF file, but does have some other winnt files....
WINNT.EXE / WINNT32.EXE / WINNT32.HLP / WINNT32.MSI / WINNT32A.DLL / WINNT32U.DLL / WINNTBBA.DLL / WINNTBBU.DL_ / WINNTBBU.DLL / Folder named WINNTUPG

Yes, tried in both modes...not sure if it detected the hdd, but going to say no....as after the files are loaded from cd and it restarts in tries to start the process over again with cd in drive....with no cd in drive after restart (and files allegedly loaded) i get a error of sorts no boot device found.....

Quote

At which stage of the XP installation did you get the infinite reboot loop?

After XP copies / loads its files for install and restarts the machine

Not sure...sorry. :(

Opps...could this be the problem.....its not got any service packs slip streamed into the cd ! * missed that bit in your instructions i guess !! Will try figure out what service pack i need to download and how to integrate into cd with Nlite.....will let you know later today if successful at this task.

Again, thank you for your help...

@ Fernando 1, Just downloaded and slipstreamed SP3 into my disk and tried in compatibility mode, loaded the files and the cd restarted the machine with same results...it finds the cd again and thinks its installing / copying files for teh 1st time...so just loops around again. *dang it !!! though it mightve fixed its self with SP3 ..lol

In AHCI mode i get a blue screen BSOD 0X0000007B

@ tones:

Try to get the complete error message, when the OS installation ends with the endless reboot. Just hit F8 while rebooting and choose the advanced option "Don't reboot at system failure". Maybe we will get more informations about the issue this way..

Another thoughts:
1. How much RAM is inside the Toshiba system? If it is more than 3 GB, try to remove 1 or 2 RAM modules beforre you restart the XP installation. Once the OS is up, you can reinsert it.
2. Did you check the BIOS settings regarding the bootable devices and the "HARD DISK BOOT PRIORITY"? The CDROM should be the first and the hdd the second bootable device, but the SATA hdd should be o top of the HARD DISK BOOT PRIORITY.

Regards
Fernando

I think i misled you...when i say endless reboot...it doesnt do it on its own....its just when the CD finishes loading files it asks to reboot pc to continue / finish installation...its at that point that it gets back to the beginning of the XP install process....
The error message after trying to install XP in AHCI mode is :

(BSOD)
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer......
Askes to check for viruses Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers...check drive to make sure it ois properly configured.....run chkdsk / f for corruption
Technical information:*** STOP: 0X0000007B (oxF78D2524, 0xC00000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

2 sticks of 1GB (2gb's)

Boot Screen shows the following
1. CD/DVD TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633P (S4)
2. HDD FUJITSU MH22160BH G1 (S1)
3. FDD (no entries)
4. LAN (no entries)
5. USB Memory (no entries)

Did you follow the advice "Hit any key to boot off the CDROM"? You should only do it, when you start the OS installation, not during the restarts while installing the OS.

Usually the first reboot comes after the user has decided, onto which hdd and partition the Setup should install the OS.
So this is the most important point: Did the XP Setup detect the SATA hdd or not, when you booted off the original Windows XP with integrated SP2 or SP3 after having set the SATA Controller to "Compatibility Mode"?

This error message means, that you have integrated a wrong SATA driver.

No, it auto loads from cd...no asking me to hit any key......just goes straight into windows setup.....maybe cos its a formatted harddrive and theres no other option available? not sure

I reset to compatibility mode...restarted pc with cd in drive...no prompt to press any key to boot from cd....It auto loads windows setup screen...bottom left window says setup is loading files......
Once files are loaded i get the welcome to setup screen *To setup windows XP now, press ENTER...then i get the User Agreemnet..click F8
Next screen i get i took a screen shot of for you.....as im not for sure its seeing the drive...seems to be if it lists the size ??
Attached File  0613111344.jpg (184.69K)
Number of downloads: 6

I choose the C partition and hit enter...thne i get the "are u sure screen to continue" Press C.....pressing C then gives me the option to leave partition as is or format...it lists the same size mbs as the screen shot....If i choose "leave as is" i get the following screen....showing a previous install attempt.
Attached File  0613111357.jpg (139.52K)
Number of downloads: 5

At this stage...if i choose a different folder...or if i formatted on previous screen the results are the same...loads windows files....then restarts pc only to find the cd and start the process all over again...if i remove the cd before it restarts i get this screen...

@ tones:

It seems, that your XP installation problem has been caused by wrong BIOS settings.
The XP Setup tries to install the OS onto the Intel UNDI (= Universal Network Device Interface) via your LAN port. For details you may look >here<.

Please enter the BIOS and make sure, that the CDROM has been set as "First Boot Device" and the HDD as "Second BOOT Device". Try to disable all other listed BOOT Devices incl. "LAN".

After having done and saved the correct BIOS settings, retry to boot off the original XP CD with integrated SP3 (but without any third party drivers) in "Compatibility Mode" and look, what happens.
You should choose the offered NTFS partition 1 and let Setup do a quick format of it..

If the changed BIOS settings should not help, do the following:
  • After you have created a new and formatted partition for the XP installation wait until the reboot happens.
  • At the beginning of the reboot press the key for entering the BIOS.
  • Set the HDD as "First Boot Device", save this setting and let the computer reboot.

This should solve your problem.

Good luck!
Fernando

Checked that link but im afraid its above my pay grade...dont understand what its saying or asking me to do :(

As for everything else you asked me to do...followed it to the letter....

Booted from cd in compatibility mode....

Number of downloads: 2

once files were loaded and it asked me to reboot i entered bios and mad HDD 1st boot option

The same thing happened as before....didnt find copied files and started to do the install from scratch from the cd.....i stopped this and took out cd before it started to copy anything...restarted pc (no cd in drive) but then got that black screen error that i posted above

Godd dang it ....this is crazy :(

Disconnect USB memory or disable USB memory at BIOS.

Task: there should be no USB at boot menu listed.

First disconnect all external devices.

Windows setup does write boot settings to first BIOS device.
I suspect BIOS set USB memory as first BIOS device.
Hence booting fails, because hard disk don't contains boot settings.

Detaled specs: http://www.csd.toshi...663#contentArea
The card reader "4-in-1 Bridge Media Adapter" refers to a "Realtek RTS5121 USB Card Reader". Does "USB memory" refers to internal card reader?
Can you disable this device in BIOS?
It's your machine, I don't know this BIOS and can't suggest the required change.
Enable/disable "legacy USB support" may help or not.
Or disable USB altogether. This may require a unattended installation.

This is getting of topic here: you don't have a problem with Intel drivers.

Yes....when the timer comes on screen warming of a reboot thats when ive removed it....so it has no chance on reboot finding the cd again and try to force it to see the files its supposedly copied to hard drive...did this in both modes...

My apoligies...questions just led to more questions and here we are....

Ok...reading last few poists i began to get frustrated....so...restarted laptop..hit F2...reset BIOS back to shipped defaults....restarted pc with cd in drive....started loading windows then get the BSOD ...we know why...cos its defaulted back to AHCI mode.

Entered BIOS again...set to compatibility mode....saved...restarted pc with cd in drive....It WORKED !!!! it loaded files...restarted and continued on installing windows like it should have days ago !!

Look in BIOS....the ONLY changes i see are that the boot sequence is back to HDD as 1st boot..and its in compatibility mode. So i have NO friggin clue why it all of a sudden took. USB is still showing as boot option 5.....

Really appreciate all thye advice guys.....but im no wiser as to why its working now and not 3 days ago....

Although the last posts didn't have much to do with the topic of this thread, we are happy, that you were able at least to get Windows XP installed onto your laptop.
The only little disadvantage for you is the fact, that you are not able to use the AHCI features now, because you have set the SATA Controllers to "Compatibility Mode".

If you want to get Windows XP reinstalled while running the SATA Controller in "AHCI Mode", you have to load/integrate the correct SATA AHCI driver. So it may be a good idea to run the Device Manager, open the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" section and look for the HardwareID's of the listed "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controllers" (right click onto them > "Properties" > "Details" > "Property" > "HardwareID's").
Please post them here and I will give you an advice, which driver you should take.

Regards
Fernando
