I does not have a vista computer at my hand, but I believe that it is similar to windows xp so, at least for WinXP this is the solution:
1. Press the Windows-flag button + E, find the windows explorer in the start menu or click run and type explorer.
2. Click tools on the top of the windows explorer window (you know, the dropdown menus)
3. Click file types on the top bar
4. Click advanced (near the bottom)
5. Click change icon and select your new icon (Icon is included in the executable file, located in the Microsoft Office\Office12 folder)

That should do the trick, I think. Just be sure that you do that with all the file types you want :-)

hi..be sure u r using an original version...
if so, u have to do a system restore
such a strange problem!!!!
but, firsf, try to use powertoys or any icons repair freeware
or right click any word file, properties, open with,word12/2007
no no,first login in the safe mode,as administrator,do the repair. if failed, command prompt,sfc/scannow...after finishing,do ur office repair...if failed do the system restore
u had to make a full back up before (back up full pc) to be sure that the restore will be succesful

You may want to restore your icons by editing the registry. The registry keys look like this:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.8\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\WINNT\\Installer\\{90110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}\\wordicon.exe,1"

for word files.

Note that for Word doc files, it's called Word.Document.8. For docx, it would be Word.Document.12.

Also, the path to your wordicon is actually in the %windir% folder. You'll need to search through the installer folder in %windir% to find the folder that contains all the icons and other office stuff. It'll be in a folder of the type {xxxx}.
