I have XP Pro using the Linksys WUSB11 usb network adapter and the Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router.

For the life of me, Windows will not release and/or renew the IP address. Everything is setup for DHCP. What gives? Reinstalled the driver for the network adapter, still no luck. What causes windows to not release/renew the IP address?

I have 2 other computers on my wireless network and they work fine - i can release and renew all day if I want. What gives?

Try reinstalling TCP/IP instead

And exactly how to uninstall/remove TPC/IP - then put it back on? I've never seen an option in XP to uninstall/remove TCP/IP. You can uncheck it in the network area...but the uninstall button is greyed out (unlike how you can uninstall client for MS networks and all that other junk).

EDIT: Did some reading and tried this (still unsucessful)

at a command prompt, I typed: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

That's supposed to reset the IP stacks to how they were orginally when XP was installed. However, it didn't solve my problem..still can't get an IP address from the DHCP and still can't get on the net w/that one computer.

Now im not sure about your brand of router... but can you do it from the routers config page (usually found at http://192.168.0.1 )

its probably under the routers status pages. it should have a release renew option there, as doing it from your pc will probably send the request to your router, as you are on an internal IP with your Pc dont forget! Your router is the gateway.. do the release renew from that if at all possible. If you cant do it from there... can you do it from your modem?

Guys...what does my routers IP address have to do w/release and renew and IP address on a computer? hmm..how about nothing! If my router is set up to act like a DHCP server...there's nothing wrong w/my router (esp since it's giving out IP address' to other computers).

Doesn't matter now...I found the problem. The Winsock was all jacked up so I found a utility program to reinstall the Winsock and redo all the TCP/IP stuff. Worked and the computer finally got a freakin' IP address from the router.

And the reason were mentioning the ip of your router, becasue in most cases you can release and renew ips via the routers internal software.

If you ask a question you FIRST need to give a much more detail description of your problem. When on a network you can be referring to 2 different IP's.

1. Network IP
2. Actually (external) IP

You also have to take in consideration if you ask a question people will reply with their experiences. If you get a reply you don't like your rude and childish response is not needed. After all its YOU asking for help, not them.

Steve, you didnt specify where you wanted the IP from.

Nor did you give us much of a clue as to your proficiency level with IT tech, hence my previous post in this thread, both suggesting things and probing for more info.

Ok, first off, since I'm a newbie here, I apologize for my abruptness. I should have stated I'm using a static IP on my router and that would have solved the case of renew/release the IP on the router or the workstation. It was the workstation I was dealing with.

For those of you who wonder, it's not my computer - it's a friend of mine (with 3 computers on one network). Needless to say, I did find the problem - there was a backdoor on the PC and it was messing up the TCP/IP, Winsock, host file, and all the networking goodies. Killed the trojan, rebuilt the TCP/IP and all - and it works great..wireless and wired. Case solved.

i have a belkin router and i get the same thing my network ip stays at 192.168.2.22 say for this machine which i am replying off. in a way its good cause all my ports which have been forwarded for emule are on this ip. i currently have 2 machines which have the same ips everytime they switched...(i hardly ever turn them off!)

I am having a similar problem - but with XP Home (would that matter?). I am not a real "smart" IT person. Set up a cable modem and Linksys router last week - had two desktops connected via ethernet, and a laptop via wireless. Everything seemed to work. Then I used the Wizard to created a "Home Network" to basically share printers. The printing worked, but the desktop with XP stopped connecting to the internet. I've tried to "undo" the network and everything else I can think of, but I can not "renew" the IP address. I also don't know how to log into the router as previously suggested. When I go to the Local Area connection from XP and try to "Repair" it, it tells me that "Renewing the IP address" failed.

Suggestions?

if you read his question, you would know better than to suggest going to the router. If you can't release ip on computer it would be a winsock issue. Don't answer a question if your not paying attention our you don't really understand the issue and people won't get frustrated with you.
