To allow Windows Mobile users to work with Office documents created in the Open XML formats, Microsoft has developed an upgrade for Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile applications. Yesterday, Microsoft quietly updated its mobile productivity suite to support Office 2007 file formats. What took Microsoft so long?
With all Microsoft's push for OOXML (Open Office XML) standardization, Windows Mobile support would sure seem like a no-brainer. But it took Microsoft quite awhile to get out the support, which is now available.
The new Office Mobile 6.1 supports documents created in 2007 versions of Excel, PowerPoint and Word. There's even compression support for those rascally Office .zip files.
The release has important symbolic significance, coming a whole two days before the anniversary of Office 2007's release to enterprises.
