AtGuard Firewall user looking for new application

Recommended Posts

I have been using atguard forever with xp sp1 but its time I need sp2

due to apps that require SP2 to install. That being the case atguard

will not work with XP SP2 and the atguard beta project is dead so I'm

stuck looking for a replacement personal firewall.

Ashampoo’s pro firewall is so far the leading contender but it still

lacks one feature if I use atguard as a baseline. That being the

ability to block an app based on an IP or domain. For those of you who

know atguard you know that its what creating a rule, the rule

assistant prompts you for:

* The current APP/Any App

* The current Port/Any Port

* The current Address/Any Address

* Gives the option to name the rule something other than filename.exe.

Eg:

I am looking for a firewall that offers this level of control when

defining an on the fly rule without the need to have to go into the

app and build a rule from scratch.

Can anyone make any recommendations?

I have heard of people using AtGuard wtih sp2 but so far it does not work on any install

I have tried it on. When installed it stops all web traffic until you disable it.

Thanks.

I used to like AtGuard too :) Outpost v4.xxx is somewhat similar once you get to the actual firewall part. The newer version is a bit more bloaty/symantec-ish in appearance. Comodo firewall also looks kind of similar though I've not tried that one yet (plus it is free!)

Its been a while since my last post on this topic. I'm still searching for a firewall that will allow for this level of granularity when auto generating rules. I have looked into all the replies to this thread and each suggested firewall was lacking on one way or another.

So if anyone else has any other suggestions i would appreciate the feedback...
