@Felix

Thanks for the report. Change the name of your download folder, removing the parens: "(" and ")". CMD.exe and NT Command scripts do not play well with any of these characters: "(", ")", "&", "|", "<", ">", "!", "%". This is also why the error count was incorrect in the last line of your MSDBuild.log:

14:07:14.53: MSDBuild.cmd ends with 0 errors and 2 warnings.

The script's logic branching will get confused if your folder uses parens.

@Everyone

If you want to post an issue report, it's okay to copy-and-paste a small section of your log in your post (inside a code block), but please do not code block your whole log! When you post an issue, please include your entire log file (unedited) as an attachment. That way I can download it and look at it offline. Thanks! -DS

@Felix

Where exactly did you see "v4.5"? I'm looking for it, but I cannot find attached to my Guide or MSDBuild, except in the past-tense. (The current guide version discusses Guide v4.5 in a couple places: Version History, et cetera.) Windows Installer is also listed at v4.5 because that is the version of that Windows update.

PS the previous version worked fine with the folder previous structure. Also WGAnotify is popping up a help window showing switches... This only happens after the first time running MSDBuild i.e. 2nd, 3rd etc... have also tried copying all files to c:\tmp and still have errors... It also apprears from testing that most of the errors occur when using any folder name that has spaces in it. The previous version didn't have this bug.

PS also when using WUD i noticed that when downloading the guide it is still saying version 4.5 in the download information text...

@Felix

Okay, now we got it. Building your 7-zip installer package fails because your Download folder path contains spaces. (I'm not guessing now, I just tested and verified this on my own PC). This is a legitimate bug.

Folder paths with spaces most likely worked in v4.5 and not in v5.0 because I changed the 7-zip command line. (I moved all files into WorkMSDB and filter out the unneeded ones now). So I need to play around with the 7-zip command to support folder paths with spaces again. In the mean time, change your folder path to one with none of the special characters I listed above, and no spaces, and you should be able to build your installer.

If that is all I missed in my own testing, then it's a been good day! :blushing:

WGANotify Setup Help dialog is not an error:

In fact, it is even expected, and documented! If you read the Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications section of the Guide, you will understand why. HINT: It is also mentioned in the MSDBuild.log file that you just posted above:

.-- 16:14:50.42:   WARNING: Could not extract WindowsXP-KB905474-ENU-x86-Standalone.exe.
.-- (If you saw a WGANotify Setup dialog, the file
.-- was already extracted--disregard this warning.)

This is a non-issue. I could not come up with an elegant way to determine if WGAN was already extracted and renamed or not. So I just documented what happens. Read the documentation! This is the same as it was in v4.5.

As to WUD saying that it is downloading v4.5:

No where in the current MSDownloads.ulz update list is MSDBuild or the Guide referred to as version 4.5. So make sure you re-download the MSDownloads.ulz update list from the first post. (I clearly state in my guide that you must re-download this file with each new version.) Also, just to be sure, delete MSDownloads.ul from either (or even both) of these folders first:

  • %ProgramFiles%\Windows Updates Downloader
  • %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Supremus Corporation\Windows Updates Downloader

Then re-download MSDownloads.ulz from the first post.

@Everyone

I will look into fixing the folder-path-with-spaces bug in the next day or two. (However, it may be a 7-Zip limitation). In the mean time, do not use : "(", ")", "&", "|", "<", ">", "!", "%", or spaces in your download folder path!

Another Note.

Say WUD is installed, and you previously downloaded my old update list (v4.5). And say you download the new update list (v5.0) while WUD is running. Then you must either refresh or restart WUD before you can actually use the updated list. Just click the green arrow refresh button after downloading the new list.

One quick fix is simply to change the path used to short filenames - that can be done simply bu changing line 78 in your MSDBuild.cmd file

from CD /D "%~dp0"
to CD /D "%~sdp0"

Folder paths with spaces most likely worked in v4.5 and not in v5.0 because I changed the 7-zip command line. (I moved all files into WorkMSDB and filter out the unneeded ones now). Applogies - i did miss that, have been working on some stuff for 36 hours straight... the old grey matter is getting tied. One suggestion for stopping the prompt is to use 7zip to extract the files you want to use... example

Start /Wait "Extract KB905474 Download" .\7za457\7za.exe /e "%%W" -o"%%~dpnW" legitcheckcontrol.dll

I tested this quickly and it works well...

Yes i did download the latest version, however had forgot to update it in WUD... fixed now - thanks for the reminder.

I get that operating on little sleep thing! :zzz:

There are two reasons I extract WGAN.

  • To acquire LegitCheckControl.dll for comparision.
  • To extract the payload file (which supports integration and slipstreaming) from the external shrinkwrap wrapper (which does not) and discard the external shrinkwrap wrapper.

As you noted earlier it is only on a second (or later) MSDBuild execution that you see the dialog.

But I think I have an idea how to get around this now. When MSDBuild first extracts the WGAN Payload, I'll have it set a variable inside SFX-MSD.ini (that did not exist there on the first execution), then on subsequent executions that variable will tell MSDBuild not to skip extracting WGAN.

  • 2 weeks later...

thank you for this great job

it worked well and i test the work in my Virtual PC WinProSp3

i tried to in WMPlayer v11 it is install well & also Ie7

But when i open up "Downloaded Program Files" folder & check the properties of installed

activex controllers they were damaged

i do not know what is the cause

i like working on batch files & likes to analyze

big batch files like yours

i found this simple unnoticed error but it does noting for the job

in MSDBuild.cmd file there is unneeded line i think

I'm not sure why your ActiveX controls were listed as damaged (you are the only person to have ever reported such an issue). My recommendation would be to just slipstream SP3 into an XPCD, then integrate only the updates listed in my guide, and MSDownloads.exe. Then install on your PC and see the results.

I'm assuming the line of the MSDBuild.cmd script I've isolated above is the one you believe is in-error. This line is not in-error and it is as it should be (i.e. as I designed it to be).

At this point, the MSDBuild.cmd script executes a subroutine to extract WGAN; the subroutine is named: Extract KB905474 WGA Notifications in the log file. And this subroutine has determined that the user did not download WGAN (bad user!), so there is no further work to do to extract WGAN (since the WGAN file does not exist). Now since there is no further work for it to do, the subroutine "completes" (as opposed to the subroutine aborting due to some critical error). In the case where the user does not download WGAN, the Extract KB905474 WGA Notifications subroutine "completes", by logging a warning to the user in the log file (and by sending a beep to the PC speaker), this is handled by the line above which ends in "skipping...". But the MSDBuild.cmd script keeps marching on (not downloading WGAN is not a show-stopper). That line does not communicate if the WGAN file was actually extracted or not, rather it communicates that MSDBuild.cmd has progressed to the end of the Extract KB905474 WGA Notifications subroutine. This is what the Goto :EOF line afterward does--goes to the end of the subroutine. If you read the .log file you will see I give each subroutine a header and a complete line at the end. Warnings will never stop the script from continuing, only errors do.
