I customarily use A:\WINNT.SIF during an XP installation to establish D:\Documents and Settings. This works well with full retail and universal OEM editions of XP, but so far I have not gotten it to work with upgrade versions of XP. Is there a way?

By the way, I'm not at this moment too concerned with all the bells and whistles of a full unattended install. I just want to easily establish Documents and Settings on the D drive under an upgrade install on a blank drive. I realize "unattended" seems inapplicable under an upgrade install on a blank drive, since I'll have to be in attendance to pop in a qualifying Windows CD, but I'm assuming that an answer file can still be used during an upgrade install.

One piece of background: I've found in the past that I get an error during installation if the D: drive is not already formatted, so before I run the regular install I run the Recovery Console and use DiskPart and Format to get C and D partitions set up and formatted. I mention this 1) in case it affects the drive labels used in WINNT.SIF and 2) in case you can tell me how to avoid this preliminary step with the Recovery Console.
