:/ I recently uninstalled Diskeeper defragmenter trial software from my computer after deciding to not buy it. On my first boot after uninstalling the software the computer locked with the BSOD. This is the only blue screen I have ever seen on Windows 2000 Professional. The message given was Stop:0x0000007B, Inacessible_Boot_Device.

I immediately put in my Windows 2000 CD and started up in the Recovery Console and ran the automatic repair scenario. The machine still didn't start. I went back in and ran a couple of fixes manually they were FixMBR, Chkdsk /R. Still no luck so I started reading stuff from the Windows 2000 Professional Resource Kit and the Microsoft support site. At Microsoft I saw mention of a problem with some Iomega drivers causing this problem so I ran a "listsvc" command and disabled all the Iomega driver services on C: drive.

I finally installed a parallel copy of Windows on a different partition of the hard drive. Then I reinstalled a complete backup of the C: drives Registry using a backup I had made a couple of weeks ago using ERDNT. This also didn't fix the problem.

I finally noticed that when I ran Windows Explorer under the new Windows installation that my second physical drive was not being shown and as a result all my drive partition letters were changed from what they used to be. I checked the BIOS and Device Manager and in both cases the second physical drive (drive 0) was present and no problems are indicated with it. Just a few minutes ago I decided to run Norton's disk utilities to see if it saw the second drive and it did not.

The second physical drive, actually my primary master (drive 0), contains system and system state backup volumes. The other drive, primary slave (drive 1), contains the nonfunctioning copy of Windows 2000 and the parallel working copy I just installed. I can see and work with all my data so at this point nothing is lost except access to my backup files. If worse comes to worst I will be able to salvage my data but I will be faced with reinstalling all my apps.

I apologize for the length of this post but I want to be as complete as I can on the first try.

If anyone has any suggestions as to other potential fixes please do let me know. If you want to email me I can get your mail on my wife's computer at bellebritton@cox.net.

I would have recommended you do what you already have done...

i dont see how this is caused by PM8 though, ive never had that problem.. or any problem with it.

i have had winXP and win2k fail though and fail to boot before, try run CHKDSK on it in recovery console, see if it boots then, its whats solved it for me in the past.

If no hardware has changed, which is the usual cause of Stop7B errors, then it's probably gonna be the registry at fault. The error occurs when the plug n play ID for the drive controller doesn't match the value held in the registry - you can edit it yourself, here's the knowledgebase article here. Hope it helps :)

I already have run Chkdsk /r and I've replaced the registry (all hives) with a 3 week old backup. None of this helps.

The second disk on the computer is detected as hardware but is not shown in any way in Windows Explorer. Makes me think that the partition table for that drive is completely hosed.

Thanks
Cecil

The closest error I got to your was when trying to move a W2k image from one PC to another. I used the Windows Article to slove my problem.

However, seeing that you are a much more experienced profesional than myself, you have pretty much tried everything. You have even tried stuff I would have never dreamed of trying. Did you contact Microsoft Tech Support? What did they recommend? How About Diskeeper Tech Support?

UICE - :)
