Can you look in the event log for more information about what's going on? It should have written an entry when Media Center failed to start with some more information on what blocked it.

Also tried setting ALLOW MEDIA CENTER via computerdefaults.exe. NOTHING

Not sure if it is related or may help but someone I was talking to the other day said that they where having a problem with a package they where deploying which had the same guid as an existing package and the error they got sounded very much like this error. Don't know if it will help but maybe someone can look to see if their is a guid issue for Media Center and something else that exists in Server 2008

To take a closer look at what is going on, I use Process Monitor from Microsoft and it show me that enshell.exe cannot find HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\App Management and HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\App Management. I take a look at a vista but it doesn't have that key either.

what does it say in the event viewer (specifically).

I was trying to get wintv running on server 2008 using the bdaserver/reghacks from this forum.

Then I insttalled the win 7 64 bit beta - and wanted to crry. It reognized my HVR-1600 card, and the motorola setup. got ir working. the only bug is the waraning that shows up saying you can't record the broadcast.

so I ran through the BDAserver instructions on the win7 partitio. there were 2 sysWOW64 files missing, but i just copied the 32 bit versions over to the sysWOW64 folder.
all said and done, I can see tv. but media center is sooo preety.
thanks to all the folks who are making life interesting.

Hopefully someone can extract the necessary files from the beta, and get the full monty running under Server.

We finally got Windows Media Center install on Windows Server 2008 but a last minute show-stopper bug emerge due to software restriction policy. If you would like to help complete the product you can download it here: http://www.msfn.org/...e-MCE-Stuff.zip

1. run MCE from Vista.bat on Vista
2. copy C:\MCE from vista to C:\MCE in server 2008
3. run MCE to Server 2008.bat (or you can copy all files in C:\MCE to C:\)
4. run Media Center - Add.reg

If you run Windows Media Center you will get this error: Windows cannot open this program because it has been prevented by a software restriction policy. For more information contact your system administrator.

If somebody find a solution, let me know.

Do I just run the file or do I need the Vista DVD or what-not ... there's no readme at all!

Thanks,
deltatux

Alright, I figured out how to use the batch script. However, it's an x86 copy and it's quite useless on a 64-bit processor. I tried changing it to amd64 but apparently it isn't that simple. Can someone please make a 64-bit version of the batch script?

Thanks,
deltatux

I had Vista Media Center working like a charm on my Server 2008 x64 (64 bit).
I had to fiddle with many registry settings, to get it to work. The answer to the problem "Windows cannot open this program because it has been prevented by a software restriction policy" is BDA files. (i think, cant seem to remember properly..lol)

Funny i just re-installed my server, and lost Media Center, and dont have the time to write or create a batch file for it. But i will try my best to write a bat file to install Media Center on server.
If i do get the time to write the bat file to install media center on server 2008 x64, unfortunately its going to be only x64. I DONT use x86 OS anymore, because of my 8gb ram.

If anyone is willing to give it another try to get Media center working on server, then make sure you install my BDA pack as well.

It would be nice if you can post a batch-script :)

Or a sort of howto...

I'm running x64 vesrion only too. Because all my machines have at least 4 gb of ram.
