Anyone (else) doing Server 2008 certification?

With Windows Server 2008, the old, reliable "MCSE" and "MCSA" titles are lost. The ground floor certification for Server 2008 is the "MCTS", Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist, and there are three MCTS titles available.

I will be taking a bootcamp and the tests for this certification next month. I have been tinkering with 2008 for a short time and it looks like it might be a fun class to take. I did Server 2003 MCSE through a bootcamp and it was an interesting experience.

The MCTS seems to be the lower tier certification, maybe like the MCSA. They also have "MCITP" which looks like the higher end "Engineer" level certification. Since I am paying out of pocket for my class, I haven't even asked about the MCITP since it will probably be yet another small fortune.

MCITP looks like it's more than one test. 70-648 moves from MCSA2003 to MCTS/2008AD and MCTS/2008NetInfra.

After that, for MCITP you would need 70-646, PRO: Windows Server 2008, Server Administrator. According to the site I posted, this test isn't ready yet.

Webcasts, books, and just live testing are what i have always done, build a 2008 lab, even better build it at home and run your house on it, forces you to learn it and if it breaks to fix it, labs can be easily ignored when a problem arises. there are several microsoft learning tracks you can check out at

right now i have the Introducing windows server 2008 book (http://www.microsoft.com/MSPress/books/11163.aspx) it is an ok read, gets you a basic understanding of what is new and changed from 2003

even more fun to read is the Changes in Functionality from Windows Server 2003 with SP1 to Windows Server 2008

lots of good information out there just have to search, check out all the MS blogs, they leave little nuggests of joy in many of their posts. things you won't find in books and exams

Not looking for "track" options, I've always prefered (my own) self study pace, I've no interest in classrooms, & I detest boot-camps, brain-dumps and the id10ts they tend to produce.

I'm currently running 5 2k8 servers via VPC 2 RC0s (one core), 2 RC1s, and 1 RTM. I also plan on migrating 2 of the 3 physical server in my (home) lab to 2k8 as soon as time permits.

Right... been at that for many years already. The company I'm with does 24/7 server management contracts, so I work frequent 16 hour days, nights, weekends, and holidays. I'm not some green punk kid straight outa college ... I'm also not (stupid) cocky enought to think I can pass the thing with my eyes closed (rust forms quickly at my age).

I'm just looking for some kind of heads-up on what topics they're planning to grinding on this trip through. Like 70-292's (suprise) beating on WAN level DNS configurations throughout the entire test (which I did pass the first time). The ExamCram that I had depended on in the past series (now ExamCram2), has completely gone to hell IMO so I'm looking for a proper alternative. $100 bucks is $100 bucks Ya know...

70-648 MCSA migration to 2008

AD related was still heavy on DNS (GlobalNames zone) , AD LDS (light weight directory services) AD FS (federated services) setting up

Networking was all about NAP, the new RRAS setup using SSTP vpn for vista SP1, Server core installations, NOTHING on Hyper-V be prepared for Virtual Server 2005 R2 questions though.

i used some tests from measureup.com they worked out very well and for 55$ it seemed a good deal passed so it is justified for me
