WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) for Windows 98SE 1.1
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) is an API developed by Microsoft and first implemented in Windows Me. It allows seemless communication between image acquisition applications and digital imaging devices (such as digital still cameras, scanners and DV camcorders). Similar to TWAIN but without the hassle of particular drivers, best of all there's a TWAIN DSM which enables any WIA device to appear as a TWAIN device to TWAIN compatible software. WIA as it will ship in Windows ME already supports over 100 devices.

This product is port WIA from Windows Millenium for Windows 98SE.

WIA for Windows 98se is compatible to any packages of updatings (MDCU, UnSP, RP7).

Only request: this WIA not conflict with NUSB (digital cameras)?

i have here CanoScan 2700f SCSI scanner. this thing does not even have a driver, and it is only controlled via software which is TWAIN compatible... i have installed WIA, but i see no difference...

how can i benefit from it, or how can i detect if it do something?

Hi maximus-decim,
I posted this in MDGx's updates topic, but it should be here:

WIA 1.0 back-dated some files...
I understand that it overwrites various STI files with the Me versions...
However, it back-dated Twain files (I'm using the newer versions from XP SP2) and also MSVCP50.DLL.

TWUNK_32.EXE 1.7.1.0 > 1.7.0.0
TWAIN_32.DLL 1.7.1.1 > 1.7.1.0
MSVCP50.DLL 5.00.7051 > 5.00.7022

These files are not unique to Windows Me and should not be back-dated, especially MSVCP50.DLL since it could break some older software.
I have restored the files to the newer versions.

Aside from that, it's an awesome update pack!

Will the Sticpl from Win2000 work with this?
Can newer drivers from Win2000 or WinXp be added to this?
just curious.

I am not too sure about of the actual usefullness of it.

I removed that WIA component from my Windows ME system quickly after I installed the OS because I found it buggy, intrusive, kicking in for no reason and affecting performance/stability when doing so.

It's actually not more needed than the autorun feature for CDs I believe.

Is IE 6.0sp1 required just during the install? Will it work after I have installed all the upgrades/patches and then used 98Lite to remove IE and WMP?

Has anyone tested, or does anyone know if any of the WIA files including INFs from Windows XP SP3 work on 98SE?
Even the INFs could be adapted to 98SE to increase the number of supported devices - especially newer devices... :sneaky:

I was just looking at the WinXP SP3 and notice it has a lot more drivers added
maybe when you get time maximus-decim you can add some of those newer drivers.

I've been trying to get this to work in Windows 2000, another OS that never had WIA or PTP support.
I've sort of given up on it, as I can't get it to function properly, even using XP files, but I have got it installed on Windows 98SE (dual boot machine) and I do have a couple of questions about that.

It has installed and seems to work fine on Windows 98 of course, but one thing the installer did (it's in the inf file) was delete my sticpl.cpl file so I now have no applet for imaging devices in my Windows 98 Control Panel.

What it has done is add an entry {E211B736-43FD-11D1-9EFB-0000F8757FCD} in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace.
This is labelled "Scanners & Cameras".
It's also in the equivalent "MyComputer" key, and has worked there, with an extra icon in "My Computer".

It did the same thing in Windows 2000, and a new Scanners and Cameras applet appeared in the Windows 2000 Control Panel, as well as in "My Computer".
This hasn't happened in Windows 98 though, and I can't see why.

I have done some research on this, and although I couldn't find anything conclusive, I'm wondering if this ControlPanel\NameSpace function actually works in Windows 98. Presumably it does in Windows ME?!
There are no other entries there.
I'm wondering if this was overlooked, and the cpl file should not have been deleted in Windows 98.

The other thing is that my scanner (an elderly Epson GT5500) works fine with the new system, but it won't recognise my new Nikon digital camera, either as itself, or as a generic device.
Is there any way of adding it to the database and getting it to work, so at least I can use it properly in Windows 98 even if I can't in Windows 2000?
The camera has no mass storage mode, only PTP, like all current Nikon cameras apparently.
This is a problem for those using legacy operating systems like myself.

The stock answer from Nikon is to just use a card reader, which I can and do of course, but it would be nice to get the camera talking to the computer properly!

Any suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks, Dave.
:)

Just one minor suggestion: get sticpl.cpl from your backup and put it back. It ought to just work.

Thanks Den!
:hello:
That's exactly what I have done, and it does seem to be OK.
I was just a bit puzzled why it was deleted in the first place, especially as its "replacement" doesn't seem to work!
I was wondering if anyone else using this patch could confirm this, or whether it's just an issue on my system.
:)

Is there a way to uninstall it?

All my normal TWAIN entries have disapeared after I installed WIA1.1!
