Hey there. Since it looks to be impossible to run DOS games under XP (at least not without getting p***ed off and buying a 486 DX4-100 with MS-DOS 6.xx on eBay), I installed Connectix VirtualPC.

I'm one step closer to being able to run Quake and Doom on my system without having to dedicate a whole 4GB to installing Windows98 and having enough free space to run it. Unfortunately, when I shut down via the start menu in my Virtual Win98 and exit to Virtual DOS mode, the full screen seems to be squashed, or letterboxed. Also, the corresponding Windowed mode of VirtualPC seems to not have a proper 4:3 aspect ratio (I guess to make the letters not seem so tall).

This is kinda annoying, and I was wondering how, if possible, I would go about changing the native resolution of MS-DOS (Win98 ver) such that I can have my DOS games in full Full Screen, as Quake and Doom2 weren't letterboxed in the old country.

Thanks,
SilentRob

I've never used VirtualPC for gaming so I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the squished screen problem. Almost all of my DOS games run just fine in XP, though most require VDMSound for legacy SoundBlaster emulation. Even better is the fact that both Doom (and other games using that engine) and Quake have new open source engines to run them in Windows with full sound, DirectX and OpenGL support for enhanced graphics. :)

For running Doom, Doom II, Heretic and Hexen:

Here is one for Quake:

If you like old LucasArts adventure games you need this:

and of course VDMSound for other DOS games:
