Thanks to whomever posted this solution. I sure I saw it here, but couldn't find the post again to give you credit.

Equipment
Gateway Essential 667 Windows 98SE using USRobotics 805422 USB Wireless Adaptor
Actiontec GT-701WG hooked by Ethernet to
Compaq SR2180NX Vista Home Premium SP1 with shared HP PSC 1410v (61.53.25.9)
Printer name on Compaq1 is "HP PSC 1400 series". HP choice, you may be able to change it.
Networked Vista and XP machines can use the shared printer.

Basic Problem
In Network Neighborhodd the 98SE can see the Public Folder, but not the Printer on the Compaq.
side note:I have not been able open the folder yet. Gave up after waiting about 1 1/2 hours for it to open.

Using information picked up from MSFN Forums, this is how I got the 98SE to print to the shared HP PSC.

Turn off the Vista computer and disconnect the printer. The printer MUST BE CONNECTED to the 98SE for the last part
of the printer installation or it will fail.
Install the HP PSC1410v on the 98SE.
While the printer is stilled connected to the 98SE, left click Start, Settings, Printers, right click on HP PSC 1400 and left
click Properties. Click the "Details" tab.
"Print to followig port" selection will need to be changed. Click Add Port. In the popup, check Network. In the box under 'Specify the network path to the printer' type the path to the printer.. In this case it was" \\Compag1\HP PSC 1400series". Then click OK.
Do not change "Print to the following driver".
Click "Spool Settings" tab. see that "Spool print jobs so program finishes faster" and "Start printing when 1st page is
spooled" are selected. Set "Spool data format" to RAW, if not already. (If NFT is selected, the printer locks up.) Click OK, Click OK and close the Printers Folder.
Do Not Share the printer.
Turn off the 98SE and disconnect the printer. Hook the printer back up to the Vista and turn both on.
Turn the 98SE on and print something.

The printer will not show up in Device Manager, but will appear in System Information under Printer.

The rest of this is just the Network and Sharing settings and Printer settings for both machines.
