I got to tell ya. I really was not impressed with XPLite. It was such a disappointment to me after having waited so long for it's release. Especially, after the terrific job those guys did on 98Lite.

It does nothing but delete a few benign files for you..and then the job isn't all that thorough. If you look within some of the folders whose files it was to delete. It doesn't backup the files for you like it did with 98Lite. It simply deletes them, and depends solely on your installation cd to get them back...and then they wouldn't be the updated files you have gotten over a period of time, just the original ones on your installation cd.

If you use XPLite to delete ODBC, it will delete a file, ODBCCP32.DLL, that will cause Windows Update to want to replace it by way of Critical Update...over and over.

I'm not sure which component or components XPLite deletes that does this, but one of them at least messes up Microsoft's RegClean...you know that one when you can't stop it from searching for invalid registry keys each time you open it, but it finds nothing...where usually it only runs two times at the most.

But the real bottom line is I really didn't need to pay 50 dollars for a program to help me delete user avatars and the tour folder files. I'm sure a lot of people are very happy with it; I just found it to be such a disappointment.

Bold_Fortune :

"hacked xplite" is a little progy that i heard about that makes it more
useful for xp duds. i olso heard that one can use it on a 2k3 machine but i cant confirm it.

9xlite was much more powerful and removed ALL that crap that microBUG
planted in 9x system. i loved the option to make all the changes before
installing a single bit from 9x.

i have looked allover 2k3 registry hive files and inf's and made my one
changes for unattended installation.

if u wona have a sneak peak at my work do the fallowing and report back here
how it went.

1. open the file sysoc.inf in your WINDOWS\inf

2. under the line [Components] add the next line Accessibility=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessib.inf,,7

3. make a new file in WINDOWS\inf , accessib.inf

4. copy n paste the next code in the new file and save it.

That's really neat, alienboo. I followed your instructions, and sure enough, Accessibilty and Accessibility Wizard show up in my Add Remove Components Utility. I'm sorry, I already have their files deleted from my system, so I can't be much help reporting to you how it works when applied, but it looks like it sure would.

You know something about XPLite, my very biggest disappointment...almost to the point of feeling ripped off....XPLite Trial Edition boasted of how the Pro Edition had the ability to remove Windows Management Instrumentation and MS Data Access Components (MDAC). Well, XPLite Pro doesn't.

The entry that is in the Add/Remove Components Utility for WMI, as you know, doesn't work. If you can make one of these accessib.inf files at least for WMI that would be wonderful. ...and I might give you a dollar. LOL. Keep up the good work.

Thanks works well on Windows 2000. Edit the info so it would point to 2000 cd.

I have to tell you, my experience on MSFN is like moving up a notch in my education...it's like playing with a whole mess of other pros. Not taking anything away from some very knowledgeable people like Rob Relder or 2Mcbre who have taught me so much (but they are probably tired of me picking their brains anyway..lol), I'm really seeing things here from you folks I have not seen before.

alienboo, do you have any other of these accessib.inf-type tweaks you can share with me?

Also, what would I insert here to have them point to my slipstreamed XP installation cd:

[SourceDisksNames]
1 = "Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition CD-ROM","\win51ia",,\i386

Thanks.

helloha folks

i c that u tried my stuff, i must admit that im not the first to do the job,
i saw few neat tricks here in the forum and just applied my point of view to them
i HATE all the bloat stuff from MSBUG

to match this file with your OS just edit this line

[SourceDisksNames]
1 = "Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition CD-ROM","\win51ia",,\i386

and change

"Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition CD-ROM"

to

"Your OS Description"

and the "\win51ia" part to the one from your copy of your os CD, that file
shoulb be in the root.

Bold_Fortune :

Ye, i do have some more stuff that make changes to add remove, i even
managed to apply them to my unattended cd, now each time im installing 2k3 i have a more control about what i wont or not in my system

accessories -> all the fuss
system tools
administrative tools
remote assistent
ASP.Net
FAX,
Managment tools
AutoUpdate
WMI -> yes, yes, and yes

and some more that im currently working on. as soon as i finish all of them, i will publish them and wait for M$Crap to call me and offer me a job for making their OS's a bit more friendly. :)

Could I have the one for "WMI -> yes, yes, and yes"? I mean if you don't mind, but I'll understand if you don't want me to have it.

The Windows Managment Instrument is a Critical service

http://www.theeldergeek.com/windows_manage...rumentation.htm

i have managed to make an inf that removes this stuff
but i still get errors from system restore and other softwares.

about the yes yes and yes, sorry, i jumped the gun to soon :)
my code for this is NOT bulletproof at all
and even that i managed to run it, i cant say it works well.

im still working on the dependencies of WMI and other services.

i'll publish my code as soon as i know it works 100% as i did with accessibility.

i like applause :D for good work, not  for lame work

:D

alienboo, dunno, but maybe my finding on the subject which I have on my list for Slimming Down XP can help you finish your WMI project. This is what I do to delete it, anyway:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem (According to Microsoft this is: Web-based Enterprise Management data files. Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is the Microsoft implementation of WBEM.)

First, copy and paste "framedyn.dll" from this folder to C:\WINDOWS\system32. Sometimes when you run System Restore you'll get the error 'System restore was unable to start due to a missing Framedyn.dll. Please reinstall the application to fix this problem'. Or you'll get an error on startup when right-clicking on My Computer. This should fix this.

You will also need to disable Windows Management Instrumentation in Services in order to delete some of the files. You may find that a couple files still cannot be removed, but most will. For me, only two didn't delete:
"wbemcomn.dll" and "wbemprox.dll".

The "Logs" folder re-appears with its log.

I know you have been told that WMI is very important to the operation of your system. I have never found it so. Even when I run Si-Soft Sandra, the program tells me that disabling this Service on my system would be a good thing. Also, if you look in Disk Cleanup, Windows even displays the option to uninstall WMI; however, it doesn't allow you to. (Weird, why would it be listed as an "optional component" then?)

well, first i tried to clean WMI with my inf then system restore poped
and started to complain bout missing files and services and asked me to place my
cd to reload them.

i rebooted the system and got the nice crystal clear desktop with no icons on it
and no other stuff to. do u know what i mean ? a weird issue with bogus files,
at MS site and other sites i found that this problem arises from different
situations and there are to meny reasons for that.

so i thought ... **** .. why do i need system restore anyway ? lets remove that.
i tried that and for awhile it seemed to work fine, that is until installed other progy's. dono what went wrong but suddenly i got a message saying im missing this n missing that and ny a single mouse click my system crashed again.

i was having SOOO much fun ...

anyway, i cleaned everything and reinstalled and tried a different approch of
picking single files untill i find out what relies on what, i found that its like a spider web, if u pick to meny connections the system will crach randomly. :)

so, right now i have an inf to clear some files and reg enteries but i wont to find out what are the dependencies and what i can remove safely.

what did u try ?

This is all I know, alienboo:

srrstr.dll......System Restore Restore Operation Library (Deleting this will also remove the System Restore applet from Systems Properties.)

srsvc.dll.....System Restore Service (I don't use System Restore.)

But I do know that this quote I took off that link you gave me is about the most lame thing I've read for awhile:

" If you don't want your computer to work, set this to Disabled."

Gee, if that's the case, how come I'm still here after a year and a half with WMI Disabled...and still not having had to enable it or re-install XP for that same length of time?

ye ye, i know that, it windows still works if u disable WMI and few other things.
that site was only a reference, i checked few other sources to confirm.
point is, if u disable WMI, the files are still on your machine, and the system
can use them.

if u remove the files, u are prone to trouble. dont ask me why, i dont know .. yet
my inf's are intended to be used in an unattended installation.
thay make windows xp - 2k3 not installing some things by default and having
them in add / remove for later usage.

when i dont install some base files, windows is crashing. i think that some files
have to hexed and cracked for smooth operation. im working on it.

here's a code for SYSTEM TOOLS -> Backup for example, i'll add the entire
SYSTEM TOOLS inf as soon as i finnish it.
( i have the one for WMI but i still test it for errors )

Im very sorry fols, during my late night work i did a typo in the code below .. :) .. i fixed it and now this thing should work fine
