I'm a noob to this board, so bear with me. To start, I wanted to thank the developers of WinSetupFromUSB. I have been struggling for 3 days to install XP onto a tablet PC with no CD drive, and this is the first program that has helped me to install and boot XP on it. My problem, I suppose, is that I don't understand the XP boot process very well. I have XP installed onto a primary partition on the tablet, with Windows Seven on another, its just that no matter what I do, I cannot get the XP bootloader to load XP. I can boot from the WSFU jump drive and then use the second/third boot option to start XP, but whenever I try to boot that partition directly, it gives me that

"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read form the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware."
message.

I copied the boot.ini (along with all the other files from the jump drive) from the jump drive to the XP partition, which gives me the boot menu from the jump drive, but it just gives me the same error message that I get when I was getting before copying boot.ini. XP is installed to the third partition of the only hard drive on the system, and the boot.ini line that I use from the jump drive is

"multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="2. GUI Mode Setup Windows XP, Continue Setup + Start XP from HD 1" /FASTDETECT".

I guess what I am asking is why the jump drive can boot XP, but the bootloader on the hard drive can't, even using the same boot.ini file, and ntloader file. What does it do differently to boot XP? I read the FAQ and specifically the section reminding users to leave the jump drive in until after seeing the Windows Desktop for the first time after the install; and I did do that. Should I rerun UNDOREN.CMD and BINIFIX.CMD again? I am pretty new to the intricacies of Windows bootloaders, and I realize that I am probably not providing enough information to help you guys answer my question, I just honestly don't know what information (log files, directory listings, etc) to include with this message. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Once again, thanks. This install program has gotten me much closer than any other XP install method I have tried over the last three days.

(edit: I do realize that other people have had similar problems to mine, but my boot.ini file has been adjusted to use rdisk(0).)
(edit2: I just found the problem, I had made a typo when adjusting the boot.ini file. Sorry for wasting space. I am going to remember to sleep on a problem before posting about it, next time. WinSeupFromUSB is awesome. )

You may replace \WinSetupFromUSB\files\winsetup\MkMigrateInf3.cmd with the new version.
It will be used in the next version of the program.

OK... I tried and the problem is no matter how i made my usb drive, when it came to text setup for the first time. the setup program always regarded the usb drive as C drive and showed no internal hard drive at all. anyone encountered the same problem ever?

btw: i'm installing on my asus eeepc 1005 laptop.


thanks for any clue. i've been searching for installing xp from usb drive for a week....

XP dosn't support your mass storage controller by default.

You're right. I set in bios to use IDE mode and the setup program can show my hard drive now.

So I wonder if it's really necessary to use AHCI mode, which means i need to dig for another several hours or maybe days to get this thing work out, or just keeping the IDE mode is enough for daily home use?

It is not necessary, but you should be able to install the drivers and switch it later, example:

There are LOTS of "bla-bla's" about AHCI being great, but ultimately most opinions rely to the FALSE silllogism New=Always Better.

Very helpful. didn't expect i can install os first then install driver and change to AHCI. will try this later.

and i reckon there should be a solution to this issue from another side, which is to integrate the sata driver into the xp installation media, in my case is the xp w/ sp3 installation files on my usb drive. true?

Yes.

Usually the easiest is to integrate the DriversPacks, though for just one specific PC it is overkill.

well i have got a big problem
I used the utility to setup my 1gb san disk cruzer into a bootable pen drive
whenever i start my pc with the penddrive plugged in i reach the point where i enter the "first part"
after that the blue screen with the heading "Windows Setup" on the top left
now at the point when it says 'Setup is loading Windows" the process kind of stucks and ends with an BSOD error "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"
please help as it'll be a week without my pc working

First i'd like to say what an awesome little app this is!

I've had a quick look through the forums, but cannot seem to find a tutorial on using WinSetupFromUSB to make a flash drive with multiple XP versions on it!

Anyone got any tips or advice on doing this? I have had success making an AIODVD before, but the process does not seem to work on this!!

You don't need one.
It's "default" (up to ten versions) in the program.
Do read the docs.

What's actually the issue?

Please next time attach as a file such lengthy log, rather than copy-pasting it. Compress it if it exceeds allowed file size for attachments, or use free file share sites to upload it, such as www.datafilehost.com.

Hi All!
Is it possible to install WinXP from 16Gb USB-flash?
I had successfully installed this OS from 4Gb and 8Gb USB-flash, but can't do this from 16Gb

If I missed this skimming through this thread my apologies, but is it possible to reuse a usb stick prepared with WinSetupfromUsb without redoing the source and boot files after completing an installation?

The reason I ask is that when I install from a hard drive, the ~BT and ~LS dirs are only temporary and eventually get deleted by setup when it's done with them. I would assume that this will also happen to the USB stick if I install from that. Is there a way around this so that I can use it over again just like a CD?

I don't have any USBs that have write-protect switches, which might be a solution for some but not others like me.
