i use a little app called tray play, i wrote it myself, it plays movies of any format including dvd's(providing you have the correct codecs), it also has a preview window so you can watch another movie in a small window whilst watching a movie in the main window, it has custom playlists and because it only uses win32api uses hardly any resources, in fact the only thing wrong with it at the moment is if you try and resize it it goes a bit skewiff(am working on it at the mo, and i am having a few problems getting it to run from the systray)

if anyone wants to be a beta tester once i have ironed these problems out then let me know

winamp 5 rocks - such a lot of things in such a small package - and dare to show me another app that does all that wa5 does with such a small memory foot-print and HD space.

Of course, the pro features are another attraction.

have you noticed that winamp 5 no longer plays .asf files if you have the K-Lite codec pack installed ? (maybe the BSplayer of the pack interferes with wa5). Only WMP9 gets to play wmv and asf if you install the k-lite codec pack.

I gotta go with the new Winamp. Great plugin support. Plays all my monkey files and most everything else. Pretty good video in this version too. I use Real Alternative to play any real media I come across.

a little update on tray play, i think i will call it will not tray play...lol... got resizing done now playlists gone skewiff, and i am having trouble with file association. but still working on it. starting to look a little like media player now though, i think i need to redesign it a little.

I use Media player 8 that came with XP. I like it and have some very nice skins with it. I have the Plus programme on the beast as well and it added some useful things to Media player.

I havent used Winamp since version 2? Maybe I should consider the new one? :)

I've always used Winamp since its first version!! :D
Too nice and reliable, even if the last version (5.01) is a bit slow instead of its previous version (but full of new features)

Bye :)

I use WMP, I tried winamp, but it was too heavy and featureless IMO. Its a shame there aren't many decent skins for WMP

WMP 9 is great and will be integrated in SP2 :)

it lacks of good skins tough
probably harder to make a user-friendly skin for WMP than for winamp

Itunes for me. If I need a quick preview, I use Irfanview.

:blushing: Personally I use Media Monkey for my libraryof mp3z.
But..... VLC is really excellent as it reads everything from DVD to music playlists.
Okay its not very pretty but the good thing is works.
Oh, and if I just want to listen to a song that I've just downloaded I use Picaview.

@dev2761 - you really dug out an old one here.

Winamp for audio. WMP9 for video.

I tried using Foobar2000 for audio a while back... just didn't have the right feel to it. Winamp 5.08e with classic skins, Global Hotkeys, and the Media Library just can't be beat.

WMP10 is just big a fugly... too much fancy crap in there. WMP9 with the classic skin is good enough for me.
