Hi Floppy,

you wrote this earlier:

> I tried with iso only 450Mb---> The program finished ok.
> But I could not boot from pen, Message was "NO OPERATING SYSTEM"

Please test this ISO with MagicISO for bootebility.

The DVD might be OK, but you could not write it to the pen.
So that gives no information.
You succeeded to write the smaller ISO. But this one cannot boot from the pen.
So most probably the created ISO itself is not booteble.
That's why I asked to test this ISO for bootability.

My language is not English
If I burn the small ISO on a dvd I can boot from it. I did the "MagicISO" thing.(See pic)

Thank you for your effort! :thumbup

Hi Floppy,
I am not an expert, but found this:

" The CD-ROM file system (CDRFS) is a read-only local file system implementation under the logical file system (LFS) layer. The CDRFS is stored on CD-ROM media. The DVD-ROM file system (UDFS) is a read-only file system stored on DVD-ROM media."

Maybe that is the reason for your usb-stick boot problem.

With Nlite you can easily create a bootable CDROM ISO

Hi,

Thanks for the guide.
I wonder in I can put other files in the main disk on key folder while doing this?

Also I would like to know, which method works for sure, the first one or the second one (with ResHack edit)?

Hello,

I've juste tested the tutorial proposed and it worked fine for me with a Sandisk cruzer micro U3 with 2Gig ram.

I installed a full WinXP SP2 MSDN ISO file on my USB stick and I was able to boot on it (this iso does 700Mg).
I also tried with a generated ISO of True Image 11 with no problem at all (50Mg Iso).

Wanted to add 3 things/information to the discution :
----- Language -----
I also had the same problem as above, so keep in mind that :
1031 : For German
1033 : For english
1036 : For French
...... : So one

Language is writen at the start like this (this is entry 1031) :
STRINGTABLE
LANGUAGE LANG_GERMAN, SUBLANG_GERMAN
{
...
}
You must edit your language depending on OS language starting the exe program.

----- Parameter changed -----
If you check the difference between the prebuild Universal_Customizer and the one you can make your self with U3 Launchpad v1.4.0.2 Updater you can notice that the value for String Table
133 : 2121 is "__SIZE_OF_REPLACED_FILE_IN_ISO__" (not mentionned in tutorial)
132 : 2109 is "__LP_VERSION__" (with two "_" not one like in tutorial)

Adding or not those changes seems not to effect result so I just mention them in case.

----- Not working -----
Booting on U3 is a chalenge because "old" computers do not know how to do it. I tried my key on 4 computers.
5 years old : Not a chance, does not know how to detect USB at boot up
2~3 years old : depends, if your bios does not explicitly see your usb key as a CD-ROM drive, forget it it will never work. Typically if it sees only your USB as a HDD you get the "Not System / bootable Disk" error.
6 months old : it is just a bit frustation, because at boot, you must configure your bios in order to select the CD-ROM Usb key found by the bios. This means that the key must be pluged in before entering bios. In my case, my computer shows the key as two differents element : USB HDD and USB CDROM. You must select USB-CDROM for booting on ISO image.
What may be confusing is :
- sometimes it just says USB Micro Cruzer .... (no info about HDD or CDROM)
- sometimes you will see twice the same label (so peek one and if it does not work try the other one)
- if you remove your key, bios will not keep information, so next time you put your key back you will have to set back you bios option.

Best regards,
Renaud.

Hello,

Renaud: thanx for the additions.
I tested on a Vostro 200 and used the F12-key in pre-boot-time to select the USB-CDROM

I suppose Vista will work with Vlite. Vlite creates a CDROM-iso. But I have not tested it.

Zach_H:
You can easely add other files to the ISO with Nlite or MagicISO ea

After reading the warnings of Jaclaz I would prefer method 2: build your own installer.

I understood you question but do not know a program or method to show if the stick is bootable.

Isoinfo list boot information from U3 CD-ROM.

'cdrecord -scanbus' list device numbers.

Been trying all day to install xp from usb and this turned out to be the perfect way! Thanks for making this thread!!!

I used a Sandisk Cruzer Contour 4GB and a MSI Wind U100 laptop. As said by someone Universal Customizer doesn't in with vista, but worked perfect in xp. Also know that you will erase anything on your drive if theres anything there!

Thanks again, perfect solution if u have a u3 stick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not only u3 flash stick but also nearly every flash with a peroper mass production tool can image a usb cdrom.

a usb stick is made of tow main parts which is control chip and flash chip. the control chip controls the flash chip.

already sb use control chip software (we call mass production tool)divide a usb stick into 3 hard usb devices: usbcdrom, usb hdd/zip, usb floppy. thus 3 ways got to usb booting the system.

May I invite you :), since you appear to know English, here?:

So, has anyone found a way to get larger images (4GB+) to work like this yet? Or, does it not matter as long as it is a CDFS image?

Hi mmafterme,

the cdfs-format has a maximum of 4Gb. Lager does not work

Hi Renaud91

if you already have vista installed, making a bootable Vista install-disk is easy.

Found this:

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Here's some step-by-step instructions on how we do this,
1. Acquire an ultra-fast USB 2.0 flash drive

2. Format USB Drive

3 Run CMD.EXE and type the following.
Note: This set of commands assumes that the USB flash drive is addressed as "disk 1".
you should double check that by doing a list of the disks (type "list disk") before cleaning it.
If you have multiple hard drives, like an SDFlash drive or a Multibay drive,
you could end up wiping your second drive using this command.

1. diskpart
2. select disk 1
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

4 Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

Simply issue the following command to start copying all the content from the Windows Vista DVD to your newly formatted high speed flash drive.
* xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\

Boot up the machine, have it boot off the USB drive, and watch how fast the installation completes.

Jaclaz,
i completely agree on referencing and have references in earlier posts.

However the Vista-method can be found on hundreds of sites.
For example here:

http://www.realtime-vista.com/general/2007...e_to_boot_f.htm
http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/...dows-vista.html
http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft...hijfbeheer.html

So I do not know who is the original author, sorry
