Can the laptop correctly ping the server UNC?
Does the laptop user has administrative rights?
Does the laptop user enters the right username ad password when trying to join the domain?

Is the DNS zone integrated to Active Directory?
Do the server entries exist in the the DNS zone?
I think that the laptop looks in the DNS for the server entry, but doesn't find any, and fails.

Do you have subfolders in your DNS zone called _smds, _sites, _tcp and _udp (the underscore is important)?
I think that this could help you.
How did you install the DNS server? IMHO, the easiest and fullprof way is not to install it, and let dcpromo.exe do it for me. That way, all the necessary entries are created without mistakes.
This should help you as well. (This links leads directly to how registering a DC on DNS, but you may want to rean the whole page).
Keep me updated.

You do not mention if the server is a domain controller? In order to join the domain, a DC needs to be setup. For 2000 u need DNS setup and then run dcpromo on a member 2000 server to make it a domain controller.

Indeed... I took for granted that there is a DC... but, is there one?
