@MDGx: your link downloads version 10.02 (not 9.56).

And why not: Autoruns 9.57

As I said in post #30,
it seems to me that all versions after 9.12 are buggy with Windows 98,
and are not giving more information.

I asked about Autoruns v. 9.57 because I had not noticed a difference in the results of performance in comparison to Autoruns v. 9.56. However, when I looked at the displayed information more carefully, I found out that some part of it is false. The Autoruns v. 9.56 or 9.57 DOES NOT FIND PATHS TO THE CERTAIN PROGRAMS wrongly claiming that files of these programs "does not exist". I also compared the results of performance of Autoruns v. 9.12 and Autoruns v. 8.73, version 9.12 displays more results (correct ones)!

So I dug into my own archives and tested each deceased version's predecessor until I successfully found older versions that run. This list is subject to change in the event that I am missing a release! Until I hear otherwise, I believe these are the last versions running on Win9x ...

- - -

Du.exe .......... 1.0 ....... 53,248 ... 02-07-05 .... 4:43p ... ok (CMD Prompt)

As far as I can tell, DU version 1.2 (40960 bytes, 2005-10-15 2:56pm) works OK.

Aside :
Reading that only 11 utilities in the current suite are OK, it seems that the current suite is becoming more and more an irrelevance. Reading about partial loss of functionality, bloat, undesirable "phone home" features and restrictive license conditions in later versions of some utilities (that otherwise still work), leads me to think that ultimately, what will be most useful, will be a list of "best version for 9X" for these utilities. (IMHO)

Joe.

UPDATE TO POST #1

The top post has been re-written to describe the current ZIP package suite dated: 2011-02-01..

Win9x fans will notice that ONE MORE utility no longer operates. The file LISTDLLS.EXE v3.0 fails on Win9x, so users would need to use v2.25 instead.

Does anyone know of a 98 compatible freeware alternative to Sysinternals TDImon that has filtering ability? Filtering is disabled in the free version

They are not distributed in the Suite (nor do they appear on the All Utilitites page). The top post dates to the fall of 2008 when VS2008 was being used to recompile the utilities and they began to fail on Win9x.

If you can create a list of the missing utilities from the earlier days I will dig them up from my own archives and others, and write a little section about them. I had meant to do this eventually. Thanks for reminding me.

Thanks for doing the work of keeping track of this, it saves me (and I'm sure others) lots of time!

Look forward to you integrating more utilities into the list as mentioned above.

Over on the RegCompact for Win9x I have noted a possible bug in Process Explorer which I don't recall seeing before. Perhaps some others might try to reproduce it?

You will need to also have IrfanView and RegCompact present with the former, or, the former *and* the latter already running to experience the bug.

These were the result of my testing ...

; ProcExp version that never crashed ...
2005-08-22 - 13:29 ... 1,238,544 ... Procexp.exe v09.25

; ProcExp versions that crashed at launch when both IrfanView and RegCompact were already open ...
2006-02-09 - 13:53 ... 1,443,392 ... Procexp.exe v10.04
2006-02-22 - 15:31 ... 1,455,680 ... Procexp.exe v10.06
2006-05-10 - 16:28 ... 3,266,112 ... Procexp.exe v10.10
2006-05-11 - 10:38 ... 3,266,112 ... Procexp.exe v10.11
2006-07-12 - 12:59 ... 3,278,400 ... Procexp.exe v10.20
2006-11-01 - 14:07 ... 3,623,736 ... Procexp.exe v10.21

; ProcExp versions that crashed at launch when IrfanView was already open ...
2007-09-01 - 08:16 ... 3,585,408 ... Procexp.exe v11.00
2007-09-09 - 12:11 ... 3,589,160 ... Procexp.exe v11.01
2007-09-14 - 13:29 ... 3,589,160 ... Procexp.exe v11.02
2007-10-25 - 16:12 ... 3,609,640 ... Procexp.exe v11.03
2007-11-05 - 07:54 ... 3,564,584 ... Procexp.exe v11.04
2008-02-26 - 10:49 ... 3,654,696 ... Procexp.exe v11.10
2008-02-27 - 13:05 ... 3,654,696 ... Procexp.exe v11.11

So in other words, with just IrfanView running and then launching ProcExp v11.0 to 11.11 the bug occurs and ProcExp crashes.

For ProcExp versions 10.04 to 10.21 both IrfanView and RegCompact needed to be open to cause the crash. There may be more complex combinations that cause this crash as well.

Okay thanks! Interesting because that version I cannot locate anywhere. It nearly matches my 10.04, same size, but dated one day earlier.

So what is the skin you got there on Win9x? Looks like a cross between Royale Noir and Metallic Shades :thumbup

EDIT: typo
