God only knows why this isn't an option to be done automatically by Windows Setup when installing from the CD. As far as I know, this only happens automatically if you preinstall from a Configuration Set over a network using WinPE. So if you just want to do a CD install, you're SOL.

People make it sound a little too simple. They say just copy the folder, and update two registry keys so that the SourcePath reflects the new location. Nine times out of ten, the keys are:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup => SourcePath

-and-

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion => SourcePath

Are those the only two? Who knows? Why the heck are there two? Is one of them vestigial?

And what about the CDInstall key? Should that stay at 1? Nobody ever mentions that.

This has become quite unsettling, so I decided to create this thread with the hopes of people posting other registry keys to watch out for (that they know of), since it is apparently not an option to have Windows do this for us unless we are an OEM.
