Open the Security tab of the shared resource in Vista, assign file/folder permissions as needed. Also check for password protection (if any).

Why do You have two different default gateways....
Are you using a router?

On vista, under network and sharing center, is file sharing turned on? if so expand it and check the other options within.
Because you can share files without the public folders being on - and with us not knowing where you put your file....

pardon my ignorance but if you are using a cross over cable, do you need a gateway? i thought gateway was for routers.
if so, that may be your problem.
i have my two desktops connected with a network cable and i have assigned them a static IP without a gateway and do not have a problem.

On Vista PC check that "Password Protected sharing" is set to OFF.
