Windows 2000 Updates

The latest updates for HFSLIP can be found listed at the Windows 2000 Updates website.

This is an update of the page at FDV's site. The lists now contain and take into account WildBill's unofficial updates, and many additional hotfixes that are obtainable from Microsoft on request.

The latter hotfixes mostly update files from Service Pack 4 and the Update Rollup 1.

Unofficial updates are distinguished from the older updates that they supersede, making it clear for those who either prefer to use or omit those updates.

I've done a lot more work on the lists besides, re-ordering them to make more chronological sense, breaking out the Windows Script updates into their own list, and adding more descriptive information to updates.

I hope there are still folks around who are interested enough to give feedback! Thanks.

Edit: updated the URL for the Windows 2000 Post-SP4 Updates for HFSLIP page.

Table 2: Security updates and advisories (including Adobe Flash Player):

2008-07 | MS08-037: DNS | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Important | KB951748

| | | | | | The optional KB958752 fixes problems coming with KB951748 and KB956803.

| | | | | | The advisory KB957579 replaces KB951748, KB956803 and KB958752.

2009-06 | Security Advisory 971888: Update for DNS Devolution | | | | | | | | | Advisory | KB957579

| | | | | | The advisory KB957579 replaces KB951748 and KB956803.

Must be?

2009-06 | Security Advisory 971888: Update for DNS Devolution | | | | Advisory | KB957579

| | | | | | The advisory KB957579 replaces KB951748, KB956803 and KB958752.

Sorry, don't understood. What do you have in mind here?

2011-02 | MS11-012: Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Important | KB2479628

Must be removed?

2010-10 | MS10-073: Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Important | KB981957

Yes, forgotton to remove this line (PS: in the file-checker I removed this update correctly)

May be removed, replaced by Security Advisory 971888, this optional update?

Table 3: Non-security updates for Windows:

2008-11 | Fixes incompatibility with Zone Alarm (afd.sys) | | | | | | | | | | | | Optional | KB958752

| | | | | | The optional KB958752 fixes problems coming with KB951748 and KB956803.

| | | | | | The advisory KB957579 replaces KB951748, KB956803 and KB958752.

Thats what I've written in the remarks (Sec Adv 971888 = KBKB957579). In the file-checker you can deselect advisories and select optional-updates. For example: If you have deselected advisories and selected optional-updates, KB958752 will just be reported as missing if you don't have KBKB957579 in the HF-folder.

2009-08 Autoplay | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Optional | KB971029

Could be?

2009-08 Autoplay improvements| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Optional | KB971029

I think about a better description! :) (related to the KB-article)

Table 4: Non-security updates for Internet Explorer:

2010-12 | Empty dialog when opening "Organize Favorites" from Windows Explorer | Optional | KB972582

| | | | | | | As an alternative you can extract the shdocvw.dll from

| | | | | | | WindowsXP-KB2482017-x86-ENU.exe (SP3GDR), compress it

| | | | | | | with makecab.exe to shdocvw.dl_ and place it to REPLACE\I386.

To be updated?

2011-02 | Empty dialog when opening "Organize Favorites" from Windows Explorer | Optional | KB972582

| | | | | | | As an alternative you can extract the shdocvw.dll from

| | | | | | | WindowsXP-KB2482017-x86-ENU.exe (SP3GDR), compress it

| | | | | | | with makecab.exe to shdocvw.dl_ and place it to REPLACE\I386.

Sure, yes! Thx again!

Thanks for your hints. They are very welcome! :)

The first says

| | | | | | The advisory
KB957579
replaces KB951748, KB956803 and
KB958752
.

So, i think the second one should have the same (as in red color) because it is

| | | | | | The advisory
KB957579
and does not says that it replaces
KB958752

As you can read in the third quoted

and the same says at KB958752 but not under KB957579

2008-11 | Fixes incompatibility with Zone Alarm (afd.sys) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Optional |
KB958752

| | | | | | | | | The optional KB958752 fixes problems coming with KB951748 and KB956803.

| | | | | | | | |
The advisory KB957579 replaces KB951748, KB956803 and KB958752.

Or is HonorAutoRunSetting=1 the default-value for Windows when the HonorAutoRunSetting is not existing in the registry? In this case, AutoRun can be correctly disabled w/o

this setting. But... I don't think so but I could test it. :)

...

so, I've tested it. Result: Even with the latest shell32.dll you need the HonorAutorunSetting!!!

Without HonorAutorunSetting, AutoPlay is not deactivated completely!

Example:

- Deactivate Autorun for all drive-types (NoDriveTypeAutoRun=0xFF)

- Remove HonorAutorunSetting (or set it to 0)

- Insert a CD with Autoriun.inf

- Open Explorer

- Open context-menu of the CD-symbol (Right-Click on CD-Symbol)

- You see "Autoplay" ---> AutoPlay is not deactivated at all places!

All what is written in KB967715 needs still the HonorAutorunSetting=1.

For HFSLIP-Users: Use the WindowsXP-KB967715-x86-XXX.exe or a reg-file!

KB967715 is now an optional update to disable Autorun functionality completely and is not listed anymore on Windows Update.

KB971029 is the replacement for KB967715 and is listed as an optional update on Windows Update to prevent autorun on USB-media and removable harddisks as some viruses use these techniques to infect a system. This update keeps the ability to use the autorun functionality on CD and DVD drives, as most people are used to this behavior.

It seems that I should change the category of KB967715 from "High Priority" (Important) to "Optional".

oh...

sometimes, when compared the version of an installed file against the version number of the GDR-branch (what's written in the KB-article) they are always equal. But probably in these cases (when I checked the version) the files (QFE- and GDR-branches) had the same version-number...

I'm pretty sure that hfslip uses the QFE version of hotfixes.

I've looked into HFSLIP: HFSLIP uses QFE and - if QFE doesn't exist in an update - HFSLIP uses GDR.

(good to know after using HFSLIP for years!!! :D )

With this knowledge I've looked what's inside of KB2481109 and KB956744 and I can confirm that KB2481109 replaces KB956744 :)

KB956744:

SP3QFE ---- MSTSCAX.dll --- 6.0.6001.22443

SP3GDR --- MSTSCAX.dll --- 6.0.6001.18266

(nothing more for SP3)

KB2481109

SP3QFE ---- MSTSCAX.dll --- 6.0.6001.22840

SP3GDR --- MSTSCAX.dll --- 6.0.6001.18589

(and more for SP3)
