What is the best way to manage Ethernet ports for a small enterprise of, say, a few thousand ports?

Do you think NAC is worth the effort?

Are products like Cisco Campus Manager or HP OpenView worth the cost and deployment headaches?

How many of you roll your own scripts and SNMP solutions? How many ports can you effectively manage by rolling your own solution?

The company where I work uses CiscoWorks to manage its switches, that is, when it actually works and doesn't crap out. Otherwise we failover to regular command line which kind of sucks. :/
