I'm trying to reformat a friend's laptop. It's a gateway and it has a serial for media center, however he doesn't have the disk for media center. Could i use my XP home disc to install then upgrade later?

Yes, you can do that. But why can't your friend wait until he gets the MCE disk and then install it fresh? Either way it will work.
