Just been quoted between £250-£300 to retrieve my data!! The data is my family pics and worth a lot to me, but no way can I afford that sort of money! :realmad:

A VERY BIG thank you to Jaclaz for pointing me in the right direction and for Gradius2's easy to follow directions and parts listing. :thumbup

http://www.msfn.org/...ds-t128807.html

I now have a functioning drive, unbricked and updated firmware!! Spot on!!

All in all cost me about £25 for the parts:

  • I had a few probs with the set up. XP wouldn't recognise the serial port so I had no promt on Hyperterminal, just an arrow. So I downloaded Hyperdrive on Vista and it installed the serial port driver on COM3 straight away.
  • I kept getting an error when spinning up the drive but found it was due to pressing Ctrl+Z too soon after connecting the cables to the drive (give it about 20 secs)
  • Also found when doing the power off after F3 T> I tried a few times but found I had to not only take off the power but also unplug the USB and remove the battery, left it for a minute then powered on and entered:
    F3 T> m0,2,2,0,0,0,0,22 Job done!

An independant data company quoted between £250 -£350 and Seagate quoted £550-£1300 even though my drive is under warranty until 2013. I know it doesn't cover data but I thought it might count towards some sort of help.
My numbers match the drives affected for the BSY error but funny enough the man at Seagate says "no, that drive isn't affected" I said "well it is and it has the SD15 firmware" He point blank refused to help because apparently the SD15 firmware is the latest! Again I pointed out that the latest firmware for that model is SD1A and it says so on their website. His reply "no, your drive is fine it's not affected". To say I was mad is an understatement :realmad:

I have always used Seagate drives in my systems and PC's I have built for friends over the years. Under no circumstances will I EVER knowingly buy another Seagate product!

You guys are great! I'm a novice at some of this but I may try GRADIUS2's solution.

Here's my BARRACUDA 7200.11. Bought it in January 2009, Died October 2009. Looks like it was built July 14, 2008. Seagate says they won't touch it because is has HP firmware. I bought this on TigerDirect.com in an HP Pavillion.

Initial credits for the idea of this list go out to poolcarpet: http://www.msfn.org/...p...st&p=824992

To all seagate barracuda 7200.11 SD15 (and other version) owners, either broken down (by "no detect in bios", 0GB reported disc size & "the click of death") or still functioning fine:

Please register to the msfn forum and add your data to the list below so we can take a stand against seagate corporate practices. Moderators on the official seagate forum claim that our problems are not statistical significant, but judging from numerous complaints spread out over the internet we think they are! However, without a serious dataset (1000+ cases, from different countries) we don't stand a chance proving it statistically wise. So please help by adding your data.

Although the list is not helpful in restoring acces to the defective drive, we believe it is needed to:

1: Give an overview of the international spread of the problem
2: Document enough failures to disprove the claim of seagate moderators that this problem is statistically insignificant (And yes I consider this to be feasible, just look at how many people have viewed the main thread already! Their data (if relevant) is more than welcome)
3: Provide insight in the history and nature of the problem; when did the excessive failing start & do drives manufactured before a certain date last longer?

Personally I think that when the dataset includes enough drives over a large enough timespan (preferably including drives manufactured from september 2007 - present) patterns will emerge from the data, probably showing an increase in the rate of failures after a certain point in time. Ofcourse this is part speculation, but can you find (online) evidence of prior events where 7200.11 drives crap out at such a scale? If this point in time can be linked to a change in seagate production lines, like the arrival of new designs, new components, relocation to a new factory, etc. and combine this with the technical findings of fatlip, pichi, etc. we'll have a better chance understanding why this present massive failure event is happening.

Most of the data can be collected from the sticker on top of your harddrive (please keep in mind that you preferably do this when the computer is powered down, be safe). For purchase & fail date, use your memory or check receits/bills. If you are afraid that seagate will "blacklist" your drive, then only add the first 3 or 4 characters of the serial number. We will use a simple seagate date code calculator tool to translate the 5 digit code listed on your harddrive to the date it was manufactured. Thanks for your time and spread the word!

At the main thread sieve-x recently posted an official statement of seagate regarding the nature of this issue:

With motor connector & Heads connected I get busy error.
With either of them or both disconnected I get no communication at all.

Currently I'm stucked.

So this thing has a serial communication. If the engineers at seagate are no idiots (and I don't know any id*** that is able to make such a peace of high tec), there is a possibility to get into bootlader mode and flash directly over serial. Exactly for such cases where the terminal is not available anymore.
Anybody heared something about that?
Another idea how I can get the thing in service mode or prevent it from spinning up?

Help is appreciated.

AFAIK, you can view a full command list, by typing "/C" on the first prompt and then "Q" afterwards. No guarantee though that it works. I remember having used that once some months ago. Try it, if you can risk a failure.

This is my second seagate that failed this month, and I have two. So for whatever reason they decided to fail this month. I returned the first drive(7200.12 1.5TB) that fail thinking it was freak chance, but after this drive fail, I decided to do some investigation. By the looks of it, they should of issue a recall months ago, maybe years. If they did, I won't of so angry because of my lost data.

I already requested an RMA, should I have any confident at all that the replacement drive is any better?
