7200.11 500GB killed with segates firmware upgrade - downgrade?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

@all who killed theire 500GB ST3500320AS drives by updating to SD1A and who downgraded back to AD14 please lets try to find out why this downgrade sometimes works and sometimes not. If you dont care, please answer as much as possible questions:

-does the downgrade brought your data back?

-which firmware was on the drive as you purchased it

-which firmware was on the drive before you flashed it

-which serial number has the drive (if you want XX the last one/two digits)

-which date this drive was manufactured

-where the drive was manufactured

I lost all my data cause the update killed my main and backup hd and I lost all data.

I didn't tested the downgrade yet.

BR and thanks for help

Robert

PS:

@Mod: Maybe a sticky would be nice.

Nope, my drives had SD15 as i puchased them.

Here is what KLA1973 posted in my thread in the seagate board:

Downgrading to AD14 worked on one of my ST3500320AS drives made in Thailand. It came with SD15 and bricked with SD1A. Serial number for that one is 9QM06MB5. I don't have the drive out right now to get the manufacture date. It checks out fine in the bios and with Seatools after reverting to AD14.

The other did not benefit from AD14. It was made in China, also with SD15 standard, and I assume it is a bit newer build. Ther serial for that one is 5QM03FPC. AD14 flashes fine, but it still has the detection issue in my RAID bios and fails Seatools with "drive not responding to commands" errors.

This is very odd then.

Always when flashing you need to config your BIOS to IDE Enhanced/Extended (do NOT use RAID or AHCI on flashing process!).

Also, disconnect every drive, except the bad one and CD/DVD drive in order to booting from CD/DVD disc.

Boot from CD/DVD disc and try to flash (following the instructions).

Burn this firmware at 4x max and try it.

Trying fw AD14 will crash your drive, I know because I did with 750GB and I lost the access to my datas. Originally was SD15 and went for AD14, and bang! I managed to recovery thanks to fw SD1A (link above).

UNBRICKED my two harddiscs! All data is completely fine.

I had two working ST3500320AS that got bricked by the SD1A update. I was able to "unbrick" these two drives by downgrading to the public aviable AD14 update.

This downgrade doesnt work for all ST3500320AS but for some. If youre drive is similar to this data, you could try the downgrad if you need your data fast. If you have time, I suggest to wait / request the correct/perfect firmware from the seagate support.

Here are the data fomr the drives:

Purchase firmware: SD15

Pre-flash firmware: SD15

Serial: 9QM09XXX

Date: (only got date code) 08235

Produced in: Thailand

Site code: KRATSG

P/N: 9BX154-303

Purchase firmware: SD15

Pre-flash firmware: SD15

Serial: 9QM0BXXX

Date: (only got date code) 08235

Produced in: Thailand

Site code: KRATSG

P/N: 9BX154-303

The AD14 update is according the readme only for ST3500320AS's -301 and -302 but i risked it and it worked.

You'll need to check the flasher (.exe) program.

Stable release is FDL456b.exe, bad one is FDL456.exe.

Used FDL457.exe to force a downgrade.

sorry, but i have no idea how to do that. if i extract the .iso all i get is a drivedetect exe and a readme file. which flasher was the one in your link above? the firmware update i used is the one you linked to above.

was that the wrong one?

I did posted a fully how to about how to extract the .ISO, but that was done when the forum has some problems, and I guess that msg was lost (sigh).

To extract the ISO just open it with 7-Zip, then extract inside BOOT folder this file: Bootable_1.44M.img

Then you can open .img with your Power ISO, or Ultra ISO, etc, the file you want is .ZIP.

You can then boot from a bootable pendrive with just .exe and .lod on it.

An example for flashing:

fdl462b -m Moose -f SD1A3D4D.LOD -i ST3750330AS -s -x -b -v -a 20

That link (from my site) above is to force flashing to SD1A.

It will only works on Moose family. However they are different from SD1A posted by Seagate 1 or 2 days after they released another SD1A.

thanks for that mini guide!

unfortunately i have got a little bit confused.

i managed to extract the .iso fine using 7-zip and also the Bootable_1.44M.img. i cannot see any flasher .exes in the newly extracted files though. any thoughts? These are the only files i see:

Clicky (ignore the mac theme :P)

also sorry i just noticed you edited your post after i made this reply. you mention the link you posted is for the moose family? is there any way of finding out which one i need or do i have to try different ones?

Found the original post:

About firmware, I'll just post here.

They finally released a different (fixed?) firmware today for those drives:

STD Firmware Updates Barracuda 7200.11 SD1A 3 and 4 Disc Models

(750GB and 1000GB) Distribution tabs

ST3750330AS 9BX156

ST3750630AS 9BX146

ST31000340AS 9BX158

Generic Disty/STD-OEM, 16MB and 32MB, SATA Configurations, Moose

SHA1 comparing NEW with old firmware:

c:Seagate>sha1sum SD1A3D4D.LOD SD1AMOOS.LOD
b07e3a9ccf49185bc681f858c6ce568b45dd0ae5 SD1A3D4D.LOD (new)
268c6931e85936cfac3871c5baaee0c327186233 SD1AMOOS.LOD (old)

This is what flash.bat does:

fdl462b -m Moose -f SD1A3D4D.LOD -i ST3750330AS -s -x -b -v -a 20

fdl462b -m Moose -f SD1A3D4D.LOD -i ST3750630AS -s -x -b -v -a 20

fdl462b -m Moose -f SD1A3D4D.LOD -i ST31000340AS -s -x -b -v -a 20

I flashed all my 4x750GB, however 3 of them were with SD1AMOOS.LOD already installed, and I still don't know if it really re-flashed with new one.

How to boot Seagate firmware from a pendrive.

You'll just need a bootable pendrive (of course), with MS-DOS 6.22, or similar DOS.

How to extract Seagate ISO:

Open ISO with 7zip, extract the Bootable_1.44M.img file inside [bOOT] folder (inside the ISO).

Then open Bootable_1.44M.img file with Power ISO, or Magic ISO, or Ultra ISO, similar, and extract SD1A3D4D.ZIP file inside.

You only need to copy those files (unziped) to your bootable pendrive, and you're done to boot with pendrive.

At prompt just type flash (flash.bat) and it will do the rest.
